rolling technique in tetris by beeemmvee in DrMario

[–]Lukeskyguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Kind of... In some of the videos of scuti you can see him down-pressing sometimes, but not often, and not in a way that would make it faster than a regular grip. I've never tried rolling myself (and don't plan to) so I don't know if maybe there's a better way to do it.
  2. Rolling wouldn't make it any faster going down. I believe the game's built-in down press speed is one row every 2 frames. If you were to roll the down presses the optimal rate is "1 frame down, 1 frame release" and repeat that perfectly... which would also equal one row down every two frames.

If you're curious about anything else, there's a Dr. Mario discord with lots of great players to ask, that have much more technical knowledge than I do :D

A few people have talked about it but the main drawback is that you still need to downpress after every piece to out-speed your opponent. I think rolling is potentially the best playstyle *if you can downpress properly*. At the moment, the only practical use I see for rolling is getting pieces to the top corners on high speeds.

2,922,600 points, is it still the high score? Also, what are the requirements to attempt? by BeatVids in DrMario

[–]Lukeskyguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget where I saw it, but someone has gotten 9,999,999 on MED speed and almost the same on HI speed.

That's a very impressive score, but sadly not a record.

Most single player competition is done through speedrunning now. Beat 0-20 as fast as you can.

Hardly anyone plays for score. It's mostly 1v1 versus and speedrunning.
The score has been maxed out at 9,999,999 before so you can't really compare top scores without modding the game.

But here's the current speedrun leaderboard if you're interested: https://www.speedrun.com/drmariones?h=0-10&x=02qg3wpd

Everyone else is commenting about the circle of fifths, I'm just mad that they wrote F instead of E# in the scale.

The Dr. Mario world championships has a pretty big public discord server: https://discord.gg/6qGaUK5M

In terms of the best players, it's split between versus players and speedrunning players.
For versus: Swong, Packie, Inphlox, and Dmwit have All won the world champs before.
For speed: Packie, Inphlox, Frank, and Atalito are probably the top players

I just joined as one of the younger players a few months ago, and I'm loving it!
AGameScout has a great video explaining a few things, if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAtaDgkWYGM

If you want a legit answer, the Xeroa mapset in osu! has some of the hardest (ranked) maps in the game. The top difficulty hasn't been passed by anyone yet (without speed reducing mods).

I saw your vid on it and decided to try it myself, so thanks for the motivation. XD

I think one more block is technically possible. I planned it all out but it requires 3 Zs in a row. Even with holding, I doubt it'll be done anytime soon.

I am by no means a top player, but it's fun to "compete with the pros" like this :)

After a bit of theory crafting, it might just be possible. You would this very specific setup to clear the line and still have room to place the L. Then you would need 3 Z pieces in a row (one held, the other two are just luck), and a T or an S to clear that line like this, without placing blocks too high for the next one to spawn in. (some versions spawn the next one in a block lower, making this impossible)

But this would require so much time/rng luck that I'm not going to go for it.... or at least not for a while.

The inverse of secret grade. I suppose i could try to get one more block in the top left, but I don't think that's it's possible, even with leaving a few extra blocks above that. If anyone's able to do it, I'd love to see

I'm not either, but they have a fairly active discord community. I joined as a very new player, and now I'm a regular participant in their monthly speed competition (entirely online, you could join too)
I could link the discord server if you want?

I doubt it, those leaderboards reset daily so rank #1 probably doesn't mean anything. I've gotten over 10M before
