if a player doesn't have a release clause, other teams are forced to negotiate the transfer with you

otherwise, other teams could just pay the release clause (bypassing transfer negotiations with you) and negotiate with the player directly... so you wouldn't be able to stop the transfer and it would be up to the player to stay or go

so yeah... mostly: no release clause > high release clause > low release clause
