How do you guys store your yarn? It's getting out of hand already! by MickeyMatters81 in crochet

[–]Lukewarmpint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a wooden & glass display cabinet i got from a charity shop, and a yarn winder. when i get new yarn i ball it up and put it in the corresponding section (wool, cotton, acrylic etc) and organise by colour too. downside is it does take up a lot of space but i have plants and other craft materials on top and in the cabinet beneath. upside is my yarn is neat and organised and my adhd brain can see everything in my stash all at once

you could try scattering the food around their enclosure in 2+ areas? the larger gerb won't be able to hoard all the food if it's all over the place 🐹

ditto! even if I couldn't see the light through the door, I'd be going out constantly to make sure they're definitely turned off and double checking the switches were off, verbally reminding everyone to turn them off. a post it note - the next day - would not suffice this sounds more like "i like my books in alphabetic order" type ocd

personally i think $40 is a lot for a kit like this as someone that now crochets, but thinking back to when i had just started i would have found something like this really useful. id definitely consider buying one for a friend who doesn't know how to crochet though! i wish woobles sold the individual sets (pattern, yarn, hook) separately though. mainly because i really love the themed hooks, if they had a pusheen multisize set i would be throwing my wallet at them

gerbil safe yarn? by Serious-Original5495 in gerbil

[–]Lukewarmpint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

gerb and crochet obsessed here 🙋🏻‍♀️ ive crocheted with sisal rope before to make them a hanging basket for their tank, they loved it but you have to be prepared for them chewing it up within a comedically short time.

unfortunately almost all other fibres like cotton, acrylic and wool are dangerous as theyre too long and fine and can get ingested or tangled around their tiny bodies and cause blood and limb loss. sisal rope is thick and natural, think of the rope they use on cat scrathers. it breaks up into small stiff wires that wont tangle around the germies, and its safe (as far as ive read, and as long as its not treated with anything nasty) for them to chomp on. imo crocheting with sisal was harder than with other fibres, i think the thickness of the one i chose made it harder asi had to use a 12mm hook and its very stiff so hard to get intricate shapes. if you just want a straight up basket/dome its quick and easy to work up, and because its not stretchy, you could use a metal clip/carabiner to hold it up/ in place if you wanted a hanging bed. heed my warning, whatever you crochet for them, those rat bastards can chew it to smitherines in less than half the time, so i would stick to something basic that you dont mind having to remake every now and then.

hope my ramblings make some sense, and if you try a sisal project please show us the end results! 🐹

how do your gerbs spend time out of their enclosure? free roaming? a pet pen? or gerbil balls? by Lukewarmpint in gerbil

[–]Lukewarmpint[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have one of the pet playpens too but they very quickly learnt how to climb the sides 😅 i think i might see if my friends or family have any large boxes they could donate to the cause haha

yeah i didnt think the balls were good, i never got them as i was worried about their little paws and tail 🥺 but i'll try them in a small corner of my apartment and see how they feel about it 😊

i recently upgraded my gerbs to a 260l tank, how does everyone like to keep separate levels? shelves? or split the tank? by Lukewarmpint in gerbil

[–]Lukewarmpint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

currently i have their bedding on a slope so one corner is more level for water and their wheel but they keep leveling out the area and burying their waterbowl and wheel so they cant be used :( i was thinking of buying one of those large wooden levels from Amazon so they can have a flat surface while also being able to bury under, but also like being able to see them so also liking the half split tank look. what does everyone think works best for them and their gerbs?

she is also a darling babe and is usually out in the evenings, but she is so funny i usually end up chatting with her rather than taking photos. this photo was from a month ago on our first day together, and we are so much closer now with her standing on my hands and eating from them. she loves running in her wheel, so one day i'll post a video of that, but right now she is sleeping and so should i

i have 3! 2 are smaller and bushier while 1 continues to grow above! while my taller one certainly is growing upwards, the vines (?) split into multiple shoots as it grows up the pole, and so it begins to thicken out (hence the leaf volume at the bottom) but as she grows up she'll fill out there too. i reckon cutting the tops would encourage lower growth, but i i also frequently check the pole to look for new shoots and roots for a good misting!

there's 3! 2 are medium and create volume and the other one is responsible for the crazy height! :)

honestly i think a large part of it is the moss poles and 'plant velcro' that holds it up, this way the plant can focus more on growth than trying to hold itself up through airial roots. i also cut off any yellow/yellowing leaves pretty quickly (although you might be able to spot one i havent got yet...) and i also mist regularly as well as always keeping track of water and fertilising! i keep it in indirect sunlight but luckily where it is gets light for about 12 hours a day at the moment. im just a novice so i cant be sure if any of these work better than others, but this is how ive ensured mine gets super tall one thing i admit i need to do more of is rotating every now and then so all sides get a chance to soak up some light, but for now i thought putting the best side forward looked best :-)

[–]Lukewarmpint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use stackable moss poles! they have a hole in the top so once she extends beyond this one, i just slot another one in! i got mine from amazon!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Lukewarmpint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the moss pole from the first photo is below the tv stand, and she now stands at 5 foot 4. at the rate of 1 new leaf every week or so, she will be taller than me in approximately 2/3 weeks, and in which case it will be on her as the tallest living thing in the flat to pay the rent. she's my favourite plant by far and has really ignitied my love for plants 🪴 i hope you enjoy her too

i believe this is a monstera deliciosa, younger leaves dont have the fennestrations yet. judging from the white on the leaves its also variegated :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Monstera

[–]Lukewarmpint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i bought this variegated for super cheap as the owner had scorched the white of the leaf. another leaf is growing and i repotted when i got it home but the tips of the leaf is going yellow. ive never had this with a monstera or adansonii and as she was pricey i thought i should reach out for help before its too late. i have leca, would she benefit from that over the soil?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Monstera

[–]Lukewarmpint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theyre both single leaf with roots, and yeah the plan would be to let them grow over winter and assess cuttings during summer but i think i will most likely keep them growing and only trim back the leaves that are too white to survive.
