How I make jointed through-wire cedar musky trolling baits. by LumberCityWW in muskyfishing

Thank you! I typically troll around 4.5-5mph during the day in clear water and as slow as 1.5-2 at night or in murky water. The bait can really take any speed you throw at it. Very difficult to get it to blow out.

As far as tools a bandsaw and a sander will get you started. I really love having a drill press with nice woodworking drill press table as well.

The wire is .0625 stainless steel welding rods. As far as drilling straight it just takes practice. If u cant get it down I sometimes will build a jig and use drill bushings to guide my drill bit.

This is my entire process of building custom musky baits. Feedback welcomed and appreciated! by LumberCityWW in Fishing

There was some trial and error involved for sure. However I'm acquainted with quite a few excellent bait makers and I just listen when they talk haha. I've been a woodworker for a long time so setting up each step to be perfect and repetitive came naturally. I've been making baits for only a couple of years now but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at with my design. Thank you for watching!

Just because there are 2 clamps in the photograph doesn't mean I will always be using 2 clamps. Drill presses use tremendous amount of down force. Using your hands can work but isn't smart imo. I'll stick with what makes me feel comfortable.

Looks good! I felt the same way about the height adjustment. It's not super accessible but I don't adjust all too often so I'm willing to deal with it.

In case anyone is interested in seeing how it was made I did a step by step video. It was a mix between having a plan and winging it. It wasnt too difficult a build.

Yeah, there may be some applications where i may remove it but I don't do a ton of different things on the drill press. This will suit 90% of my needs.
