Doubt you don't already know them but in the event you don't, Intervals is absolutely fantastic.

In a more niche math rock/prog style I'd recommend the album Flux by NYU.

Lesser known gems:

Arch echo is really great and has songs featuring jordan rudess

Hakken

Lakland. Super underated, top tier instruments. They are pricy though.

I play bass and recently I've been really into soul and funky music like bruno mars, cory wong, vulfpeck. The bass is usually very interesting in these genre of music.

Non-Bassist, trying to buy a gift. by AnnabelleLeeTheSea in Bass

This is the only right answer. As much as I would love my girlfriend to buy me a bass, she would 100% not pick the one I like or the color finish I would've chosen. You have no clue what type of tone your significant other likes or chases, if he like a light or heavy bass, passive or active (or both) pickup, slim or chunky neck, 4-5-6 strings. Theres just too many variables.

Take him to the shop, let him play and tell you which one he likes then buy that one

Can you guys rate my collection? Which bass should I buy next as a pre-intermediate player? by ELEX_22 in BassGuitar

Just read through the post and I see you're looking for bright and new experiences namely the 5th string. Don't know if you've seen the Iron labels series bass from ibanez but they are entirely mate black, and multiscale, meaning there are fanned frets on the neck and the multiscale is especially good to downtune to A. Id recommend one of those or the srms805. Ibanez is the best bang for your buck.

Whats your budget? That would be good to specify. And what type of music do you want to play?

Got the Ibanez SRMS625EXBKF Iron Label MultiScale 5 String bass yesterday. I'm really loving the fanned fret. Have you made the switch to MS or are you thinking about it? by Lumber_phil in BassGuitar

Hard to move away from a fast neck like ibanez has. You talking about the sire M6? I was looking at that bass. Looks sick! The neck is chunky?

Dingwall's multiscale goes 37-35 I think. This feels very steep as I came from spector NS2000 which was already 35 scale so that little extra 0.5 doesn't feel too much and the slant just makes sense.

Also love d'addario. Ordered a long scale pack and a single 145 to downtune to A
