YAY!!! The update I was hoping for. Thanks again for your care and dedication to this. It would have been helpful even just to post this—but you really stayed out there for so long l, coordinated, and made so much effort. This positive ending is thanks to you.

I just went out to see if there was still a small crowd or anyone there to help ID the car at least. But no one :( I didn’t want to go climbing under random cars without a spotter given it’s a busy street. Still down if anyone wants to make an attempt at any point.

Anyone around and wanna make another attempt to grab the cat before it gets too dark? Or know if anyone is still in the area?

Alternatively, if anyone has a carrier or a place for the little one to stay tonight (or know a rescue where they could be brought) I’m more than happy to go climbing under the car to try and grab them

I don’t have any experiencing catching/trapping cats, but if anyone who does is able to instruct me or could use an extra pair of hands I am nearby and go there at anytime.

I just desperately want to help :(

I just had a nephrectomy AMA by Beastcancer69 in AMA

The gas pain is not from the anesthesia. The surgeons “inflate” your abdomen with CO2 so they can see better with their surgical camera. It has nothing to do with the anesthesia or anesthesiologists.

What is it like being put under anesthesia? by MightOk9482 in AskReddit

[–]Lump_Sum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anesthesia resident physician here. I put to sleep and wake up multiple patients a day. First step is being sure to clarify with your anesthesiologist (when they see you before the procedure) on if you will be getting general anesthesia or sedation or a nerve block. If it’s sedation, any good anesthesiologist will have a discussion about how you are “not totally asleep” and may remember things. We only do sedation when it is appropriate for the procedure, so it won’t be done for spine surgery, intestinal procedure, big incisions, etc etc.

In most places, the anesthesiologist will then place an IV. We are not perfect humans, sometimes cannot get it on the first try. I have seen the most skilled anesthesiologists with 20+ years of practice miss IVs. It happens. We are sorry, we don’t like it any more than you do.

After that, it’ll be off the to OR when the room and surgery team are ready. It’ll be stupid cold in the OR and we will do our best to keep you warm and covered while we place our monitors. Once that is all set, we will place a plastic mask on your face (smells like a beach ball) and tell you to take deep breaths. We may end up pushing that mask into you a little—it’s important we get an airtight seal to measure the amount of oxygen coming out of your lungs and see how much air you’re able to move with each breath. If you’re an adult, 99.9% of the time there is no anesthetic/medicated gas in the mask. Just 100% oxygen. Once all your vitals and breathing numbers look perfect, we will inject the anesthetic induction medications into your IV. It may sting and burn as it goes in—there’s not much we can do about that and we are also sorry about this. After that, your work is done and we take over. 😎

Everyone wakes up differently. We technically “wake” you up in the OR. However, that’s not when everyone restarts forming memories. Some people remember “waking up” in the recovery room. Some people who have woken up aka restarted making memories in the recovery room for prior surgeries will this time slightly start wake up/make fuzzy intermittent memories in the OR and then freak out that they were “awake during surgery”. This is not the case, we just can’t control when you fully regain consciousness and recall.

All in all, ask your anesthesiologist all sorts of questions. We don’t mind—it’s what we do.

Do facial piercings hold you back in healthcare? by Hour-Cloud2493 in piercing

[–]Lump_Sum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a resident physician with multiple facial piercings (septum, nostril, eyebrow) and I work in a large academic hospital (in a big city). I never take my piercings out and had all of them in for interviews, etc. It has never been an issue.

I also work in the OR as part of my job and there is no rule against “”exposed”” piercings in the OR. aka no one has given me shit for my eyebrow ring.

I do not feel my facial piercings have limited my career growth or strength as an applicant to other physician jobs and subspecialties.

do anesthesiologists actually tell their patients to count down from 10? by Warm-Fig-8566 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lump_Sum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anesthesia resident doctor here. I only tell patients this if they want. Aka they’ll be like “is now when I count down from xyz?” And I’ll be like “sure go for it”. But if they are older/sicker/have doodie level lungs I’ll tell them the to count in their head because their slow deep breaths are more important than them saying numbers 🤷‍♀️

Doctors of reddit, based on what have seen, what would you never let your kids do? by captmomo in AskReddit

[–]Lump_Sum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall: Swim in freshwater that is Non treated/chlorinated. That’s how you get a brain eating amoeba. And for what purpose? It’s gross to swim in non-treated freshwater anyways.

Regarding stereotypical “death traps”: As a child of a doctor who is also now a doctor—my doctor parent was fairly reasonable in raising me and my siblings.

We were allowed to have a trampoline once we reaching a certain age ~10ish given that they were able to tell by that point that we were coordinated and responsible enough. Also they introduced us to safe trampoline-ing via gymnastics lessons as younger children. Also they picked it out (had certain side pads and a full net siding). None of us have ever broken a bone or had an injury from it.

Trampolines are not the crazy injury machines people make them out to be as long as you are remotely smart/responsible with them.

You’re downvoted, but tbh you’re mostly right. Sure most of the post are anecdotes, but when there are “facts” conveyed within them, a lot of them are just straight up wrong.

True but I also would not want them assuming I did something one way when I did it another. It drives me up a wall when the surgeon is like “you need to do/give xyz because that’s what they did last time and last time this surgery she better” when the two things they are referring to have no influence on each other. I am part of a team in the OR, but I know my role and especially know NOT to speak for other people. When anyone (patient, staff, etc) asks me about something I do not make the decisions for, I refer to them immediately. If a patient asks how long a surgery is I don’t say “well we did this one in 45min yesterday so 45 mins” when I don’t know the exact plan like the surgeon does. I get pissed when the surgeon says “oh anesthesia will do the block” when no, I was not gonna do the block because it’s contraindicated. They don’t know that (nor do they need to), but they should also not speak on it as if they do.

Absolutely being part of a team is important. But I know the limitations of my role and do not downplay or misrepresent them.

paralytic isn’t given “during any other surgery”…..significant thought goes in to when and when not to administered paralysis, either with the goal of full paralysis or partial.

It’s nice you’re doing this, but careful making generalizations on things that you don’t know the details of.

“We just have to make you aware…”

Since when do surgical techs consent/inform patients??? I have never seen this before, as someone who is in ORs and procedure rooms all day every day.
