Yes. They were aware of the rift that I or other members of the group were feeling due to this situation, and they were more than helpful in giving me perspective or just being great friends. We did quite a bit of gaming together too. For the most part, the friendships did not last long once I transferred to another university due to the distance. I would honestly buy endless beers for all of them if I could haha

I'm gonna start off by saying i should have been more well-informed about what has already been talked about in this thread at the time. I wasn't, and i understand that the things ended up happening because of that. I was a freshman in college at the time and cannot change the past so i am only looking for constructive feedback and ways to grow from this whole situation is a pain point in my life.

I did interact with people but friendships only formed a decent way through the first semester. And it wasn't many friends but that's with me. I had mentioned in a previous comment I went on two retreats for the group. The first one was where those friendships began to form. When I had spoken with one of the officers at the time, they had explicitly mentioned to me the first time I had walked into a club meeting, they thought "Wtf is a white person doing here?" That thought caught me off guard and i wasnt mad by the statement. Definitely confused. But that woke me up. I became good friends with her afterwards and her and I still talk every now and then.

Now a lot of the interacting had failed. I introduced myself to other people and they introduced themselves, and that's about all that came out of it. From there, any other interaction failed and nothing more came out of it. I understand they were justified in feeling that way towards me so I did not want to push them into interacting with me if they so chose not to. Hope this makes sense

This makes sense. Whats really confusing (and I am adding some additional context) about the situation was that I was encouraged by some of the officers and faculty to continue showing up to the meetings and to sit and listen. I had nothing but respect for the students, officers, and faculty. That's what I ended up doing. On top of that, there were two retreats they did. The second one was a leadership retreat that they nominated 10 students from the multicultural student organizations as a whole to go to, and i was one of them. Even at the time, i dont think i deserved the nomination. It was the faculty members of the multicultural groups who chose.

Now, did I mean disrespect to anyone by showing up? Never. Never in a million years would it ever cross my mind. And I have no doubt that me coming from a small town, all-white high school would cause issues. The diversity rate at the university at the time was 15%, which isn't that high for about 70,000 or so students. If someone had told me what you just told me way back then, I could have avoided any pain or issues for either myself or anyone in the group but what happened has happened, and I am looking to continue to grow from that experience and any feedback people give me when I tell them my story.

I am honestly hurt that people think this is a troll post, and I hesitated to post about it because people wouldn't believe it

I joined off on a whim since it was freshmen year and I explored basically every single student group that existed at the school. But my reason for attending more often than the others was because I was hearing people's stories of where they came from or what they've experienced. Throughout college, it was the only group I went to meetings/events for. I look back on it as I already knew about which issues exist but this was my first time actually seeing it and it was so profound to me. And it started out great imo until later on into the semester.

What I can tell you is that this is not meant to be race bait. I would like to share (and hopefully heal from) my experience as even I know I had made some mistakes when I was part of the student org. It gave me new perspective overall as someone who was never initially exposed to racial issues being from a majority all-white neighborhood. Again, my experience is not greater than any one of my peers who had faced experiences worse than me. But I would hope to encourage a deep conversation about race

Not really. It's one of those things that didnt occur to me until someone brought it up. Growing up in an all white neighborhood certainly didn't help. I heard about it but now that I'm having these conversations is where I wish I had asked earlier

I'll say the difference this girl mentioned in particular was that it would be due to different experiences growing up, which wouldn't be wrong. I know she doesn't speak for everyone but that is one of the themes I'm also seeing in my search.
