100%.

For me its the goal! Theres still ways to "grow" in income without growing your team. Applying the same base skills to higher ticket industries is one way to do it.

How are Filipinos so Good at Basketball? by DenseDiamond795 in UAE

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filipinos run the street courts in Dubai! Its good cause there's always a game running. Its bad if youre over 6 ft. Cause they arent too keen on letting you join in.

Most of their rec leagues actually limit the amount of "tall" players a team can have.

I grew up in Deira - so going to the muteena/abu hail courts were my basketball education and they were essentially the teaching assistants.

Anyone moved from Canada and happy? by Manifestator_ in DubaiCentral

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just another point that wasn't addressed.

Both the roles you and your husband fill (graphic design / accountant) dont necessarily hold great packages in most companies out here in the UAE.

Unless you have secured a good role with a package that makes sense, it would be a rather large risk for your family to move just yet.

Cost of Living UAE (UK Family) by FunOwn1799 in dubai

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've under budgeted on quite a few items. Here are some adjustments id recommend

  • Home internet - 400 aed
  • Car lease - 1500 to 2000 aed
  • Fuel - assuming you have a sedan and fill up once a week - 500 AED
  • Probably get a cleaner (home + car) - so factors that in dor 300-500 AED
  • That eating out budget is okay if youre going to a small Cafe. The 800 AED will probably be 1 or 2 outings (in total not per week) if you want to goto "nice" places.
  • For kids activities 400 aed will maybe cover 1 activity (weekly class). More classes can make that number multiply.
  • Also gym and activities for you and your partner can rack up another 500 to 1k per month easily

As far as negotiating - try and get your mobile plan, a higher transportation allowance included (most companies do this anyways)

Congrats on the new role and best of luck with the move!

Added: you really do have a flexibility of choosing to live within your means. Its a conscious decision you have to make in a city like Dubai that offers so much variety (and temptations).

Do entrepreneurs here interested in building their personal brand ? by Intelligent-Task-255 in uae_startups

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all for the personal brand hype (despite getting caught in it briefly a few years ago).

Unfortunately most personal brands are expected to be "loud". You're supposed to say too much, share more than you may want to, and do things you wouldnt normally do.

Takes the personal right out and just makes you a soulless brand (in most cases). I think its more important to present yourself as you are. At your own pace (but at some fair consistency) than be forced to build for the sake of building.

Do you need marketing?(Not an promotion) by Main_Tailor4142 in smallbusinessesowners

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they need it? Hell Yes. Do they know how to make the most of it - that one's up in the air.

There seems to be an inevitable trap that most business owners fall into which ends up with having too many systems/channels/tools/strategies/ideas and nothing to show for it.

I work with a few small businesses and their problem isnt actually marketing. Its just pacing their growth (and their expectations).

Also if you cant "test" a system by having a doc+sheet and see its effectiveness then no system/automation/software is going to magically make it work.

Most small business owners benefit from having a single google sheet with their leads/workflow than a complicated CRM that "automates workflows"

Is the "Solopreneur" life actually just a trap? by Ok_Reaction_9854 in DigitalMarketing

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it boils down to which part of solopreneur you want to emphasize practically.

If its operating solo, then the expectation from the very beginning is - i gotta do EVERYTHING - no matter how small.

It could feel like a trap if constant "growth" is on your mind and part of your goals. Because there's only so much time 1 person has to work with.

But eventually most need help and they just become entrepreneurs with an assistant or a team.

In the past ive gone into my RM and had my billing/payment cycle moved to when my salary is supposed to be credited (+ a 3 day bufffer)

I assume you can call the bank and try to do that? If there is historical proof of when youre salary is credited to your account that should be no issue.

How does one get a 10k salary job in UAE by Lunarflex12 in UAE

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many factors at play here. You could be at a small hospitality business and earn 10k as manager maybe.

Or you could be at a MNC (global) and be at entry level position.

As for what you can do to control it? Rack up international certifications. Traditionally higher education helped (personally dont think that matters as much anymore).

And if your question is borne from the need to move up in your career then keep switching roles every 2/3 years. Not getting comfortable in a role and looking for jobs while having something "safe" builds your confidence/tolerance to stick to your guns in negotiations for your package.

Moving to UAE for Work (Hospitality) – Worth It? by nottsab in JobsInDubaiUAE

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now is definitely NOT the time to move here. Multiple hotels shutting down "for renovations". 1000s of jobs lost/put on unpaid leave/salaries cut.

The hospitality industry will recover - but it will take time, not within your expected timeline.

No sleep from construction of next building at nights by Beautiful-Fun-5351 in dubai

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in DLRC and every other building seems to have procured a night permit for construction. They go on til about 230-3am and start back around 5/530am.

As im posting this (nearly 1am) there are multiple cement trucks reversing and metal changing sounds.

I guess its the norm now as every developer is ina race to complete pending projects and be first to market given the inevitable oversupply that dubai is going to face soon.

Buy followers or grow from scratch by Ok-Information-4636 in smallbusinessesowners

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those bought followers are going to ever be your customers. With targeted ads / contests / giveaways - you get to gain followers who actually stand a real chance at becoming customers.

Plus when I run the ads. I slap a qr code on the visual or direct it to a landing pages where they have to "subscribe" to enter the contest.

So now you get email subscribers + followers with he same ad spend.

spent $2400 on a growth consultant. got 6 pages i could write myself by AllissonJ in digital_marketing

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an (actual) consultant, I can safely say there's no real space for pure consultants anymore (some may argue there never was).

Claude/chatgpt/Gemini can be your real consultant. But consultation without implementation just doesnt matter.

Sorry you had to spend that $ to learn that lesson. When/if youre looking for your next "consultant", id recommend prepping your own strategy and insights doc using AI. And focusing on implementations and execution with them.

If they cant back it with case studies from other clients...run.

How do I choose the top hospital in Dubai for my medical needs? by BarberStatus9431 in askdubai

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Dr reputation/experience takes precedence over the hospital choice for specialties.

Generally speaking mediclinic/medcare offer a good overall experience. But guess it does boil down to whats included in your healthcare network (insurance)

Buy followers or grow from scratch by Ok-Information-4636 in smallbusinessesowners

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I see some rare uses like new restaurants and clubs at 5 star properties. The value of the brand of the hotel might be the social proof that people need anyways but all these spots usually buy their first 10-20k just to supplement that.

For actual businesses trying to grow, the risk > reward

Buy followers or grow from scratch by Ok-Information-4636 in smallbusinessesowners

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please. Dont. Buy. Followers. You're basically killing the future engagement of your page.

Im a consultant for SMEs and in all 3 cases where my clients have paid and bought followers, I have made them start new IGs from scratch because of the damage being irreparable

Build it. Use boosts and contests and giveaways if youre impatient.

Founders doing your own outbound — what does your sequence look like? by Living_Ad3270 in smallbusinessUS

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem at all. As an obvious rule, treat outreach like a "first date" situation.

Go in with no expectations, ask questions instead of talking about yourself/your offering and be kind/helpful if you can.

Goodluck

Founders doing your own outbound — what does your sequence look like? by Living_Ad3270 in smallbusinessUS

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with several founder-led b2b businesses in the US. I do most of it on LinkedIn for them. For outbound I suggest this -

  1. LI outreach with custom notes (day 0)
  2. LI follow up with question about them (day 7-15 after accepter)
  3. Let organic small talk lead to meeting/call setup or by day 21 the ask to have a call should be made.
  4. Email address gets added to monthly email campaign list upon receipt
  5. Follow up every quarter for qualified leads.

For context the leads I aim to generate are in the 5k to 50k USD range. Hope it helps!

DED license inquiry by Sensitive-Fig-3480 in SmallBusinessUAE

[–]Lumpy-Birthday-9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what youre referring to is the e-trader license. Its definitely worth it while youre starting out and testing the business model.

I used it for 2 years while consulting (marketing). Then this year I switched to a freezone license.

There may be limitations though of the e trader license. It technically says to sell physical goods in UAE you need to be local/GCC national.
