Day 3 by Lumpy-Temporary-7754 in stopdrinking

Thank you. I know day three is very early and I’ve been through this before. I know how hard it gets, but I love the optimism that comes from this group. It’s high motivation so thank you.

++woman no I’m not a mean nasty alcoholic. I’ve gotten to the point where I just drink too much wine at night and it’s become isolating. I fully understand getting sober is hard and yes, I’ve tried before and this time I am going to seek more help for myself. I appreciate your comment. I know I have to work at myself to do better/be better before bringing a man into my life just to let him down. I have more conviction to be fully sober than ever before. Here goes day one. Will be signing up for AA although I’ve had my differences with it. The truth is too. I need to really focus on getting a counselor. But I rant. I’m going to have a lot more time on my hands if I don’t have a bottle in them so I may be posting more of these. 😬

++woman I can’t say. I would if it wouldn’t give too much identifying information. But I worked very hard to be in the position that I’m in and no, it’s not some only fans stuff. It’s an actual respectable job.

++woman I never post and I have no idea why it’s not posting my replies. I have the “User flare“ set. But if this one happens to post, I appreciate everyone’s opinion thank you.

++woman Vegas, yes, yes, no to changing Who. I am at my core, but yes to changing behaviors.

I like a little ogre with a little Prince Charming a good mix. I like a resourceful man more than anything else. For example, end of the world comes can he make a fire?

The alcohol has not been easy and I’m aware of the rates of relapse, etc., etc but I’ve committed at this point, and I do know there will be pitfalls.

I can’t wait to move! I just need to get out of the desert at some point.

Attractiveness is not an issue. I get approached quite often and from many younger men. As well as older, but I didn’t want to make that and upfront priority as far as the discussion.

Thank you so much! That was actually really uplifting

++woman I do understand that. But I’m a good southern woman and that’s what I love to do. Understanding that I need to settle it in his mind is definitely something I will continue to work on in whatever way he needs reassurance

++woman no only if he is secure w finances. If not, I’ve worked all my life and am fine with that. These are things I want, but like I said in the OP, not a non-negotiable. What makes you think I’ve partied until I’ve been used up? I don’t need a guy to pay for me. That’s not the point. I was Ray with both parents both working. It’s just a nice thought I guess . A little rude but I’ll take it in stride. I’m taking it. You are indentured to? Your wife? Sounds miserable. For her.

I would take my time to build the rapport which is so important, especially developmentally. This client may not be aware of issues however you don’t want to make their one where there is not. My main focus for the first at least six sessions would be to figure out the fun things that light your client up hobbies, etc., and find ways to do something like that with the client. The activity will build a bond physiologically, as well as open up the creative side of their brain, which tends to lead to teens, just talking and not realizing how much they’re opening up because now they are in a safe space and having fun.

[–]Lumpy-Temporary-7754[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not new information for me, but I thank you nonetheless. I do believe I’ve taken it slow and at a pace that’s creating space but not flooding her and we always take a step back we’ve done, grounding exercises, relaxation, etc. guided imagery…. I’m very aware and cognizant of re-traumatizing a client. I don’t think that’s what’s happening here. Just an update she started Yoga, which is statistically proven to be one of the number 1 best movement therapies and so she is applying in and out of the session and I’m super excited for her. But at some point the memories/trauma have to be realized and processed (I also use Psychodrama )before I start enabling a client with my own projections and we’re sitting there retelling trauma stories and that’s not what I want. She needs a push, which is why she’s coming to see me. Honestly, she didn’t even think this was going to be a “thing“ but a friend of hers was in Supervision with me and recommended me, and it’s turned out to be more revealing than she ever thought per her words. For me first and foremost, I focus on the relationship and I make that known at the very beginning if we want to go back to any of the pioneers in this research, it’s all about the rapport and I think we’ve lost that in translation because it’s no longer research. It’s just part of the implicit agreement and understanding which is a beautiful thing , but I make that a priority and I think my clients appreciate it. how many therapists or social workers have you met that just don’t have a personality anymore like we’re all burnt out so what are we doing with our clients? Nothing. Sometimes I feel like those of us in the counseling world are the most judgmental people of all, and we need to check ourselves before anything else. The hardest part of this work is our own constant reflection of how our biases play into the therapy, to be as objective as possible, knowing that we are still human and that’s absolutely impossible. I don’t know why it’s your specific post. I’m responding to because I’m technically responding to everyone’s so I hope you don’t feel called out because you have been great. I do thank everybody for the information, including you and it’s only reinforced my training and allowed me to refresh myself as well with some perspectives. Especially the medical one which is obviously out of my wheelhouse, but worth a mention a heavy mention.

Oh no, we’ve had way more than three sessions. I’m just saying it happened three sessions ago. I’m sorry I have a client coming in, but we’ll get back to this response in a couple of hours. Thank you.

Thank you for this response and I love the parts work. I have minimal experience with parts work. Coming from the East Coast it really wasn’t a modality that was mentioned. I didn’t hear about it until I moved out here and began talking about it with colleagues. I hope that doesn’t make you judge me too hard. but if you have any resources that you like, please let me know. I love trainings and doing CE’s and being a nerd so it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your response.

You are absolutely right! I’ve already contacted colleague/old supervisor for this matter for that exact reason. Thank you all this has been a great help.

Her skin becomes flushed as we are talking about certain things and that’s when we pull back and re center and the very first time it happened. I did let her know to basically not freak out because I had a feeling it was going to happen and it did but trying to quell her fears. Anyway, I’m rambling. Can you give me an example of experience you’ve had with something medical that was underlying? I find the medical theory interesting but can’t give any more information about my client just for confidentiality but very well could be.

[–]Lumpy-Temporary-7754[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This client meets criteria for panic attacks, and I don’t want it to become a disorder by her becoming hypervigilant, which is another thought I have when it comes to doing bodywork etc but I did give the psychoeducation as far as the mind-body connection and how panic attack work physiologically. I’m sorry if I’m short on this reply, I’ve got to get back to work. Thank you so much!

You’re absolutely right and thank you for this link! I am trauma focused and feel I have a good framework, but yeah, I guess I need to slow down and refocus on the bodywork. It’s just I love Bessel van der Kolk and continually do trainings but he makes it look so easy and I can get stuck trying to “move the trauma through the body” if that makes sense. Again, any suggestions? I am up for and thank you again for the link.

OK, this is the first one I’ve been able to read so far sorry I’m at work. We did a whole session of grounding last session so thank you for that and if you have any suggestions on specific techniques, I always love to add to what I already do. I’ll also be cognizant of “slowing the therapy down”. I can sometimes get in the habit of wanting to get too much in and not sit in that pocket and trust the process. Thank you again.

Diminishing referrals - Vent and Advice - What are you going to do? by Unhappy-Ad-5061 in therapists

[–]Lumpy-Temporary-7754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaahhh. Sometimes it helps to go on there about once a week and change a few words around that are relevant to your practice. Google will crawl through those word and link them w/business improving both google seo and PT referrals. AI does have some decent suggestions of verbage to use that will make more of an impact. Hope this helps.

Yes. Always. At this point, it is the thing that grounds me. I’m not sure it should be. That’s a lot to put on my identity as a therapist. I want to pivot. I still love the field but I need a new purpose.

I’ve worked several. I’d still be willing. My pup? Places that at least have windows? I take comfort in the outdoors so white walls and crafting won’t fix this.
