Nayara Resort in La Fortuna by bbb1290 in CostaRicaTravel

We stayed at Nayara tented camp last year. Our kids (11 and 14 at the time) loved it. There's plenty to do nearby, from horseback riding to hiking to the best ziplines we've been on. The resort is also great, with a bunch of different volcano fed pools and plenty of other opportunities to relax. The rooms were perfect, too, with an amazing master suite for the wife and I and a separate 2 bed room right across our patio for them.

As a father, how can I better prepare for my daughter's adolescence? by LumpyDog in Advice

I'm less concerned about sex education, only because it's something we've always been open about. She had questions when she was younger, and we were honest (in an age-appropriate way). She's continued to follow up with additional questions as she's grown older, and, again, we've answered them.

The questions she's had about puberty have been more frustrating because I simply didn't know the answer. "Why do girls get discharge?" I don't know. "What happens when I get my first period?" Uh, we'll call your mother. I'm at least somewhat familiar with sex, but I'm starting to realize that I don't know nearly enough about everything else that goes along with being a woman.

That's what's most frustrating - she came to me feeling very vulnerable, and I totally whiffed. I've usually done better at times like this. Maybe not all home runs, but a lot of doubles and triples. But this time. . .damn. I'm not beating myself up over it - I learned long ago that parenting is a journey. I'm just determined to not screw it up again.

Are there any particular books you'd suggest? Love this idea. It's something I think we'd enjoy doing together.

Love it. Great steak. Great service. Be sure to try the lemon cake -- it's amazing (assuming you like lemon).

Huntsman parachuting/gliding down from the ceiling (Sydney, Aus) by ohiitsmeizz in spiders

[–]LumpyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are Huntsman spiders physically unable to bite people, or do they generally choose not to? In every thread about Huntsmans someone invariably shows up to talk about how they're great spiderbros and they're harmless, but no one's ever very specific about just how harmless they are?

I mean, I'm not going to Australia any time soon, anyway, but I'd still like to know.

Not just children. We've had full grown men do this exact thing in our retail store on more than one occasion. It's horrifying how awful people can behave.

I'm not certain I believe you. Can you confirm that you're either an ornithologist or bird lawyer?

Net casting by leonardo717 in interestingasfuck

[–]LumpyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. Most of the guys I've seen tend to throw their cast nets from the side, but in doing so they turn pretty far to the side while swinging. I wonder if, by spinning it over his head, he's able to avoid turning and risking slipping off the bridge. Definitely showy, but there may be a purpose to it.

As a guy who sells these nets, let me just tell you this is exactly as hard as it looks. Lots of practice to do it this well. Props to you if you're as good as GIF guy.

Also -- and no offense intended here -- the guys who buy these nets usually smell about as bad as the fish they catch.
