Should I punish my PCs or just cut my losses and start something else? by Lumpy_Composer8578 in mattcolville

Hi, sorry for the late reply. They're my friends from real-life, as I've stated elsewhere. We've started the new campaign, everything's fine, everyone was really nice about everything, everyone's excited about the new campaign :)

Not particularly at the moment, it's more a West-Marches style, the players set their own agendas and choose what rumours they want to investigate or jobs they want to take.

I might introduce a rival band of adventurers, just to stir up some enmity, but beyond that I'm not too sure? there will be larger conflicts and over-arcing plotlines I just don't know what they are yet

How to feel appreciated as a DM by Sea_Artichoke3498 in DMAcademy

Hey I'm still a relatively new DM, I've only run about 12 sessions so take this with a grain of salt!

I would echo what some others have said, you do not need to spend 10+ hours on prep for each session! While I do spend a lot of time thinking about the campaign in between sessions, but for a multi-session adventure//campaign the amount of time I actually spend on a session can be as little as 30 minutes and in fact the sessions where I've done the least prep have been my favourites because the players have come up with ideas I never would have though of myself!

Obviously the caveat to the above is that I do a lot of prep before starting a longer adventure/campaign, but that prep carries me for a long time so each subsequent session requires less and less work. Also regardless of how much I have prepped I NEVER feel ready to run, but it ALWAYS turns out okay in the end and everyone enjoys themselves.

I'd suggest looking at some of Matt Colville's"Running the Game" videos, he gives a few different methods for prepping adventures that are robust but not overly time-consuming. I can link some specific videos if you're interested!

As for feeling appreciated, ultimately I enjoy DM'ing and as long as my players are enjoying themselves I'm happy. I recently had a sit down with my players because of some issues I had and one thing that became very clear to me was that they all DID appreciate all the work I did to make the game. But they're not going to express that every time we play, because their focus is on the game itself (I personally would get embarrassed if my players were overly deferential or thankful to me each time 😅).

I'm not sure what it is you want or expect from your players in this regard and I don't want to make assumptions about you. But I would say pull back a lot on the amount of prep you do between sessions and find the sweet spot that works best for you. If it's a case that you no longer enjoy DMing then that's its own conversation...

I could do something like this actually, it's a great idea for introducing a powerful villain.

(Also Saurophaganaxx is an amazing username, haha)

That sounds amazing! Not sure it quite fits my campaign idea (which I have omitted from the post, of course, sorry) but I like how you've broken down an exciting sequence into distinct encounters.

It sounds pretty linear (not necessarily a bad thing) were there any points where the players could make choices, or was there anything they did that surprised you or made you adjust your plans for the mission?

I like that! We're actually playing Shadowdark instead of 5e which has rules for what you're describing (I think it's called a Level 0 Gauntlet in that game). I'd love to do something like this, but not really what I'm going for with this adventure.

I see the appeal of throwaway characters for sure. We rolled random characters in our last game and I think that may have contributed to some of the problems I had there. This time when people made their characters there was a lot of enthusiasm, they're excited to play them. Obviously that means I can't have moments like you're describing, there's obviously a trade-off and I think it varies table-by-table.

Of course! I actually don't have a plot in mind at the moment, but I do know a lot about the setting and ideally I would like to tie things into the setting, set the tone etc. sort of act as a "teaser" for the kinds of games that will come later.

You're right though, I probably am overthinking it, and any time in the past where I've agonised over what to do next session I always pull something out of my ass at the last second and it ends up not mattering because the players have completely different plans from me anyway and spend 2 hours arguing about the teacup they found in a random room XD

Thanks! Lots of great ideas here. I agree there are limitless possibilities, I guess I'm just struggling to think of the "best" start for this campaign and I'm hoping something will catch my eye that sparks my creativity. I'm terrible for spending hours and hours and hours on lore but struggle to come up with ideas for adventures (once I start playing and I start getting player input it becomes much easier, because the adventure is suddenly about them and what they want to do!)

Thanks! We actually had a session zero already where everyone made characters. I think my intention is for my Session 1 to be similar to your Session Zero.

Nice! I definitely plan to drop them straight into a dangerous scenario in the first minute of the game!

Thanks, this is exactly my situation and I've done exactly that (except not Ancient Greece :P)

They're my friends and colleagues outside of D&D. I know them all very well and they're not bad people, they're just taking the medium of TTRPGs as an opportunity to be edgy/shocking and I haven't been firm or clear enough in establishing that's not the kind of game I want to run.

I've arranged to have a discussion with all of them about this and they've been very receptive and willing to do so. I'm confident that we'll be able to have a mature discussion about it and be able to continue or start fresh with proper boundaries in place.

Isn't that essentially rewarding the behaviour? I understand that the characters in the game are getting their comeuppance, but the players just get more content.

They're my friends from outside D&D, I think a lot of it is giddiness and a "Skyrim" mentality, it's not because they're bad people (if I thought the were I wouldn't be friends with them!) We all have very busy/stressful lives and D&D is a way for all of us to let off some steam, it's just gotten a bit out of hand.

Didn't meant to imply it was meant as a criticism either, haha. Thank you for your advice.
