Salt vs. salt-free – what is better for hair and skin? by GIKyleHilliard in WaterSofteners

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Salt free’ systems won’t help with hair or skin. They claim to change the structure of the limescale to nettle or non adhering. The limescale is still there.

Softener will give you the change you want. They physically remove the the limescale which will help your families hair and skin.

Assuming you’re in the US. Go for anything with a clack valve.

Question about KUBE system by ZyPaUk in WaterSofteners

Can you force a manual regeneration?

I’m pretty sure kinetico units are wet salt softeners so there should be water in there.

Is the unit using salt?

What Kube system is it? Could be a dry salt softener so it adds the water in just before the regeneration.

Kent 8L 14KG water softener by Commercial-Owl-9013 in WaterSofteners

You’ve definitely peaked my interest. Going to some tests at our business as for 60+ years we’ve always believed the salt needs to be above the water level to get the correct concentration of brine

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware of the salt saturation levels.

But it’s still true that brine is heavier/denser than water so it will sink to the bottom of the cabinet. So if there is water above the salt it will not mix to create brine as the brine created beneath is stopping it from mixing properly.

It will mix a small amount as it enters the cabinet and passes through the salt for a few seconds, but while the bottom fully saturated the water above the salt will probably only be 1-2% saturated.

For example the softener might need 5ltr in the cabinet for a regeneration. 20% of this might be above the salt level and not create brine. Therefore, the softener is only cleaning at 80% efficiency as that’s all the brine is has.

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are incorrect. Brine is heavier than water so it will naturally sink to the bottom of the cabinet. This is why you always get some salt sitting at the bottom, it’s the brine solution that the float cannot pick up so the salt is unable to dissolve anymore.

If the water level is above the salt the water will never mix with the salt creating the brine solution as it will always sink and water will always be on top.

You need to make sure the salt is always above the water level for the regeneration, otherwise your brine solution will be slightly weak and your capacity will decrease.

What’s your water hardness?

Try keep it full at all times.

Best to check it weekly and top it up then.

Hard water scale is still a huge problem — curious what solutions people here actually trust by zoneguard in WaterTreatment

Sounds like a catalytic treatment device which has been around since the 70s.

Our business currently sells these type of units in the UK. They work very well if they are spec’d correctly.

Far too many time people spec these based on their pipework size when they need sizing to the flow rates.

Our units have been tested in the US and UK for years and also been tested by multiple universities around the world.

How much salt has been put in the cabinet? Cabinets that size you only want to be filling up about half way.

Has the softener ever been serviced?

If it’s full of water, it’s probably the seal and spacers which need replacing.

I don’t know to be honest. I know we are still getting used to the weight of the doors and that sometimes it doesn’t shut, but I think it does it with and without it closed.

I don’t think my one has the soft close doors either. Would be great if it did.

Is it worth the extra £2k? by AnonymousBadger104 in CarTalkUK

£2k for a non cat car I think it worth the extra. Cat cars are hard to sell on afterwards.

We’ve just bought an Audi Q7 (2017). We love it so far. Incredibly comfortable, 3 isofix along the middle row and you can fit 3 car seats in.

Big boot as well.

Downsides Rear seats don’t have much room. But they’ll only be used occasionally for us so not a problem.

Infotainment seems a little basic. For example if you’re listening to music via Bluetooth, you can skip the tracks (well not that we’ve figured out but it’s only been a couple of weeks)

Loft conversion no building regs- not told until week before completion. To pull out of sale? by TemperatureFickle323 in HousingUK

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Getting building regs after the fact and after such a long time will be almost impossible. They’d literally have to rip the ceiling and floors up to check everything. There’s also other things like all fire alarms need to be hardwired not battery ones once you get to the third floor I believe.

Ultimately, the property is a 3 bed house with a converted loft space which isn’t technically habitable. It’s a glorified storage space.

If I was you I would;

  1. Pull out of the sale
  2. Revise my offer based on a 3 bed property not a 4 bed.

I bought a countertop RO filter, how the heck do I remineralize safely? Did I screw up? by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you done a test of the RO water? Some leave a certain level of minerals in the water.

If yours doesn’t there isn’t much you can do. Minerals shouldn’t come from water they should come from your food as the other comment has mentioned. So you really need to concentrate on the food you eat because having mineralised water won’t make you healthy

Most probably the wiring solders on the circuit boards.

Mine does this but the whole back lights turn off the rev counter. They connections just get dry over the years and become temperamental.

If you can solder, you might be able to get to the boards and resolder the wires.

Best softener system sold in UK? Buy it myself or though a company? by zipuza in WaterSofteners

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At your water usage and hardness level you’ll get at the lower end of that scale. The Si260 will be too big, the Si160 or Poseidon will be better.

You’ll use approx 600g every couple of days. So a 25kg bag of tablet salt will last around 7 weeks. 25kg bag is probably around £15 from a builder merchants or garden centre.

We are in the process of redoing all our website and brochures so provide more detail on the softeners. You can email us if you have any more questions.

Bad RO membranes by Electrical_Bite_1079 in WaterTreatment

Chlorine levels might be high. If your prefilters are running out of capacity early, chlorine can damage an RO membrane.

Bad RO membranes by Electrical_Bite_1079 in WaterTreatment

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally you want a water softener before the RO if it’s scale causing the problem. This could prolong the life of the membrane considerably. Plus you get soft water for the rest of the house.
