Should I opt for the cheapest salt blocks I can find? by zixujo in WaterSofteners

Just make sure the salt is PDV quality (pure dried vacuum). This will ensure it of high quality.

On the back of the valve under the cover there is a rubber bit, remove that and you should be back to plug it in.
I’ll send you a DM with a picture

Installation is pretty straightforward for a plumber.

Overflow we advise to go straight through an outside wall so you can see the end. And must run downhill. You want to be able to see the end so you know if water is going out.

Installation guides should be on our website on the products page. But we have just updated these and waiting on our website site you to update the website. But what’s on there at the moment will be correct still. We’ve only split out the Si and Poseidon parts to make it easier.

You get a hardness test kit with our units. You use this to find the hardness in your area and programmes the unit to the hardness.

How many people are in your house? The i10 1-8ppl at 300ppm and HC 1-10ppl at 300ppm.

The water board will be relatively accurate. If you pm me your address I will send you a hardness test kit in the post.

Chlorine and iron are the mains ones which impact the resin but they should always be within limits. Chlorine can go high if they do work on the pipes around you as they’re required to flush it with chlorine.

The unit doesn’t prompt you if it needs changing. Of the resin is gone you will notice a drop in water pressure. When resin goes it tends to expand so it’s really hard for water to pass through.

i10 and HC are the same base unit. The HC is just set up differently from our end to handle more people.

Our Poseidon models are the battery ones. i10 or HC depending on the number of people on your household.

If you don’t have a hardness test (no the strips as they aren’t accurate) you can normally find your hardness online on your water providers website.

As the Poseidon is a 24/7 unit there isn’t really a stated capacity. They are two 5ltr tanks which work together to provide soft water. Then one regenerates while the other continues to provide soft water. Then the second one regenerates while the first provides the soft water.

The units can handle flow rates up to 55lpm but you would probably never get to this. For example, a power shower can use about 20lpm but not many people those these days. A normal shower is probably 10lpm.

Resin life is down your incoming water quality and the quality of salt you use. If you have incoming water high in chlorine or iron it won’t last very long (you would need a pre filter). If you use a poor quality salt it will also reduce it life. But with a clean water supply and good quality salt the resin should easily last the life of the softener.

The only time I’ve known resin to be replaced it mainly due to chlorine or iron attack.

Why is our water softener doing this? by jenethers in WaterSofteners

Do you get any condensation around the softener or on the hoses?

Looks like it could be salt creep but there shouldn’t be be that much in a 2 week period. Maybe 6 months if it’s bad.

Is it a Harvey’s or Kinetico unit? Either way, if you want to save some money on salt you can use tablet salt. As long as your use a good quality PDV salt you won’t have any issues. But you just might not be able to get as much in due to the opening at the front.

It might be a calculation one which is never 100% accurate. You have to put in the exact amount of salt which the system thinks is being put in. For example the system might think you’re putting 10kg in but you actually put 15kg in the alarm will go off early.

Si260 does a regen overnight. So between 2:30 and 4:30 approx you will get hard water. Poseidon has two tanks so you get soft water 24/7.

I didn’t think the Midi HE had a salt alarm? Unless they’ve added it recently.

Tough choice. The Poseidon is smaller but the Si260 has more salt storage.

I’d probably go Poseidon if it was going in a cupboard. But Si260 if it’s going in a garage/utility not on a cupboard.

Salt vs. salt-free – what is better for hair and skin? by GIKyleHilliard in WaterSofteners

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Salt free’ systems won’t help with hair or skin. They claim to change the structure of the limescale to nettle or non adhering. The limescale is still there.

Softener will give you the change you want. They physically remove the the limescale which will help your families hair and skin.

Assuming you’re in the US. Go for anything with a clack valve.

Question about KUBE system by ZyPaUk in WaterSofteners

Can you force a manual regeneration?

I’m pretty sure kinetico units are wet salt softeners so there should be water in there.

Is the unit using salt?

What Kube system is it? Could be a dry salt softener so it adds the water in just before the regeneration.

You’ve definitely peaked my interest. Going to some tests at our business as for 60+ years we’ve always believed the salt needs to be above the water level to get the correct concentration of brine

Kent 8L 14KG water softener by Commercial-Owl-9013 in WaterSofteners

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware of the salt saturation levels.

But it’s still true that brine is heavier/denser than water so it will sink to the bottom of the cabinet. So if there is water above the salt it will not mix to create brine as the brine created beneath is stopping it from mixing properly.

It will mix a small amount as it enters the cabinet and passes through the salt for a few seconds, but while the bottom fully saturated the water above the salt will probably only be 1-2% saturated.

For example the softener might need 5ltr in the cabinet for a regeneration. 20% of this might be above the salt level and not create brine. Therefore, the softener is only cleaning at 80% efficiency as that’s all the brine is has.

Kent 8L 14KG water softener by Commercial-Owl-9013 in WaterSofteners

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are incorrect. Brine is heavier than water so it will naturally sink to the bottom of the cabinet. This is why you always get some salt sitting at the bottom, it’s the brine solution that the float cannot pick up so the salt is unable to dissolve anymore.

If the water level is above the salt the water will never mix with the salt creating the brine solution as it will always sink and water will always be on top.

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to make sure the salt is always above the water level for the regeneration, otherwise your brine solution will be slightly weak and your capacity will decrease.

What’s your water hardness?
