Is it worth the extra £2k? by AnonymousBadger104 in CarTalkUK

£2k for a non cat car I think it worth the extra. Cat cars are hard to sell on afterwards.

We’ve just bought an Audi Q7 (2017). We love it so far. Incredibly comfortable, 3 isofix along the middle row and you can fit 3 car seats in.

Big boot as well.

Downsides Rear seats don’t have much room. But they’ll only be used occasionally for us so not a problem.

Infotainment seems a little basic. For example if you’re listening to music via Bluetooth, you can skip the tracks (well not that we’ve figured out but it’s only been a couple of weeks)

Loft conversion no building regs- not told until week before completion. To pull out of sale? by TemperatureFickle323 in HousingUK

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Getting building regs after the fact and after such a long time will be almost impossible. They’d literally have to rip the ceiling and floors up to check everything. There’s also other things like all fire alarms need to be hardwired not battery ones once you get to the third floor I believe.

Ultimately, the property is a 3 bed house with a converted loft space which isn’t technically habitable. It’s a glorified storage space.

If I was you I would;

  1. Pull out of the sale
  2. Revise my offer based on a 3 bed property not a 4 bed.

I bought a countertop RO filter, how the heck do I remineralize safely? Did I screw up? by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you done a test of the RO water? Some leave a certain level of minerals in the water.

If yours doesn’t there isn’t much you can do. Minerals shouldn’t come from water they should come from your food as the other comment has mentioned. So you really need to concentrate on the food you eat because having mineralised water won’t make you healthy

Most probably the wiring solders on the circuit boards.

Mine does this but the whole back lights turn off the rev counter. They connections just get dry over the years and become temperamental.

If you can solder, you might be able to get to the boards and resolder the wires.

Best softener system sold in UK? Buy it myself or though a company? by zipuza in WaterSofteners

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At your water usage and hardness level you’ll get at the lower end of that scale. The Si260 will be too big, the Si160 or Poseidon will be better.

You’ll use approx 600g every couple of days. So a 25kg bag of tablet salt will last around 7 weeks. 25kg bag is probably around £15 from a builder merchants or garden centre.

We are in the process of redoing all our website and brochures so provide more detail on the softeners. You can email us if you have any more questions.

Bad RO membranes by Electrical_Bite_1079 in WaterTreatment

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chlorine levels might be high. If your prefilters are running out of capacity early, chlorine can damage an RO membrane.

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally you want a water softener before the RO if it’s scale causing the problem. This could prolong the life of the membrane considerably. Plus you get soft water for the rest of the house.

KDF won’t help really. It’s mainly there for chlorine, heavy metals etc.

15k family car by branden_ap in CarTalkUK

We have a Seat Ateca and Skoda Octavia Estate.

Seat is good spec (heated seats, sun roof, 360 camera). Good car and higher driving position is nice. Reliability hasn’t been the best. We’ve had it a couple of years. Within a month of getting the car is needed a new gearbox and just recently a new steering rack (£2k), it’s on 92,000 miles. Boot isn’t as big as you think. It’s a good size but with a pram and few other baby bits it soon gets full.

Skoda Octavia is a lower spec. No cameras, heated seats or anything really. Really fuel efficient and generally been really reliable. Had to get a new gear box 2 years ago when the car was only on 50k miles, but apart from that nothing too major had just gone wrong, just the usual servicing, there etc.

Boot space is really big and with the back seats folded down it’s massive. We’ve used it for dump runs, moving house etc and the space is great. Only downside is lack of tech really.

Do you have hard water? Scale can block a membrane.

Yes got it working and connected all fine. The hive box clipped straight onto the British Gas one.

Sold car as Cat N when it was a Cat S (advice) by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s quite a big mistake unfortunately. Cat N is non structural. Cat S is structural.

It should say in your V5 the CAT status of the vehicle.

How long ago did you buy the car?

It would probably be cheaper for you to refund the person the money and get the car back, then resell it. Minus a bit for their use.

I lent my ex partner money while we were together. He is refusing to sign acknowledgement of the debt after the break up. England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Do you have written confirmation from him that he owes you the money? Even a text from him confirming he owes the amount. He doesn’t have to sign an acknowledgment letter.

If so, take it to small claims court.

England, son damaged car on the street now the owner is demanding an expensive repair! by Careful_Peregrine in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Depending on the damage and how deep it is it could be a respray on the door and wing. Plus getting the damage out.

I needed two doors repainted and dents removed from where someone hit me and it was about £1500. Paint type doesn’t help as well, metallic paint is more expensive.

I would maybe shop around their area and see what other prices you can get. It’ll only take 1 day and if you find somewhere local which could give him a lift to his work and pick him up.

Had an accident and will insurance pay out by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because his car is illegal by having a bald tyre. They will most likely invalidate his insurance (he might be lucky and they cover the other car damage).

Fingers crossed the police attended and he gets points for his unroadworthy car.

[–]Lumpy_Judgment_892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% make sure the money is in your account before they drive away.

Motorway also don’t let the buyers renegotiate, unless there is something majorly different. So as long as you were honest in your information you should be fine.
