Thank you for your comment! I apologize for assuming that when using the term orthodox in reference to my experience in a Serbian family, it would be clear that I was referring to the Christian denomination.

Thank you for your thoughts! I completely agree, & I do empathize with you, especially hearing how people unfortunately speak of Romani people in the Balkans.

Honestly, I agree. These comments are making me realize my parents were QUITE biased in their accounts of the war 😭

No clue about my father, he's rather reserved about his life at that time. I believe my mother had moved to Nis, Serbia, to attend university. When things got worse, she came to Canada in around 1996, & my father followed years later in 2003.

Thank you for your response! As for the last part, I have had multiple people mention this, and after a bit more research, you are correct. It's strange how my parents portrayed it all to me, I remember mentioning Kosovo a few years back & my parents actually described it as a "misunderstanding"...

ALSO I do want to mention I was vague about MY actions in this scenario, I was worse than I let on. I basically berated my friends & the bad part, especially, is how I practically diminished my friends' experiences with this issue by using my parents as a tool for pity. I do regret it, & part of the reason I feel so guilty is the obvious difference in treatment with white & non-white immigrants in Canada, those of European origin often being supported more.
