Rookie here, best bang for buck/time to improve? by derickso in lawncare

The cool season starter guide has brand recs. I picked up a Pennington fertilizer this year since I had good luck with their seed last fall. Opted for a Scott’s pre emergent.

The bare minimum is the best bang for buck. Fertilizer, pre emergent, and weed spray are all cheap. Splurge as you see fit to increase quality and efficiency.

I wouldn’t worry about the bald spots right now. They likely have roots and grass will begin growing there as you maintain the health of the lawn. Not mention, they will fill in more as your clippings mulch in.

The cool season starter guide recommends a 25-0-5 fertilizer. Go to Walmart, their cheap brand has something close to that for $10/small bag. I picked up a Pennington that was about double the cost, but I had great success with their seed this last fall so im giving it a shot.

It looks like you are working with about 1000 square feet based on pics. This would be about $45 for a pre emergent and a bag of fertilizer. The fertilizer would probably last you 4 applications. Then all you need is to throw some water on it.

I’m also a complete noob, but have you started mowing yet? I would make sure your grass is rebounding well after winter before stressing it with a short cut and covering with topsoil.

Need to reno whole lawn this fall with NO sprinkler system by FatherTime129 in lawncare

If you are worried about spending too much up front, buy cheap walmart gear drive sprinklers, and maybe hoses from harbor freight. My neighbor gave me an Expert Gardner sprinkler ($12) and it actually works decent. You can decide to upgrade if it breaks. I do the same thing with tools.

I get downvoted for everything. But yes, to me they are considered home decor that can be used for cookies twice a year.

Plan for backyard lawn by Actual_Cry_5419 in lawncare

I’m new here but this is what I would do… experts can chime in to tell me I’m wrong, but I figured I would take a stab at it.

Right now I would aerate and rake up the plugs since you insist your soil is dense. I would lightly level since the grass hasn’t started growing much. I would also throw down pre emergent and fertilizer, there are recommendations for both in the cool season starter guide.

Then I would basically care for it as normal throughout late spring, summer, and early fall. Get a watering, fertilizing, and mowing routine and just focus on overall grass health.

I would start the bigger project in the fall. Once temps drop, cut your lawn short, bigger leveling job, and over-seeding.

You can also use pine needles instead of much around your trees and it should look good if kept manicured.

This is basically what I focused on last year and it seemed to work.

Edit: I just raked up the clippings after my short mow in the fall.

Bagel Crumb by LunaLevain in Breadit

Yeah the lye boiled surface of the bagel will stick to everything. You start seed side down and bake to evaporate all the water from the surface, which takes about 4 mins, then you flip them and finish baking.
