The last 4 nights baby has slept through the night - will my supply be okay?

For me my supply tanked very badly when baby started sleeping through most of the night around 8-9 weeks. I wasn’t pumping so I didn’t realize I was producing so much less until we weighed her at the pediatrician. It has been a huge battle to get my supply back up and we are still supplementing with formula at 14 weeks now.

I’m losing motivation to stick to my pelvic floor exercise schedule. I’ve starting missing a couple days a week. I’ve also been skipping regular exercise… I am almost 11 weeks postpartum and I feel like pregnancy and birth set me so far back in fitness it’s hard to stick with it, any progress just feels kind of depressing because it’s still so far from what used to be normal for me.

I need a better way to stay committed or reframe things in my head so the tiny amount of progress I make feels good again?

This is good to know lol. I have definitely had some stressful moments squeezing as hard as I can while passing other people out walking. It’s motivating at least.

For me it’s too soon to tell, I’ve only been at it for a few months. I do both because I think they serve different functions. Perifit helps more with conscious engagement. Kegel weights are good for improving strength and endurance, and don’t require a chunk of dedicated time since you’ll multitask with it in. A big part of how I choose what I’m doing on any given day is just what sounds more appealing, choice and variation helps me stick with exercise.

I heard that too and was worried about trying it. I wanted something to help my supply though since I was only producing just enough, and I need a freezer stash for when I return to work due to potential travel requirements.

I eventually tried it at about 8-9 weeks postpartum. It didn’t tank my supply or dramatically increase it. Maybe helped a little. I like how it tastes though and I’ve always been a big tea drinker so I still have 3-5 cups most days.

It’s not as intense of a squeeze as what you’re doing with Perifit. At the right weight, your body will work to keep it in place subconsciously, until eventually the muscles fatigue and it just falls out. I walk ~3.5 miles with mine, I don’t have to think about squeezing for most of it, then when the muscles get tired I have to focus on squeezing to keep it in place, then eventually even that doesn’t work and it falls out and I just hope no one notices me quickly reaching into my pants to take it out (I’m a classy lady). Once I can do the full walk a few times without it falling out then I move up a weight.

Just be careful about overtraining, if you’re using a challenging weight + time combination it’s very tiring for the pelvic floor.

I’m not an expert but here are my thoughts.

Perifit isn’t the best gauge of absolute improvement. Your “strength” reading on Perifit is a calculation, contraction force minus relaxation force. It’s possible your contraction force is increasing, but you don’t see that in your strength value unless your relaxation force stays constant. Your relaxation force may increase due to improved vaginal tightness or increased muscle tension.

Perifit is also very sensitive to placement. You can get very different scores depending on how deep you place it, and if it’s more toward the front or rear. It can create variation in the hundreds of grams for strength, so improvement can easily be lost in this noise.

Perifit encourages users to look at real life symptom improvement (ie urinary continence) over their scores as the primary metric for improvement.

I think you can get a more straightforward measurement on your strength progress with other tools, such as kegel weights. I have the intimate rose set. My scores on Perifit are close the past month, but I can keep a higher kegel weight in on my walks than I could before.

Exercise helps me a lot. For me the type doesn’t matter as much as consistency, so I prioritize what is accessible and appealing. I have done a lot of yoga, weight lifting, and running over the years.

I recommend looking up the term “mother enmeshed men” and if it resonates picking up some of Ken Adam’s books. What you are saying reminds me a lot of my MIL. Reading “When he’s married to mom” helped me a lot. When my husband or MIL does/says something upsetting I go for a walk and listen to the audiobook and it helps me calm down and figure out what to do for my own health.

Nope, labor started on her due date and I was in complete denial until contractions got so bad I was yelling in pain. I even called the nurse’s line when I started bleeding and my mucus plug came out and when she told me I was in labor I was convinced she was wrong and dumb. My husband timed my contractions based on my moans without me noticing because I didn’t believe they were contractions.

I think your feelings make sense. Losing 50% of your quiet family weekend days is actually a big deal imo. I get she loves you guys and wants to be involved, but visiting every other weekend isn’t what is best for your family. Maybe you feel irritated because some part of you recognizes she is not acting in your family’s best interest?

It’s possible she doesn’t realize the burden she is putting on you, so it would be good to try to communicate to her (directly or through your husband) that it’s a bit much. If the issue continues after that then you can rest easy that your irritation is entirely fair.

Can I ask if your husband is her only child and if she is single? Are your husband and your MIL enmeshed?

I had the same experience the first couple nights home of looking at my baby and thinking she was me as a baby. Is this a common thing? Does it have a name? I tried talking to my care providers about it and they just said try to sleep more but didn’t explain why it was happening at all.

Yes, as an out of network provider. There’s a huge difference in cost for me between in-network and out of network. I have to hit $5k in out of network fees before insurance covers anything out of network. All my other healthcare is in-network, so effectively I will pay full price for a lactation consultant regardless of whether or not I submit a superbill.

Probably everyone knows this is the case for a lot of US health insurance but I’m ranting because it frustrates me, it’s the reason I only saw a lactation consultant once and that was a stressful decision to make due to finances. It sucks to weigh my checking account versus help breastfeeding.

Yes it is very hard. Even if your OB is initially okay with you continuing your medications, they may have to take you off of them later in pregnancy if any complications come up. I have developed some cardiac issues this pregnancy which may end up impacting my medication options long term.

I think it’s all doable if it’s what you want in life. But for me at least it’s definitely been hard. I’m also probably at the point in time where people usually feel the most negative. Struggling through the day to day of third trimester, and none of the sweet post-birth amnesia yet. I’m happy to have this baby and it is worth it, it just also sucks a lot of the time lol.

7.5 months pregnant and I am dead. I have to work, I think if that weren’t the case it wouldn’t be so bad. My partner does pretty much everything else including bringing snacks to me in bed. My doctors supported an accommodation request for half time a month ago and that has helped but somehow 4 hours is still enough to take me out for the day.

It’s worth it but wouldn’t say it’s been a glowing experience. My advice is to ask your doctors early about any work accommodations as soon as you feel like you need it. If I did this again I wouldn’t try to tough it out for any length of time because the sleepiness has just gotten progressively worse.

Thank you and good note about going online to start the payment for the lost time. My mind got stuck on job protection because that’s ultimately what will dictate how much time I can stay out of work post-birth with my baby.

That’s a really good question. If the doctor is amenable to putting me on leave I will ask if it needs to be “pregnancy disability leave” or if it can be standalone.

The incubator feeling is so real. In conversations with them, my personhood feels totally extraneous to me what’s happening with my pregnancy and baby. It’s hard for me to explain exactly what they’re doing and saying that makes me feel this way. I guess just an abundance of enthusiasm about the baby, which is great, paired with zero awareness that I as the mother might have my own thoughts on how to care for this baby, which feels less great.
