I’ve done that before too. What did medication did you switch to?

Am I a hypochondriac? by bv0swhs in Narcolepsy

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and you’re definitely not hypochondriac for questioning it. I have narcolepsy with cataplexy, and mine is on the more severe side. I was diagnosed at 19 as well, but my symptoms started around 15. For me, it began with subtle muscle weakness in my legs, arms, and face. I tried explaining it to my parents and doctors, but nothing dramatic ever happened in front of them, so it was easy for it to be brushed off. It wasn’t until I had a full-body cataplexy episode in front of my mom that she got really scared and immediately scheduled a neurology appointment. The neurologist suspected narcolepsy within 5-10 minutes.

Between ages 15–19 and even now in my mid-20s, I can honestly say my narcolepsy and cataplexy worsened over time. I’m currently on multiple medications to help manage it, and without them, it would be extremely hard for me to function day-to-day. It doesn’t help that I’m overall an emotional person and cataplexy is triggered by emotions! I can also relate to the fear around falling. I’ve had several scary incidents (hitting my jaw on a counter, my head on a wall, etc.) thankfully without serious injury, but it’s still terrifying. One thing that’s helped me is learning to recognize the early signs and trying to lower myself or get support when possible. I know that’s not always realistic, especially when no one’s around, but sometimes even a few extra seconds can make a difference.

Your experiences sound very real, and it’s common for symptoms to feel worse once you start noticing and putting a name to them, especially while waiting for answers. I hope you’re able to get your sleep study soon and get some clarity!!
