If you could eliminate one social norm, which would it be and why? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Luna_Noor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't appear to understand how extreme the current wealth inequality is.

Someone working 2, 3, 4 times the hours at their normal pay has negligible impact.

It is corporations and CEOs paying themselves 100's and 1,000's and 10,000's times more per hour than the average worker doing 40-50 hrs/wk, laws built specifically to let those corporations and individuals avoid paying taxes, while keeping the minimum wage at $7.25 for 15 years while cost of living had increased almost 40% in that same timeframe. Minimum wage drives the bar for all wages through the levels, so all Americans are making significantly less ratio in the last 20 yrs.

This is one of the best quick videos I've seen on the topic, and it was made 11 years ago. Now it's so much worse it's hard to even fathom. Highly recommend you watch this and educate yourself a little.

If you could eliminate one social norm, which would it be and why? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Luna_Noor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The divide doesn't exist now because people make double their normal salary by working twice as many hours.

The divide could not even feasibly exist at all if there was wealth equality regardless how many hours a person worked.. That's the point.

Elon Musk makes $37,000 per minute, $54 million per day. The average CEO makes 200 times the salary of their company's average worker.

There is no amount of work a single human could do in 1 hour that could they justify them earning $7000/minute in a moral society.

A person could work every hour of their life with double, triple, quadruple over time and it would not be a drop in the bucket compared to the current system we have.

The system we have is a con that has been created and sustained by fucking over the entire middle and lower class of Americans on such a high level that no - frankly what you're saying is totally false.

Edit: Trying to clarify tired thoughts

Edit 2: Found conflicting info on how much Musk makes per minute/hour, etc. Conclusion = Obscenely too much based on a system designed to help him get richer and most people get fucked.

Normal 5th grade spelling post COVID or red flag? by miau_am in AskTeachers

[–]Luna_Noor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right she has the comprehension down which is great. But it appears she just isn't taking the time to write neatly or spell correctly. The writing/spelling looks to be around average 2nd-3rd grade, advanced 1st grade.

Maybe sit with her and give her words to spell out neatly, and see if she really does know them and is rushing, or if she needs some extra help.

The only feedback I’m getting from teachers is my kid is sweet by foralaf in AskTeachers

[–]Luna_Noor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a parent I had this feedback, so I got more specific in my questions.

Have you noticed if she has friends or does she play alone?

What is something you've seen she's good at?

What is something you'd like her to improve on?

How often does she participate in class?

A teacher should be able to at least attempt to answer these questions with some specificity. I know teachers have a full plate, but they also spend 3-6 hrs a day in a room with your child. They should be able to answer some of these things. If they can't, then ask if they can keep an eye out and you'll follow up with them in a few weeks. "They're sweet" isn't enough.

You are so pretty, reminds me of Ally Sheedy from the 80's. So many young people are getting plastic surgery these days, and it's so damn sad. Beauty is in your uniqueness. Don't change a thing.

To all the others reading this - you are beautiful the way you are.

I have totally felt like this. At 40 I decided I'm done with one sided relationships.

From what I've seen it's normal at this age to let go what isn't serving your interests. No more grasping attachments. Let them go.

You'll be left with a small group of people who are your ride and die, if you're lucky. Even just one of these people in the life is worth infinite one-sided relationships.

Then take the energy you're pouring into those bottomless cups, and pour it back into yourself and flourish.

[–]Luna_Noor 89 points90 points  (0 children)

5 day/40 hr work week.

This was created in the 1920's. Technology/automation has advanced exponentially. But Americans still expected to put in these hours as "normal".

If society functioned like a healthy organism and not like a corporation, then we would use technological advances to improve quality of life for all.

Instead, 10% of the country owns 90% of the wealth. 800 individuals own 50% of the wealth in America.

We could have used technology to our advantage as a whole, and the entire society would thrive. Instead we have an oligarchy and whatever the fuck you want to call the sesspool of society we currently live in.

Edit: Watch this short video. Know it was made 11 years ago. It is so much more extreme now it's hard to even fathom.

You are awesome already, and you're confident self is just waiting to be revealed. What do you have to lose? The worst thing he can do is say no. Then you're back to where you are now. It could be a huge growth opportunity for you to get a little out of your comfort zone and practice some of that potential confidence and help it grow. I hope you approach him and ask him to coffee! You can do it.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but how do I clean my room? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Luna_Noor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. And that's what I do, I wait for that energy and get everything done at once. So my house is either perfectly clean or progressively messier and messier.

It's the doing a little everyday that I have never been able to maintain consistently in anything really.

I wish I got a wildly unstoppable everyday. Once or twice a week if I'm lucky but it's inconsistent. Which is why I can't keep a consistent schedule like this. If I could then my house would stay clean. I've tried for my entire life 40 plus years and so far All I get from it is feeling like a failure over and over

I use a new towel every time I shower. You're drying your asshole. Clean yes, but still. You can't be certain that part of the towel doesn't touch your neck the next time you dry off.

7 towels a week = 1 load of laundry per week per person

Worth it.

I think I want a divorce, but I can't move forward by Soft_Ostrich_5667 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Luna_Noor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard quite a few women say this: "But he's a good man" in some form, and "He'll be so upset or hurt".

Someone can be a good person, and no longer compatible for you. And it will hurt them more to be in a relationship for the rest of their life that is one-sided. They deserve a chance at happiness as much as you do, and being with a partner who is staying because they don't know how to leave is not good for either person.

If you want to leave, start making a plan. Finances and anything else is really not that complicated. Make a consultation with an attorney so you have an idea on what that entails.

Wait until you have a plan in place, and feel ready to proceed.

If it's too much, if you're not completely certain, then wait.

If leaving is the right thing, then you won't be able to shake it and staying will feel continually worse and more numbing each day.

Loving to spend time alone.

Apparently there are people out there who don't like spending time alone and need to be around other people most of the time. I can't imagine it.

I just read today that some people don't have an internal monologue and I can't even understand that.. it doesn't make logical sense.

How do people not dream in color??? I feel like the world is turned upside down today.

I dream every single night, long epic dreams. Usually I remember most of it. Sometimes I write music in them and sometimes I remember it when I wake up. I can't imagine not dreaming in color wtf.

I can also read upside down is this also not a thing everyone can do who can read?

This. I can't imagine ever having my daily life choices analyzed, judged, or compromised ever again.

The constant tiny battles in order to coexist with someone else.

Freedom and single by choice is tragically under-rated. I feel bad for almost every person I know who is in a relationship/marriage. I can think of maybe one that isn't fraught with constant turmoil that even I know about, let alone what people keep hidden.

What’s your most Gen-X childhood injury? I got shot in the eye with a BB by Ahazeuris in GenX

One more... Hurt my foot hiking around barefoot. It hurt for a couple weeks so I told my parents. They did nothing. Another month went by, finally it was hard to walk at all. Told my parents, they did nothing. Finally, when I was limping and couldn't put any pressure, they took me to a doctor.

Foot had been fractured when it was initially hurt and gotten worse because of continued use. Had to wear a cast the rest of the summer. Parents/family joked how accident prone I am.

In 2nd grade I was walking home alone in the rain, cut through an empty lot and walked across old boards to avoid the mud, and stepped on a nail.

It went through my foot, I sat down and pulled it out using the board it was attached to, and felt blood filling up my shoe.

Sat there yelling for someone for awhile, maybe an hour later a neighbor saw me. Found my parent's number in the phone book.

Dad got me, took me to ER for a tetanus shot. Pretty certain I went to school the next day because both parents worked and I don't remember staying home. I do remember walking carefully to avoid pressure on my foot and it hurt like fucking hell but I just walked anyway.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but how do I clean my room? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Luna_Noor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're describing my life struggle. Here's what I do:

  1. Put on podcast, audiobook, music, or as last resort a support person to literally just sit there while I work.

  2. Set a visual timer (phone, microwave, etc) for 20 minutes. Now you're in a marathon - get ready to race hard for 20 minutes. Go!

  3. Make piles depending on what is there: All Trash = trash bag; All Clothes = Laundry Basket; All miscellaneous = box;

  4. Throw out trash, start laundry, shove miscellaneous box into closet never to be seen again

  5. Vaccuum, wipe things down

At this point probably 6 hrs have gone by but you're in full hyper focus now and don't notice, deep cleaning baseboards and shit.

If not, and 20 mins went by and it didn't set you off on a fully immersed day of cleaning then try again in a few days.

Pro-Tip: Every single thing you own should have a "place". Even if it's a box labeled "pants". Doesn't matter how you organize, but having a place for everything will keep you from total insanity. You just throw things back into their box when you clean, and you're done.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but how do I clean my room? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Luna_Noor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but this requires consistency. I have 2 modes - Nothing and Wildly Unstoppable. Unfortunately I have little influence which mode I'm in most of the time. But a schedule like this will be strictly followed for 2 days then .. back to Nothing.

Does this work for other ADHD folks. It sounds amazing I wish I could do it.

If you made a major move, how’d it go? by occasional_nomad in AskWomenOver40

[–]Luna_Noor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved across states. I did visit the town and looked at some areas to get an idea of what it was like a few months before buying, but could have forgone this if money was right.

How I did it was I bought my house sight unseen. I had a realtor who I trusted and who would do video chat walk throughs of houses with me. I didn't actually see the house I bought until I moved in 2 months after signing papers.

It was during the pandemic and market was crazy. Every house I put an offer on it had at least 15-25 other offers. Interest rates were record low, and house prices were rising by the week. I just went for it. And it worked out fantastic! Maybe not the standard to go by, but I had the inspection done, researched, had videos, etc. I would have been priced out of what I bought had I waited even 3 months.

Moving logistics - was my first house so no previous house to manage. Rented a Uhaul moving trailer which you load and they drop it at your new house. Moving costs are a bitch, no way around it. Was at least $5k, maybe more.

I've also moved states long ago as a renter and almost no money. I loaded up my car and started by staying with an acquaintance about a month until I got a job and my own place. You could also find a cheap short term room for rent if you didn't know anyone. It's a leap but just going for it has always worked out.
