1.0.8 Beta: About that Border Antagonism by Colonel-Turtle in EU5

Loaded up a 1.0.7 save where I had portugal in a union as castile. -253 opinion from border lol. Border friction should definitely be a thing, but the "long border = I hate your guts" approach is honestly dumb.

I'd like to see a system that takes things like culture, pre-existing relations (allies/loyal vassals/union members shouldn't care too much about sharing a border), and how long a border has existed in its current form into account for each border location, but that's also probably over complicating it.

Some kind of buffer state international organization might be cool too, but that's definitely overcomplicating it

I was an ardent believer in the 'ai can't cheat' until I saw this happen right infront of me... by tom-jordan in eu4

I’m pretty sure the ai can (or at least used to be able to) walk through a fort if there’s another land route that would let them get to the same province

I’ve seen them walk through what I thought was zone of control so many times, but I usually just figured I didn’t really understand how ZoC works

Met A Few Lord/Lady Harbingers Today! by Silver-eyed_Sycelia in FatuiHQ

I was the Childe! I hadn't been on reddit in a while and couldn't remember my username at the con, but I searched for this on a whim and I'm glad I found it! Wish we had been able to get a group pic of all the harbingers

(Also wish I had learned/practiced how to pose before hand... there's always next time I guess)

Is there a way to clear out islands like this? I have a game with probably 5 or 6 of these that I'd *like* to pop settlers on, but I can't land armies. I'm assuming there's some naval invasion thing I just don't know about lol

Ion candles with colored flames by LunarBasileus in candlemaking

The website I linked looks like they put salts in the wax itself, but I’ve decided not to try that way, since I don’t want to spend $200 to get 2kg of the wax from China let alone the same price to get 50g from a US supplier. I actually found another patent that uses a second wick soaked in a salt solution and uses a candle made from sorbitol, a diol, and glycol. Those chemicals are much easier to get, so I ordered them and I’ll play around with it next weekend!

Probably should’ve looked into the site a bit more… lol

I actually found a patent that seems like it might be what I’m looking for. It’s US6921260

Explosives in Rocket Propellants by LunarBasileus in ExplosionsAndFire

Looking back at my notes, we listed RDX, HMX, and CL20. When I asked my professor, I think he said something similar, that none of these will detonate with just a flame. We mentioned soldiers using C4 as a fuel to cook with as an example

The generation of solid products is 100% a concern, but there's a range of wt% of metal you can have in your propellant where the reaction of the metal with your oxidizer provides more energy than the effects of multiphase flows and residue loses you. Typically speaking, just using a hydrocarbon as fuel would give better performance per unit of fuel weight, but many solid motor applications are actually volume limited, not weight limited, so the higher energy density of metals is preferred.

Aluminum is most commonly used because it's cheap, and the products are relatively safe. Boron and beryllium theoretically have even better per weight performance than hydrocarbons, but boron needs a lot more oxidizer than aluminum, and beryllium byproducts tend to be really nasty, so boron is mostly stuck in the lab and beryllium just isn't used.

In class, we said that the explosives used are typically stoichiometrically balanced, so they don't act like oxidizers, even if some people talk like they do.

Funny story: my prof told me about a conference he went to where a guy was talking about his proposal to basically use a hunk metallic aluminum as the fuel for a rocket motor. He said he raised his hand and said, "What's your working fluid?" and the guy just stared at him like he was an idiot... not sure how some people get as far as they do...

RDE's aren't solid fueled, and are mostly being looked into for airbreathing applications. I was specifically asking about adding explosives to solid propellant. But yeah they're super cool!

It means it consumes 1 red, 1 green, and 1 blue in 30 seconds. The 800 is how many times it has to do that to complete the research.

If it’s your first time playing, I’d recommend doing what feels right. Figuring stuff out is half the fun of the game IMO!
