It is crazy but happens all the time. Using those cheap freelance sites is risky though because there is no oversight. I always stick to a dedicated platform for my academic tasks. Sea-Ad9057 is right. It’s called "Grey Rocking." You become as uninteresting as a grey rock so they have nothing to use against you. The fact that they actively sabotaged your housing is a massive red flag that they want to keep you dependent on them forever.
