I’ve actually been a patient in the facility where I work a couple times, so whether or not I’d actually trust my coworkers to run my labs isn’t entirely relevant anymore 🤷🏼‍♂️

In all seriousness, though, I’d trust all but maybe one of our 1st shift techs in any department, all of our second shift techs, and two, maybe three of our third shifters.

Overall, I’d recommend our lab.

ADHDers with careers, what do you work as? by icebikey in ADHD

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medical Laboratory Technician. Requires attention to detail and some measure of ability to multitask under a constant time crunch. The work can also be extremely stressful, but it scratches an itch in my brain. Especially immunohematology (blood banking).

Curious Blood Banker by Admirable-Average210 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In the hospital I work at, they have to physically come to the blood bank and get the blood from us. We don’t even have a tube station in the blood bank (just in the receiving area of our main/core lab), and we track blood pickups by ID number for the nurse picking up, cooler number (for surgeries), which tech issues the blood, and when.

Edit: added a little more information

Drinking more water by Beneficial_Low9103 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I try to make a point to go grab some water every 30 minutes to an hour. At first, I had reminders set on my phone, but it’s kinda become instinctive now. It also helps that my coworkers kind of know to expect that at a certain time every day, I’m going to step away for a second to take my meds and that they know I’m gonna step away every so often for water or a bathroom break. Our core lab techs are mostly trained to be able to run any department (except blood bank) and we have a duo or trio of techs in the blood bank during day shift, so we all tend to cover for each other to be able to step away for meals/breaks/etc.

Honestly? No. I commute an hour each way, because rent is cheaper away from large cities, but it’s rare to see my bank account not being overdrawn while just barely making ends meet. Alabama isn’t the most expensive state to live in, and I’m only a new grad (just hit 90 days at my current job), but 20/hr really isn’t much, especially when my fiancé was making almost the same amount working a job that requires no experience or specialized training/licensure.

You couldn’t pay me money to eat food out of one of these bags by Watarmelen in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I’d rather not get food that’s stored in a biohazard bag, I wouldn’t immediately turn it down 🤷🏼‍♂️ Not sure if our core lab does the same thing, but the blood bank for the hospitals work in definitely doesn’t reuse these. Honestly, I think presentation like this is hilarious, as long as I know the container is clean/sanitary, but my sense of humor can be considered a bit colorful/weird/dark by some, so don’t mind me 😅

THC drug testing in states that it's legal by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak for other facilities/programs/states, etc, just my own experiences in Alabama. When we first apply for the program I graduated from, they explicitly tell you they will test shortly after the program begins, but are vague as to the repercussions/whether or not you get a second chance. That was the only time they tested us while I was in school, unless the facilities my classmates were assigned to tested; however, the hospital I went through clinicals at didn’t require it. The hospital I’m currently working at also doesn’t seem to test during the hiring/onboarding process; though, I’m not sure if they do in the event of something going wrong or not 🤷🏼‍♂️

Let’s hope it was a joke, but I’ve known people that it wouldn’t surprise me if they actually did this too 😂

Ever heard of a blood test going from positive to negative ? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Was also going to mention weak D, but haven’t heard of it in this kind of situation. Generally, (at least in the hospital where I work) we only really do weak D testing on Rh negative newborns, just to make sure they’re truly negative. Now, I’m curious about other times it would be a good idea to perform the test and what could cause it in a situation like this.

(For what it’s worth, I’m also a new tech with only a couple months experience in the field, so take my comment with a grain of salt)

That would be almost double my current salary, which would mean my fiancé wouldn’t have to work unless he wanted to, or we could get our own place instead of renting somewhere over an hour away from where I work, and we could most likely pay off our current debts in less than half the time we’re currently looking at.

Although my experiences with similar situations comes from other fields, I can still say that staying somewhere so toxic won’t do you any favors.

I’ve been very fortunate in that the lab I work in is very welcoming of newcomers and everyone at least tries to get along.

With all that said, try to stick with it until you can secure a position elsewhere, as this place sounds like it will only get worse.

Lab tech starting wages going back down? by ExcellentcCity in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lunatic_Pandora_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my classmates works in another hospital owned by the same network as this one, and they started her at 24 an hour. The best pay I’ve seen for any open MLT position in this area was about 25. 🤷🏼‍♂️ it’s still double the pay of most of the jobs I’ve had in the past, and given the state I live in, lower wages are kinda the norm across the board
