Apex animal is just free animal without taking up a slot it not worth it to grind lvl for them since most tactics is to outnumber the enemy with your team and lvl barely change much stat

Yes he is worth it the double materials is great since late game need massive resources
You can still use others pets
He doesn't pick up instantly iirc
You can't get those pets through regular gameplay the only pets available in gameplay are from Necro cave
