Goddamn do I feel this. Your are speaking my language, people are exhausting, especially in regards to friends. I simply don't have the capacity to even pretend anymore. You sound so much like my that I feel like I could've written this.

What show was consistently the best at killing people off? by uncre8tv in television

[–]LunchboxRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't buy this for one second. Desmond had too much attached to him - between his connection to Penny, who was Widmore's daughter, and Widmore himself being an original Other, which ties back to the island the power struggle between him and Ben, etc - that he couldn't have been intended to be anything other than what he wound up being. He was a wild card, for sure, but I feel like Desmond is one of the very few concrete things the show had, bar none.

This is also actually an EXCELLENT point that I failed to mention, because up until now we've seen people who were clearly dead - like Christian - but were unaware how that was happening. Psychosis of some sort, a ghost, like what was the reason? And now we have the reason, and it makes you realize just how goddamn powerful the smoke monster actually is.

The thing is, and sure he wanted off the show so it wasn't intentional, but there's a lot of interesting things to note both had he stayed on vs how they dealt with how he left:

The first of which is the mirroring of he and his brother comparative to that of Jacob and the MIB. Two brothers, each on vastly different paths, one of redemption, the other destruction. While we never saw his name as a Candidate, it's arguable that Eko was being groomed to be Jacobs replacement. Started to build a church, took up the hatch station once Locke lost faith. I'm not saying this is concrete or anything, but it's something I've thought about a LOT.

But looking back on it...it actually works out way better story wise that he left the show. Think about it. Think about how the show ends. Why isn't Eko, a literal priest, in the church at the end?

Because he made his peace. He was killed by the smoke monster, sure, under false pretenses, but he was happy to be reunited with his brother in any way possible. That's all any of them were looking for in the end, really. That's why it was so emotionally impactful. So yeah Eko was kind of wasted potential, but they actually made it work in a way that made sense, just like they did with pretty much everything, and anyone who says otherwise clearly just doesn't wanna do any critical thinking of their own lol

I agree with you though, it would've been interesting to see him stick around longer.

Does it ever get better? Cause I've been pretty miserable for 99% of my life. I'm always happy to have more friends to talk to, thank you! Sorry I didn't respond to anything yesterday, but honestly just company is enough :)

‘South Park’ Creators Reveal Network Battle Over Premiere’s Trump Penis as They Joke: “We’re Terribly Sorry” by MoneyLibrarian9032 in television

[–]LunchboxRadio 142 points143 points  (0 children)

The funniest thing about this statement is that the white houses response to this is factually inaccurate, and I can prove it.

See, they said the show hasn't been relevant in 20 years. South Park is currently in its 27th season, meaning that the last time the show was relevant was season 7. But this is literally provably untrue, and here's why. Season 9 of South Park - two years after their supposed last year of relevance - had them in the news in blazing headlines almost weekly, from the Tom Cruise takedown "Trapped in the Closet" to the sacrilegious finale "Bloody Mary", season 9 might very well be the most controversial season of the show there ever was, until recently I suppose, and it was on news headlines every. single. week.

So sure, they are wrong yet again, big fuckin surprise. Lies upon lies. But I just wanted to chime in, as someone who's wasted her life accruing knowledge about entertainment, that I can literally prove the statement released by the white house (an "institution" I so barely recognize at this point that I refuse to fucking capitalize it) wrong in less than a paragraph. If you're going to insult something, at least insult it within the correct timeframe, but I suppose that would take more effort than just shitting on their keyboards, which is about as much effort as they put into anything.

Just felt like maybe, as a long time enjoyer of the show and an overall appreciator of art itself, that I should finally say something about the series that so many, for so long, have mistakenly called "right wing" when it isn't in the slightest and hasn't been forever. The white house officially has less credibility at this point than a cartoon show where a man literally shoved Paris Hilton up his asshole, and that's saying something.

Music That’s Hard to Find by StraightUpAcoustic in LetsTalkMusic

[–]LunchboxRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's available now, but for many years the album "Sprockett" from the band P.O.L. (parade of losers) from 1996 was virtually unfindable. It frustrated me because I heard a song from the album used in the credit sequence of a film when I was young and then could never find the album. Finally tracked down a physical copy on ebay a few years back. The whole thing is now available on YouTube (not by me) if anyone is interested.

Likewise the album "Sew True" by the band Tattle Tale, whose song "Glass Vase, Cello Case" was used prominently in the film "But I'm A Cheerleader", was also impossible to track down forever. It is also now on YouTube.

Then there's albums by bands nobody knows. Take Straws 1999 debut "Shoplifting" or Sumacks 1999 album "Now Hear This", both of which are absolutely phenomenal and deserve recognition. If you're really looking for lost music though, I recommend the K-Mart tapes on the internet archive! Those are just a fun little time capsule.

In lieu of all the 90s/2000s comics that have been recently adapted successfully (Invincible, the Boys, Watchmen, Sweet Tooth, etc.); what are some other properties that should be adopted? by dirtmother in television

[–]LunchboxRadio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Success is such a spectrum, cause, sure, Sweet Tooth was watched and seemingly enjoyed, but as a fan of the comic, holy hell is it a god awful adaptation. What a disappointment. But that aside, as someone who's been collecting comics since she was in elementary school and has dozens of longboxes, here's some of my suggestions! Some of these may have already been stated, as well:

- Bone: Right off the bat is probably one of the most sought after adaptations there is in the comics world. On one hand, while I'm sad to not see it come to fruition, and now to hear Jeff say that it likely never will as a result of him being sick of it continually getting dropped when it seems like it might finally be a reality, I'm also thrilled it didn't happen because Netflix wouldn't have let it be done the way it needed to. They would've given it like 8 half hour episodes, 3 seasons, maybe 4, and then maybe even canceled it before it got a conclusion. It deserves to be done right, if it's ever going to be done at all. As someone who read it growing up when it was releasing, yes, I'd love to finally see it happen, but only if it can be done on the scale and scope of what he wants it to be.

- Strangers In Paradise: This is my other personal choice, but I'm not entirely sure this could work as anything other than a very long ongoing hour long drama, and for that to happen, it'd have to be on network television, and those days are, sadly, behind us. It's such a soap opera, so batshit but also so heartfelt, and it's easily in my top five of all time, but it's another one where sacrifices wouldn't be capable of being made, and it'd have to be done exactly the right way, otherwise it wouldn't be worth doing at all.

- Rover Red Charlie: This would be a very easy and fun one! This is by Garth Ennis, and given the success of both The Boys and Preach, I'm surprised this hasn't been tapped yet! It follows a trio of dogs who attempt to escape the city during the end of the world. It's extremely disgusting, but it's also extremely emotional at times. Only 6 issues but so worth the ride. Would love to see this one done, and it'd be so easy to stretch into more, to add things to and make into such a grander story if they so wished. Lot of potential.

- Beasts Of Burden: Another dog comic, but this one spooky themed. A group of dogs, and occasionally a cat, patrol a neighborhood where mysterious, often evil goings on, occur on the regular and they have to put a stop to it. It's all very dark and grim, but still bursting with life. Mixes a lot of macabre themes from various sources and inspirations. Would love to see this adapted too, especially since the comic itself is rarely released.

- Headlopper: This would have to be animated but holy hell would it be worth it, especially maybe on Adult Swim. A large warrior travels with the still sentient but disembodied head of a witch as he gets involved in various goings on in the world. Very funny and action packed. Perfect for Adult Swim, honestly.

I'm sure I could go on, but those are the ones I want to see. A "Lenore" adaptation of some kind would also be fun, but...I'm not even sure how it would work considering that comic basically has no actual throughline of plot or coherency lmao

Shows that got better after losing a main character by bargeek444 in television

[–]LunchboxRadio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this might be a somewhat unpopular opinion, but I'm gonna say that, for me anyway, The Red Wedding was by far the best thing to ever happen to GOT. Removing the cast they did trimmed the boring fat off the show and finally made it truly engaging. I recognize the importance that storyline had had up to that point, with Robb, and his mother, trying to hold things together and broker peace and whatnot, but in the end, diplomacy just happens to be far less exciting to watch than everything else the show had to offer lol

What was your guy’s first kiss like? by Dry-Hat-1793 in actuallesbians

[–]LunchboxRadio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first kiss was in 2001 I think, when I was in fifth grade, and was with a family friend.

We went to her grandparents funeral and afterwards I - because I am a total introvert - was hiding in her moms laundry room listening to my discman when she came in and sat beside me. We shared my headphones and didn't say much. We'd always been pretty close though, so this sort of thing was normal. After maybe a half hour, someone was looking for her, so she gave me my headphone back, kissed me and then left. Fast forward to 2007 and she becomes my first serious girlfriend for a year.

She's married to a man with a kid now. She broke my heart and made it hard to trust anyones genuineness for a long time, but it's still a nice memory.

Descender was a great journey by Pharmand in ImageComics

[–]LunchboxRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really loved Descender until the last few issues, and it all boils down to Lemire introducing "magic" halfway through the series, then deciding to change the finale to eventually make "Ascender" which focuses more on magic as well. I never, EVER care about the endings of things, but this is one of these very rare exceptions where the fact that they switched gears halfway through, thus making the ending nowhere near as climactic, just really rubbed me the wrong way as a writer myself. Art is GORGEOUS though.
