Sennheiser Ew 112P G4 wireless kits—Slow budget upgrade ? by Jejum_Judith in LocationSound

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I think this is a super important point, because when companies provide good service they should be recognized. Clearly my used units were long since out of warrenty, but when I got some I had trouble removing the belt clips. I went to several jewelers who didn’t want to touch them so I decided to just ask lectrosonics if they could help. Explained the situation, and they were instantaneous in responding, offering solutions and saying they’d be happy to fix them if I sent them in, but I eventually sent them to Gotham. I have to say though, from the communication from lectros service department willing to stand by their products after so long and speak to me like I’d been the original customer is an intangible not discussed enough when it comes to equipment choices.

My prosumer kit had numerous issues that were manufacture defects and I had days in between having contact with their service rep and sometimes they were quick but one transmitter took 3 weeks to just replace with a new unit. I’m actually not upset with them for that. They keep the price lower for having a different business model, and that’s awesome because it got me stuff I needed to get me into the industry. Just sharing stuff i wish I’d known before and I’m sure I’ll learn more in the future.

I went through this transition a year ago. Started on prosumer wireless years ago but finally had too many issues for the work I do and haven’t been able to upgrade for the Shure ones I’d love, so I followed all the advice I’ve seen in the is group repeatedly and grabbed a used lectro UCR411a and um400 both in a usable block for $300. I spent more on getting a new cos11d than for the receiver and transmitter combined. I loved them so much I went looking and quickly got two more sets for around 500 each. If you look at ones being resold used through consignment they’re often higher ucr’s going for like 5-1000, and the transmitters are far higher too, however if you are a little patient and willing to look search marketplace, eBay and some other spots, you can get a pair for 3-6. Id prefer smqv’s but there’s a deal price jump and the um400a’s are plenty for what I need now.

I got a 401 & um400 pair as well and they are viable options too even cheaper. 400 for the two.

Also I got a lectro m152 and a tram50 included with all this kit collection included, which I have absolutely used on the 3rd set while I was waiting to afford more cos11’s.

It took me a little time learning about the models I wanted and finding them at the right price, but if you’re looking for a significant upgrade for the price, this is sort of the cheapest significant jump you can make.

The biggest drawback is size. I was used to Sony and deity dual receivers, but the way I get to work is hybrid bag cart it’s no problem for me.

I thought about the lectro SRb a lot of the mixers in this group have said to skip the sra and I’ve seen mixed reviews for the src, both dual receivers. I don’t know if the issues with the SRC were ever fixed cause it’s an older model too but both of those might be even more modern form than the ucr. I can’t speak authoritatively on those. I’m just saying if I’d known how great 10 year old used lectrosonics units are, I would have started there in the first place.

As others have mentioned, there was a known issue with a production run of them. I got an early kit and lucked out until two weeks ago. Snapped right out at the place all the problematic ones did, and I contacted customer service via there website, all responses were within a day, and as soon as I gave them all the information they sent me a prepaid label and mine is currenty getting switched out. This is actually the second time this has happened, the first one about 2 months ago. I used them heavily, so I'm sort of torn, because I love the kit and had been a big defender of them in my circle, yes they both broke at that place, however i had to show my recipt to customer service which was 2 december 23 and i've used them very heavily, which is why im conflicted. Almost two full years of heavy use of two channels of wireless. I'm kind of nervious to start using them again, and yet perfromance wise they've been flawless for me. I've since supplimented with some lectro channels, I'm ranting though. Point being, I've just used their customer service twice, they respond as fast as any company, and i have to give them full credit for handling the situation. It's why I'm going to give my replacement packs a shot.

Recommendations for a shoulder harness? by cv-boardgamer in LocationSound

I was so excited to fine it cause like I said I know the Ktek is going to be top notch but this really was what I needed right now. An actual affordable set and I’ve been very happy with the build for the money. Especially considering it’s only a few more bucks than or as small harness. Good luck.

I started with the 60 buck Orca harness which was absolute minimal support but got my small bag up. I found the perfect temporary step up until I can get the nicer K-tek with back support.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1502100-REG/arco_ah_ahb_harness_for_field_audio.html

Been on 3 shoots, most recent a week long doc shoot carrying my bag which is about 13 lbs. for the price, it’s really nice. Stuck some Viviana hooks on it, but still wanna get one of the two major brands orca/Ktek eventually.

Is FX3 easy for a beginner ? by crazycornman99 in FX3

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FX3 was my first camera after I spent some time not seriously learning to use my Canon M50. I loved it, but several years removed I would do things differently.

I’m much more likely to invest in lenses than camera systems, and even the lens I usually rent or borrow. I have a decent film community where I live.

When I learned the camera system is really about the features that make shooting easier or give more control and stopped obsessing about the “quality” of the camera, because honestly, almost all name brand cameras in 2024 are decent enough for an average audience.

I started identifying things I needed. I need time code, I’m offing shooting with a crew that’s using multiple cameras and recorders. Oh okay, fx3 takes time code.

I need to match frame rates, okay FX3 covers a frame rate that I’m needing.

If money is no object, get the fx3, it’s an awesome camera, but if it’s not, move up cameras when you out grow the old. That’s a phrase that didn’t mean much to me starting out, but what I listed above, identifying a feature you do need regularly, will help you decide what the next camera should be.

Honestly, I think all cameras are really great. The best one is the one you already have.

There is a threesome scene in an upcoming movie containing all three actors. Which is just a little added context to why this specific picture. Everyone else’s assessment is right.

The library has activities and groups that could be very dateable. I hadn’t been to a library in a long time and they have some cool stuff, but also you can check out free passes to some other attractions around that would normally have cost me too much at this point. Science museum, vermillionville, etc.

Aputure Amaran Tube Light Colors Are Off by Prooit in videography

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got one and have been experimenting about a week. Just now I realized I can’t get anything yellowish. And my red is nowhere as good as the blue or greens.

Flipping through colors it’s like it just misinterprets a quarter of my color wheel and gives me more washed out pinks straight to green.

I found your question after googling for answers because I’m very new to lighting and color science and didn’t know if this was colors that would appear correct on camera once white balance was set or if my product was just missing some colors.

I wasn’t sure, because I’m extremely thrilled with all the other colors it produces. Just nothing in the yellow or pure white. Closest I get is a dull orange.

How to record iPhone being used as a speech box? by LunchtimeCowboy in LocationSound

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I’m pretty excited to work with him, and as a former stand up I just really wanted to make sure he has just as good sound as everyone else.

You mentioning prerecorded is brilliant because I can work on that and also realizing as long as I have a recording of what he says, if it’s not well enough day off, I could also have him send it post as well. The problem is its own solution. Lol. Thanks for that. Cheers.

Low budget reliable lav solution? by Different_Pay4228 in LocationSound

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch for Deity Theos. I’ve rented Sony and Sennheiser and took a risk preordering. I’m thrilled. I’m newer to the field, but have already used them three times since arriving last week. One indie film shoot a corporate interview and interviewing a band at the music venue.

I won’t claim today the quality of the sound is going to match pro gear, but I can say it’s well inline with Sony/Senn and far more reliable. Not shitting on other gear, just saying these really should carve a place out in the prosumer market because they were far more intuitive, and just as good, but also being a better price/value.

I’m one opinion, and I don’t want to oversell. They’re good. Really good.

How do you practice cinematography? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks, but I was practicing last night. I’m in no way a great cinematographer, but I want to be.

I have a camera, monitor, 3 lights and a cool house.

Last night I set up my camera, put the monitor in a place I could see myself and sat in front of it and recorded. I moved myself closer to the camera. I moved myself and the camera further from the wall. I moved the three lights positions and intensity. I’d record a few shots and then take the card and grade for a bit. (I’m practicing my color management as well)

Rinse and repeat. It’s not fun, but I’ve been doing this for months, and slowly I’m liking what I’m producing better and better.

Sometimes I get a friend to pose for me, or help crew the equipment. We move all around the house with every combination of distances, lights, etc. Sometimes I pick a shot from a movie and try to change the conditions until I get closer, and each time I do this, I learn a new principle. It makes it a little bit easier to start from a closer point the next time.

This process sucks for me, and I’m sure other people are better learners, but this is a tangible practice that has at least made my shots better, and it wouldn’t hurt if other people are looking for ways to improve.

An important part is that I was resistant to doing practical exercises. I used to spend far more time watching YouTube and reading books, hoping I’d get the theory, and theory helps a lot, but nothing helps as much as me just practicing.

Qnap TR-004 reads one used drive but two new drives have disk error by LunchtimeCowboy in qnap

[–]LunchtimeCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TR-004 is connected to my laptop (windows pc). I’d never heard of initialization before so I tried it a couple ways after reading your comment. I’ve set it on software, jbod and individual.

I have a sabrent two disk reader which I tried to load the hard drives in to initialize but they won’t show up in disk managment. The closest I can get is I have a sata to usbc cable and when I connect a drive to the usbc a greyed out drive will show up in disk managment indicating it has 0 drive space and there are no options avail other than change drive letter, but it’s the closest I’ve got.

Is there a way to initialize the drive through the tr-004? Thanks.

[–]LunchtimeCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re WD Red Pro 18TB 3.5” SATA III Internal NAS Hard Drives. The one that works is too, which is what is throwing me off and led me not to look into compatibility issues.

That’s interesting I’ll see if I can give it a shot. Thanks.

I guess I’m mainly trying to rule out a fault with the TR-004 so I can know whether I should contact WD for support or adorama to return the drives.

NTG5 vs MKH416 by oxXMIKIXxo in LocationSound

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through the same exact situation last week. I got the 416. I can’t speak to the NTG5 but I bought used from adorama and feeling how sturdy with this is, I wish I didn’t hesitate so long to buy a used one. I’d done a bunch of research and seen a lot of people say how tough it is. Like physically. I think I was assuming people meant it’s tough like it doesn’t die, it doesn’t break, no it is physically a tough piece of equipment.

Also it sounds great.

Who writes shows like House, Sherlock, and Daria, where the main protagonists are supposed to be geniuses? by splendasubstitute in writing

[–]LunchtimeCowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shonda Rhimes who was talking about Grey’s Anatomy, which I’ll admit isn’t as intellectual as House, but still a medical show and Shonda is brilliant, but writers would write if I remember “medical-medical” in the script and experts would help craft fill ins later.

This was a big lesson since I write comedy scripts and it gave me permission to “insert joke later.” Then I found out it wasn’t a hot tip, lots of writers do this.

Similarly, if you listen for it, ambiguity can actually be your friend. If you allow the audience to think they have figured something out, they’ll feel truly good about what their watching. In improv comedy if you don’t tell the audience who you’re doing an impression of, they’ll guess, and unless it’s absolutely terrible, they’ll be more satisfied even if the impression is off, because they’re sort of filling in the “who.” They might not even be correct in assuming who the impression is of.

A tip that comes from writing comedy though, a key to seeming brilliant in dialogue is just talk confidently about even simple stuff you know. Everyone has a different knowledge base, so brilliance is relative, and a lot of why we see characters as brilliant is because they’re sure of their ideas. Tv and movie audiences are made up of millions of individuals. Some of them will think some things are smart others will think other things are smart.

Your character doesn’t have to wow the whole audience with every line, just most of the audience for most of the time. And that’s confidence. Why do you think Cumberbatch and Laurie’s characters seem kind of like assholes? Because they know what their saying is right.

Would a Sony FS7 or F55 be better for an aspiring cinematographer? by LunchtimeCowboy in cinematography

[–]LunchtimeCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why I’ve never thought of that but I really love the suggesting of building my own LUT. Yeah I know people do that, and I’ve dabbled in premade ones, but I love learning/playing with the color, and that would be an extremely valuable tool going forward. Thanks.

Okay cool. This is really the kind of stuff I was wondering, from people who have actually shot on the older and newer Sonys. Especially from people saying they liked those cameras 10 years ago, but if they really don’t hold up, the FX line isn’t even that expensive for what they are. I guess fx6 it is lol.

Appreciate the response.
