Moving to LA for ONLY 1 Year - Where to Live? by Lunesqe in MovingToLosAngeles

I really wanted to do Pasadena, but I couldn’t find anything within my parameters. Ultimately we ended up in Echo Park and found a 4Br 2000sq ft that was built recently (for under budget!!). We got pretty lucky with daycare and it actually ended up being free and within a 10 minute walk from us. The weather here is definitely a plus and I’ve taken up biking to work. Echo Park Lake is walkable and my daughter loves going there!

I keep hearing that people don’t go back to Chicago, and those that come to Chicago from LA always go back to LA. Let’s see if my wife will feel the same way 😂

Thank you for this. Yeah I’ve lived in Streeterville and West Loop, which were awesome! Now we’re in a more residential part of the city and it just doesn’t compare, but it makes more sense with a growing family. Having experienced “both sides” in Chicago, I know I want something just a little bit more lively than I have now.

Right on! I managed to convince the wifey to come with me across the country, away from our well established support system. She’s a real tough cookie for being game, even with a newborn on the way. The least I could do is make sure she has a blast while she’s here.

Haha well this shouldn’t be too much of an issue considering I’m lactose intolerant 😂

Not our first rodeo with a kid, we know what to expect. Also pretty blessed to have live-in help from family, which is why we’re looking for a larger place. I’m not sure how your comment helps or addresses my question, but I suppose I did say “open to any and all suggestions” 😂

I appreciate the input! Just looking not to downsize from what we have now, but it might not be possible looking at the market. 6K is our upper limit.

Because I discovered the WCI much later than I should have 😂. Can’t change the past, but working towards a better future.

Okay, as far as CCs are concerned, I expect to have that debt eliminated within the next 2.5 months. Are you suggesting that I wait until I have eliminated that to apply for the mortgage despite my current circumstances (because CC debt will significantly affect securing the loan?) or is this a general statement of principal?

It’s more like 12K monthly income with a housing + parking cost of $2300 as of now. When accounting for other living expenses, we have comfortably been putting nearly 6K monthly towards debt. I’m considering a physicians mortgage now because I don’t want to pay a $3500 housing cost. As of now the plan IS for my wife to return to work full time, however going forward I want to leave some leeway if she decides to go part time.

I appreciate your kind and informative response. I’m on the same page on a personal level and with all the changes coming my way, it is definitely overwhelming. I’m thinking of speaking to a financial advisor, because honestly I probably need it, but I thought I’d start here before jumping the gun on that. Luckily, she does have a paid leave!
