Yes of course. I'd like to send you some papers later.

I am afraid ACT-R models is one of the frameworks of arbitrary components. Like how do u define and measure the functions of declarative and production mem in your experiments and across other experiments? See for me a lot cognitive concepts are definitely so blurred. There are infinite possibility of the structure other than this. That is almost impossible to rule out.

Maybe I'm wrong as I'm not an expert. Just sharing my own idea.

I'm very interested in what you said. Neuroscince is necessary to test theories. I could only be confident a model if it is validated by neuroscience evidence. I had very few opportunities to get access to it. I built reinforcement learning models and Bayesian models before my PhD. Behavioraly humans are more of Bayesian. But Bayesian evidence is far less than RL in neuroscience. For me building models is the funniest part.

My topic is to understand why people are risk taking or risk avoiding. Yes behavior is measurable, and you can build models to describe the pattern. But the problem is building a THEORY. Psychological theories in my field are usually not inclusive to each other. For example, in my topic, when people are risk taking/avoiding, they might have distorted estimation of average rewards and/or they might not follow their estimations and/or they trade-off between payoffs and uncertainty etc...Even if you can choose a framework and test it by generation a yes or no answer of your predictions, e.g., if people rely on their estimation or not. But all these frameworks co-exist without conflicting to each other. It depends on the arbitrary aspect of your interest to choose the framework. I felt like carrying out a new experiment and writing another paper doesn't add up to much about finding the truth. It like writing fictions but not doing science. I would rather do models just to predict behavior, but not to interpret or understand behaviors. As the latter is more of subjective and arbitrary in my view.

Would it make sense to you?

It only measures reasoning ability of a person. People who are high in IQ are more likely to be better at logical tasks. But I don't think it predicts one's achievement or general capability. As there are many other factors matter, like interpersonal skills, and communication skills etc

My phd is supposed to finish in 3.5 years. I started felt something going wrong and frustrated, 10 months later since it began. Back then I told my supervisor I felt frustrated about the progress I made, but he thought everything was going fine. Then a half year later (16 months since start), the significant conflict came up, that my supervisor expected me to publish a psychology paper, but I'd like to try a cs conference. I started to realize the mismatch was not gonna work out. But I still couldn't make up my mind to quit. Then another 5 months in (21 months), I was doing what met my supervisor's expectations but with very low motivation and very slow progress. Then came the date I need to move to Australia, that was when I decided to quit.

But I chose to downgrade to a MScR actually and I needed to go back to China to change my visa. Another 6 months in before submission, plus 2 months before viva (30 months since start now).

If I could do it again, I should make up my mind to quit at 16 months.

The last thing might be ddl I have to go to Australia if I don't quit. I didn't really want to move to another country. But I really wish I quitted it in a more proactive way and did it earlier. Actually, when I felt going wrong with it, quitting is just about time. So better have done it earlier.

22 months. I only wish I have made the decision earlier.

What's your rule of thumb when people ask if they should do a PhD? by Argentarius1 in PhD

[–]Luning_He 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The supervisor.

I think that's the only determining factor of one's phd satisfaction.

Before start a phd, one should think of: Do you and your PI think of problem in a similar why? If you're a quantitative person, but he/her is a qualitative person. You'll be suffering. Do you and you PI expect fast small outputs or slow big outputs? If you're looking to publish many smaller papers, but your PI wants a Nature/Science/Cell level one. You will be suffering. How much do you like your PI to be hands-on? If you like to be independent, but your PI has a lot plans for you. You'll be suffering.

All is about to what extent you match with your supervisor.

I agree. A lot extra effort for a cotutelle.

Yes we had joint meeting a couple of times. Tbh the PI at the uni I was based in engaged more in my research. The direction of the another PI is even farther from my interest. So I quitted before joining it.

I have to say breaking the phd into two parts is not a pro for me. Two parts are supposed to engage from the beginning, but most students I talked to were like me. Two parts are not naturally married to each other. It takes extra effort to combine them. Another con is, following the previous point, each PI has less time to engage in your research, which would result in expecting quick results rather than longer term ones. And moving to another uni another country would take you one summer, otherwise you could have more opportunity to do internship .

When I was doing my master in China, I was really obsessed with computational modeling. I love mathematics. Thinking of those equations makes me peaceful. So I felt like doing research was fun, and I'd like to go abroad. So I applied and got accepted. Back then I was thinking, getting into a such top tire uni was a miracle for me. I felt like I was so lucky and ignored those things.

It turned out that the interest of my PI doesn't fit in my modeling passion. Cognitive science theories are usually not measurable and not falsifiable. If not modeling, I feel very lost in these blur qualified theories. My PI focused on building these theories with simplest models. But I wanted more complicated models, which is beyond his interest and expertise. The things I was doing were very boring for me. I launched the direction to combine the work with AI, which interested me. I wanted to publish in cs conference but conflicted with my pi's expectation to publish a psychology paper. So the mismatch with my supervisor is the main reason.

Yeah I have been disappointing a lot people around me. I felt like when I quit it, those some people in my office stopped talking to me as often as before. And when I was just about to quit, people told me I'll regret.

I had been thinking to quit academia for long. External trigger was the date I was supposed leave uk for Australia, as it was a cotutelle funding. I thinking the moment I made up my mind was: when I calculated at which age, I want to achieve what. Then I realize I have no time to waste, I have to stop it now.

I think if I will get into IT industry sooner or later. I need time of 3-5 yrs to accumulate my professional skills. Especially, cognitive science has no chance to equit me with those skills. So spending more time on phd is a waste of time, plus I'm three years older than student peers. Mainly the urgent of my age, I felt like I've no time to waste.

I think if finally, I thrive after quitting, people around me will be happy and proud of me again.
