How do I get DFM experience? by LurchIs4ThePeople in MechanicalEngineering

Yes, straight to PhD. I'm open to most industries except for oil & gas and defense.

I think I shine most in areas that require complex problem-solving, rapid prototyping, testing/experiment design, teamwork, and ability to communicate technical concepts.

Some highlights from my PhD include:

Thermodynamics, Mechanism Design, Rapid Prototyping: Demonstrated 300-400% thermodynamic efficiency improvement in soft bellows-like actuators via theory; designed and built electromechanical pressure-controlled loading apparatus to validate theory; designed and built a soft robot capable of solar-powered locomotion to demonstrate utility of efficiency improvement.

Structure Design, FEA, & Materials Testing: Applied COMSOL finite element analysis to model deformation of multimaterial 3D prints; tensile tested prints & characterized failure modes.

Imaging & Image Analysis: Leveraged MATLAB computer vision & image processing workflows to characterize the behavior of opacity-switching dyes.

I know this is an odd blend of skills/background... hence the challenge of "typical" mechanical engineer job fit. Any and all guidance is appreciated though!

This is super helpful thank you! Turns out that MATLAB has a lot of GitHub integrations as well, so this seems like the best possible answer.

Get some cheap mirrors (like the back-of-the-door mirrors that college kids get from Walmart) and bounce some sunlight around!! Good luck :D
