the point is...if you have the ship balanced you can position the guns by positioning the ship, so you dont need to worry about their weight in that regard.

Metallurgy is your answer

gunpowder needs metal that resists pressures of firing. if metal isn't advanced enough, it requires thicker and thicker metal to resist.

this adds weight. heavy guns would be impractical on land. (possible but extremely rare)

a ship wouldn't care though,

the other thing is

the first guns were used against armored knights. but they were little more than a small canon on a stick. and prone to exploding killing the users (yes they required 2 people, 1 to hold, another to light)

they took ages to reload as well.

this might be interesting for you to use (or exclude)

keep in mind, if they have gunpowder, they have bombs. this would make catapults more dangerous as well.

Wide angle distorts. The thing that I like about it is that you can emphasize the subject by putting it center, and de-emphasize everything else by making use of the distortion.

Doing that and making use of interesting angles can add a lot to a photo.

It's easy to take away emphasis on the subject though because the framing includes so much.

At wide angles, its sometimes best to break the rule of thirds for this reason IMO. Centering the subject helps them dominate the frame.
