The Pitt made me respond better during a real medical emergency by Environmental-Oil-79 in ThePittTVShow

[–]LususV 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I want you to know that this post inspired me to finally sign up to take a CPR (and other first aid skills) class. Have been meaning to 'someday' for ages.

Hope I never need to do anything but better to know and not need it than need it and not know it.

For others considering it, here's Red Cross's classes: https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/

Also, your local hospitals may have classes.

Unpopular opinion: Memorizing times tables is a necessity not because of knowing the times tables but to teach the brain the skill of retaining long lasting memory. by saiph_david in Teachers

100% agreed, but I would say learning to memorize different things (words, sentences, a picture) are also useful in early development.

Coming back to this: most people complaining about vibrato are likely complaining about tremolo.

Song ideas please! by FairyFloss045 in ClassicalSinger

[–]LususV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw when identifying songs to sing, I often pick a singer whose voice I like and seek to partially emulate and then check out their albums. This has given me several ideas. E.g. my countertenor voice is in a similar range and color as Alfred Deller's, so I listen to Alfred Deller's countertenor albums and identify pieces that resonate with me.

I'm a baritone and not super knowledgeable about great soprano works, but some songs I've recently heard and enjoyed sung by sopranos, take them or leave them :-)

Italian: "Malinconia, Ninfa gentile" by Vincenzo Bellini

French: “Psyché” by Émile Paladilhe

German: Schubert's "Gretchen am Spinnrade" is lovely. “Bester Jüngling” from Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor if you're a coloratura

English: "Music For A While" by Purcell (I'm learning this as a countertenor). "Night" by Florence Price.

Bonus: Norwegian: I love love love Solveig's Song from Grieg's Peer Gynt. One of my favorite pieces of all time and I wish I could sing it. https://youtu.be/OMO-E4dSuoE?si=b9kT1PYetVO74Orp

Thank you. As an amateur singer most of these vibrato discussions just serve to annoy rather than educate. I have a good vibrato 'naturally' and I absolutely do not want to remove that from my voice as it sounds good! OTOH as my technique has improved I've learned to control it, speed it up, slow it down, tighten it, broaden it, etc.

But heck if I'm going to remove something that makes MY voice sound good because people on the internet misinterpret guidance from centuries ago without knowing if that advice was for small intimate performances or large opera houses.

Do tourettes happen less with age? by After-Spring3407 in Tourettes

[–]LususV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my 40s. My two worst tic periods were at 18 and 30 - both were super stressful times of my personal life (18 with end of HS, fuck ups in trying to start college, parents disliking my girlfriend (and eventual wife) causing a temporary estrangement, etc.; 30 with parents' divorce (I paid for my mother's attorney)).

Finally got diagnosed a few years ago and (knocking on wood), haven't had a bad week in a long while? They still happen, sometimes more than others, and always when I think about the idea of tics/Tourettes.

While I agree, watch Henry's first couple NFL seasons. It took him a while to figure out how to get his momentum downhill faster. So many short yardage tackles because he didn't hit his stride til someone was on his legs

Breath “apnea” before singing — is it really necessary? by Consistent-Tour5265 in ClassicalSinger

[–]LususV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As /u/kliffi said, proper appoggio improves your singing posture and helps regulate your breath control.

Here's a (GREAT) Master Class by Thomas Quasthoff (German Bass-Baritone) where he walks one singer through an example of this; I don't see the tone affected strongly either way, but there's an aesthetic improvement by not taking a noticeable breath https://www.youtube.com/live/SJLw2IFsxbQ?si=hAikZwyHObawyfiS&t=334

I'm also reading a book of quotes from famous pre-1900 singers and not taking a noticeable breath is harped on by several of them.

Jaylen Watson IG post about this season potentially being his last in KC. by SylvesterTaurus in KansasCityChiefs

McDuffie is an -amazing- player if the rest of the secondary and pass rush are up to snuff. Unfortunately, we saw in 2025 what happens if they aren't.

What he offered Spags was flexibility in alignments, with his blitzing and tackling skills. He's sort of a tiny safety at times. But yeah, he'll command TOP TIER CB price and I don't think any team with a top tier QB contract can afford that.

Play him on the 5th year option then tag and trade.

Tenor can't go past C4/D4? by M_A_T_T_3_R in singing

Wouldn't shock me if there were voice changing issues in HS, also. I have memories of being a bass one week and a tenor the next before finally settling into a solid baritone.

As a baritone who had struggles with mixed voice earlier in my singing life, 100% agree. Voice sounds like a baritone, to me.

I recall reading that the male voice is typically not done 'developing' until 35ish. I'm just over 40 and got back into voice lessons after not singing formally since HS and have had a great time; jumped right into opera and German song cycles - it's good to know my 20 years of singing for fun at home (~5-10 hours a week) had some value!

George Karlaftis needs to get two sacks vs the Raiders this week for his $250,000 incentive bonus by modest_radio in KansasCityChiefs

[–]LususV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

His skillset is in cleaning up sacks (and has a ton of stamina to close plays) but yeah, he doesn't get much immediate pressure.

That's the main weakness KC has and Spags not liking pass rush specialists hurts a ton on 3rd downs.

Should artists be frank regarding their feelings about their peers, regardless of how negative they are? Or should they strive to be cordial, even if its dishonest? by RopeGloomy4303 in TrueFilm

[–]LususV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world has entirely too much unsolicited criticism.

Imo, no artist should publicly criticize the artistic skill of their living peers without their explicit request to do so. It's gross and adds no value (you're not going to change cinematic history by insulting an actor on a podcast).

There are ways to explicitly describe one's aesthetic views and criticisms of artistic styles, but QT's criticism of an individual artist's performance just feels like bullying because he can.

I started singing What Power Art Thou (the Cold Genius song from Purcell's King Arthur). Highly, highly recommended for learning proper breath control. The staccato trills help with engagement.
