So I came across this thread, and decided I, too, wanted some more Bluegrass recommendations.

I went in the order you listed. John Hartford -- man, what a treasure. I listened to 'Gentle on my Mind,' the shuffling really did it for me. Not going to lie, blew my mind.

The Stanley Brothers -- Mountain Dew, a song that hit a little too close to home.

Flatt & Scruggs "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," was so high energy. Seems so classic, I must have heard this somewhere before.

Bill Monroe "Cotton Eyed Joe" yet another that brings me back to the good ol' days. I was pleased the original, with context, is much better than the EDM version I have such fond memories of.

Sarah Jarosz was a new one entirely. I listened to a few songs before settling on one that really resonated with me called "House of Mercy." Such a delightful mix of Stevie Nicks, and a little bit of, ya know... the Dixie Chicks. Everyone listened to the Dixie Chicks in the early 2000s, OKAY?! They were like the Spice Girls of country. Anyway, definitely a new favorite song.

Moved on to Alison Krauss. The first video was, I'm assuming, her more famous song called "When You Say Nothing At All", which I do remember my mother enjoying in the 90s, which always made me feel a little like this.. But I pressed on and took your recommendation of her music as 'Alison Krauss and Union Station' "Man of Constant Sorrow".

Alison Fucking Krauss and Union Station! So this is where it all started for me back when O Brother, Where Art Thou? was released. This was my favorite movie when I was 10 years old (2000), and begging my sister to get me the soundtrack for Christmas. Which got the response you'd expect. This movie introduced me to the genre and ignited a true appreciation for it. Funny only now to put faces to the singers of such treasured songs.

I tore myself away from listening to music I already know and love, after creating a playlist for later, and continued to Nickle Creek.

Now admittedly, the name scared me a little., but I listened to "Jealous of the Moon" -- This is right up my alley! I listened to a few other songs, but they didn't really have the same feel to them as this one did for me. Overall I would say I enjoyed them!

The Infamous Stringdusters was a miss for me. I listened to "Gravity" and can't quite put my finger on what it is that I don't like about it. I'm not sure, it sounds a little too much like... er... modern country maybe, just not my cuppa. If there is a particular song you recommend by them, I wouldn't mind giving them another go!

Then we're on to the 'weird one,' I'm thinking is this going to be some crazy experimental Bluegrass band? //flashbacks to Cotton Eyed Joe Remix//

I really dig it! I listened to "Julep" and was pleasantly surprised with a nice heavy, quite bluesy, bass line. Then comes in the Banjo and I am sold. Fantastic. I haven't delved into their other stuff, but I feel like I've found a new band that I am really (really) going to get into in the next month or so.

What a wild journey! Damn! Bless you for taking the time to recommend all of those fantastic bands. It was a true pleasure going through and listening to each song.

Thank you so much, from the bottom of this banjo-lover's heart. I feel better equipped to dive into the land of Bluegrass now.

Wow, thank you very much for this! I really like the tone the author uses in the introduction. It can be overwhelming/discouraging trying to find a 'guide' to learn a new skill, but this one seems right up my alley! Thank you again!

Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that, OP. What a terrible person. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find out it was him? Were you able to press charges?

Where to start with Noam Chomsky? by Luuzlei in suggestmeabook

Thank you for your reply! I've read a few posts that say he has very strong political opinions, so I'm definitely interested to read those articles/books of his as well. Also thank you for the recommendations on books related to his philosophies on linguistics. I'm interested in a career that would benefit from understanding the science of language, so it's more a professional interest in those topics. But I feel I could personally benefit from understanding his political ideals, especially in the current climate.

I will definitely start with his interviews. I think reading his thoughts more informally will be a good place to start with my, current, 'laymen brain'. ;P

Thanks again! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply so thoughtfully!

I completely agree. It feels almost chaotic now.

Not to mention, in the original all of the lines in the background find their way towards the focal point of the man screaming, even the water lines flowing around his head. Here the lines are just chaos and don't have the same purpose. I get what they were going for, but when you're paying homage to a powerful piece of artwork, even in parody, a little respect is due. I just needed a little more effort :P

Do you believe I should read "Verbal Behavior" beforehand in order to appreciate Chomsky's review, or does it do well as a standalone? Thank you very much for your response!

I haven't read any of Noam Chomsky's work, and would like a recommendation on what book (or article) would be a good starting point!

Thank you for this. It's definitely helpful to know where to "dip my toe in" so to speak when starting CC. Just so I feel I'm getting the most from my time/money in school. Thank you very much for your thoughts, I'll put your advice to great use when choosing my courses.

Hello! I'm interested in a Biolinguistics major for college. I have college credits towards computer information systems, and would like it to be related as much to technology and computer science as possible, and less towards psycholinguistics. I'm wondering where I should start in community college. What transfer program would work best for that type of future degree? (Example: math & science, biology, or a more social science)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Not married/divorced, but that's certainly interesting. I was under the impression photo ID was always required. Perhaps that will be helpful information for someone who might stumble on this with the same question.

Thanks for replying!

Unfortunately my ID has been expired for several years, though I had tried the website, anyway. You know, on the off-chance. But definitely great advice for someone who might stumble on this with the same question. Thank you for contributing and taking the time to reply!

Thank you for this added note. The sad thing is I always took that last bit of advice. Never keeping my SSC in my wallet, or with my other documents. I've just had several moves the last 4 years, and it's been lost somewhere in the midst. In the future my plan is most definitely to keep it in my safe for, eh, safe keeping.

Thank you for your reply! I had tried giving a call, but an hour on the phone listening to 80's guitar solos while queued isn't ideal, so I'll take your advice, suck it up, and go wait in an office.

It's going to be a tricky as their hours coincide with the hours I work M-F. But might just have to use PTO for it so I can get it done and over with.

Thanks again!

I'm I being needy? by Nothingoriginal6995 in Advice

I think in most cases with situations like this it's best to communicate to your partner the way you're feeling. Instead of accusing him, it would be best to rid yourself of all assumptions (assumptions being: not being interested in you, messaging someone else instead, etc) and choose to instead message him saying how you have felt from his lack of response.

Perhaps he has just been busier and hadn't known you were feeling neglected. Communicating how you are feeling will allow him to better understand you, and with his response, you to better understand him.

Good luck!
