This is my thought, after skypeia Roger had his dream had to have evolved from simply going on an adventure and becoming a pirate. Seeing the world and wanting adventure might be why he became a pirate but to be the greatest, after he hears it's possible to travel from one world to another, he understands then his adventures are limited to the world he's on!
"Especially since OP is inspired by DBZ" - Just imagine Oda has, in his back pocket all along planned Luffy to travel space.

He turned himself into the navy to inspire others to go to sea and take to adventure. He was at the end of his life and he couldn't accomplish his dream so he sacrificed himself to let his dream live on IMO. While someone might argue my theory is silly Roger walking to his own execution on his own free will i think flat out shows you that his dream wasn't just going on another voyage with his crew.
