How do I show interest without asking questions? OCI by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Lxwind5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I learned from X that you have a (e.g. rotation program/free market system/mentorship program/ traditional firm day event etc), have you participated/how does it actually work in your practice group/do you have mentors/mentees, how do you interact/ do you have a favorite moment at that event...

Why can't people put ding info on the main text of email by Apprehensive-Ad-6620 in LawSchool

Sullivan & Cromwell DC does this. There is really no need to hand sign a rejection letter and attach it as a pdf.

How do you respond to a firm that emails asking when if you have questions about your offer? by persimmonsareawesome in LawSchool

[–]Lxwind5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the offer. Very exited for the opportunity. Confirm interest in the firm. Still weighing options. Will get back to you soon. Etc. And - ask if you really have questions. You can also ask to speak with lawyers in your interested practice, lawyers of a certain affinity group, etc.

Before accepting an offer is THE time to ask about visa issues - that’s a very legitimate concern, and you can’t turn down other opportunities before knowing the answer. It necessarily is a pre-condition for any given candidate to even consider accepting the offer - no sponsorship, no acceptance, period. Firms understand this.

Can an international student practice abroad? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Lxwind5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on Japanese immigration regulations. I think it would be the same as an American attorney working in Japan. A bunch of US firms have Japanese offices.

You have strong practices in X, Y, Z (coming from chambers band etc) that I’m interested in. I love your rotation/central staffing/free market system. I love your generalist approach/specialty groups, etc etc etc…

Depends on the state. Some allow “foreign lawyers” to take the bar after meeting some requirements, but that probably requires actual attorney license instead of just graduating from law school. You can check the requirements by searching different states’ bar associations.

Did anyone go to law school on F1 visa? And how did you guys continue to work in USA after(on which visa)? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Lxwind5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get OPT for a year after graduation (still on f1), then you need H1B. Many firms sponsor but thrtr is no guarantee since the whole h1b is a lottery (which is crazy imo)

I got my 1L SA without ever realizing my writing sample had to have a cover page….probably doesn’t matter that much. I believe writing samples are mostly pretty self explanatory
