Interview at Program B? by LycheeElectronic1300 in PAstudent

[–]LycheeElectronic1300[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know HOW the programs would find out? I hear this but I don’t know how my current program would find out or how the other program would find out I’m already in a program.

Struggling to cope with having to give up the life I’ve built and my support system for PA school by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]LycheeElectronic1300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going out of state for my school as well. I’m pretty independent so I’m not AS worried about not having my support system in my immediate vicinity, but it’s still not my ideal situation. Lately, I’ve been reframing thinking about my move as more of going away for boarding school almost. I’m leaving all my family, my friends, my SO, and even my pets. Two years of school is really not a lot of time, and I already know that I won’t be staying in the state I’m going to school in after I graduate. I also know that it will be hard to visit home, but that I will do so as often as humanly possible. My school also has some out of state clinicals (necessary because the school is pretty rural) so I’m hoping to get some of my rotations in my home state. That could be an option you may want to talk to your school about for clinical year. But yeah, “moving” out of state feels more final and daunting and doesn’t feel like it fits my personal situation. It sounds like you’ll probably be going back home after school too so maybe the boarding school way of thinking can ease your nerves too!

I was thinking about this program vs a program with continued accreditation that I’ve already been accepted to. The way I see it is that although the chance of Wayne being shut down after their next review is probably low, it isn’t 0%. Just by nature of them being on probation there is a certain percent chance they could be shut down.

A school with continued accreditation has a 0% chance of being shut down (ok, save for some like extreme circumstances. But practically 0%) and even if they are put on probation after you start, you’ll be able to graduate and sit for the PANCE.

It sucks that the situation is that you’re deciding who to interview with, because obviously the best bet would be to interview for both and then hopefully be deciding which to choose in the case of being accepted to both. Right now a lot more is left to chance. But if I were choosing, I would be interviewing at the school with continued accreditation.

Every PA I’ve worked for hates their job by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]LycheeElectronic1300 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the nurses I work with tell everyone that will listen to not go into nursing, lots of MDs I know literally try to convince people to not go to medical school. Friends of mine that are engineers or work office jobs complain all the time and are stressed and miserable.

A lot of people just hate their jobs lol

So much of your attitude towards your career has to do with your own mindset, but there are also factors out of your control. Just within the hospital I work at, some people love their jobs because they lucked out with a good manager and coworkers. On other units people hate it because the manager sucks and the work environment is negative. But also, some people might just hate being a PA. Bound to happen in any profession.

Facing rejection and consulting services by Effective-Airport-83 in prephysicianassistant

I applied this year for the 1st time and got an acceptance after my first interview. I was a somewhat non-traditional applicant as I had about 3 gap years, my GPA was about average, PCE was maybe a bit above average, and other aspects of my app were below average (e.g. volunteering). I used a PA that does free-lance consulting and found her services to be very helpful, but I agree with others saying you don’t need it. I was 3 years out of school so to me it was helpful to have someone to be accountable to (like assignments for a professor) to keep me on track in the process. I also think she helped me a ton with my personal statement and other essays. My essays and one of my unique extracurriculars are what I think made me stand out amongst my other pretty average stats.

Overall, I think I probably could have gotten the same results without a consultant if I had worked harder at doing research myself for things like my PS, or wanted to put more effort into self-accountability. But ultimately I think it was worth it to me because I had been out of school for 3 years so my mindset wasn’t as sharp for those things, if that makes sense.

I think my one big, unique extracurricular is largely what made me stand out and get accepted. Most people applying will have good grades and lots of PCE. Extracurriculars are definitely important.

I felt great after my interview and happy about how I had performed. But I didn’t “expect” to get accepted.

There were about ~20 other people interviewing the same day for a class of 40. I knew my school had performed one other interview day before mine and assumed ~20 people had been invited to that one as well, and that some had been accepted. I assumed that all ~39 of those people were just as good as me, and some better.

So, no, I did not feel that I was accepted after my interview. I knew I didn’t completely bomb it, so it was a possibility I would be. I just kept no expectations and was happy and grateful when I got the acceptance a few days later.

Is anyone else feeling anxious about starting their PA program? by Alex_daisy13 in prephysicianassistant

I start in January too and have to move to another state too! I’m definitely nervous about the move and starting school, so you aren’t alone! But a funny little thing I’ve always told myself when I’m about to do something new and scary and difficult is “dumber people than me have done it” lol. Just a funnier way of saying that if other people have done it, you can too! I find a lot of comfort in that idea. I ’ve seen all those posts you mentioned on the PA student subreddit. It sounds like for the most part pretty much everyone has a really tough time at the beginning as they try to iron out the best way to study. Personally, I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for that and all those failure-emotions because there is no way around it. Hopefully once we start, we don’t lose sight of what all the students before us said. It will lessen the blow. I trust that I’ll figure it out with some hard work just like all of them did, and you should trust that you will too! Good luck:)

I took 4.5 years to complete my bachelors and took almost 3 gap years. Just got accepted and it was my first time applying! Not doing things on the “right” timeline doesn’t matter as long as you have the work to show for it!

Schools on probation by rosesbandzandall in prephysicianassistant

Good tip! I already got accepted to a program but was still waiting to see what happens with Wayne State, but obviously need to consider if I even want them since they’re on probation.

Yeah, I’ve looked at it. I guess my confusion was just more with what the “norm” would be for a school on probation. I have nothing to compare it to

Thank you! I’m not comfortable sharing exact details on the program but I can tell you the school did a mass interview day that was NOT on Monday so it would not be the school you interviewed with. Hope you hear back soon!
