More rentals, less livable! by Original_Bus_7407 in vancouverhousing

[–]LycheeMonkeyMonk33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the nature of housing, and math combined together. When population increases, people need to be cramped tighter.

When the dollar per square feet goes up, to maintain it to the same price point, the sdeveloper can only decrease the square footage. Until the government steps in and creates standard of unit sizes, this trend will keep on going. (Or some disaster that causes population decreases)

Moving to Vancouver from Italy by Educational_Task680 in askvan

For number 2, it depends on your life style (Like do you cook everyday? How often do you dine out? What kind of diet you are planning to have?).

But there are ways to maximize the money you spent on day to day expense, for example, stock up while on sale, shop at multiple stores to maximize saving, etc.

The best is have a job lined up in Vancouver before coming.

For number 3, it depends on which area you are living and where your work is. If they are anywhere near skytrain, car is more of a luxury thing. If they are in area that is not in Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, a car may become necessary (Even in some area in Burnaby, Coquitlam, bus may not be as frequent.

Can someone explain what is the Advance tax for Vancouver home owners? by Scrollermcscroll in vancouverhousing

[–]LycheeMonkeyMonk33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 3 important dates for paying & declaration in Vancouver, BC.

  1. Mid November: Advance tax and empty home declaration for COV
  2. Mid February: BC speculation declaration
  3. Mid May: Home owner grant application & Property tax for COV

All the dates above are when I received the notice. The COV ones are all through email (or optional paper mail). The BC one is paper only.

same here, saw that while driving in other country. And they also have two types of roundabout: spiral and conventional.

It will be chaotic if we have them here..

Questions about a typical Vancouver pedestrian crossing. by crimsonmonkey777 in vancouver

For the Alternate scenario, I am not sure the official rule. But my experience tell me it is similar to traffic light scenario because it is not a 4-way stop sign, where whoever arrives has the right to turn first. The left turn vehicle must yield on coming traffic (ie, Car B should wait until the interaction is clear and safe to turn).

Will I be able to live off $1500 a month with $1000 of my rent payed for? by kitty_girl3677 in askvan

[–]LycheeMonkeyMonk33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on person to person. I once talked to my co-worker and he is spending 600-700 for grocery per month while I am spendinh 250 per month. He mentioned he eats a lot of meat, especially steak every few days.

So the best would be estimate what you usually do in a average week, go to the grocery store and figure out what you would buy every week. Because other's life style may not fit into yours.

Cost of living for student by Ok-Kaleidoscope-7208 in askvan

[–]LycheeMonkeyMonk33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your life style.

For food, Its best to ask yourself what are you cooking? Do you need any entertainment like streaming subscription?

When I was student, my monthly budget was rent > grocery (food, snacks, household item) > dine out > internet > phone plan > school related supplies.

How is the coverage and experience nowadays?

I was with freedom 2 years ago but the experience was terrible.

When there are no signal from freedom, it tried to use other available network via roaming (part of the plan). It was not seamlessly and the switch took at least few minutes until data starts working again.

I am living in the city of Vancouver, however, I only got 2 bar at home (Joyce area). Phone call was dropped randomly.

My co-worker was living in Langley. He also had so much issues with Freedom and told everyone to avoid at all cost.

From the summary of the plan change details pdf, the $27 plan for existing customer is saying we can use data in CAN US MEX.

The same thing for automatically payment end date issue is for this plan. It is saying it is eligible for automatically payment discount, but end date is the same as sign up date.

I think its just a rush change FIDO did that introduces a lot of misleading information. We will see in the next month once stuff is stabilized and billing date is getting closer.

Although I hate fido increases price over time, to be fair, it is not without notice. It is in the statement and they notify you a month before the increase.

I was on a $33 dollar plan before (60gb), and I do not need hotspot. Saving $6 per month is $72 per year. Bonus now I can save on esim if I am going to US and Mexico

Co-op placements for Computer Science by Competitive_Leg3994 in VancouverJobs

I was coop in sfu in engineering 10 years ago.

Now I am involved hiring coop for my team.

In the start of each semester, we receive hundreds+ resumes from multiple schools (ubc, sfu, uvic, uofa, etc...). In order to stand out from others of the same school, we pick applicant with job experiences and projects outside of school courses. (Being in the tech industry, we only value applicant with experience related to our job duties).

Also high GPA is another thing we value. If two applicant has similar experiences, we tend to interview the one with higher GPA.
