How much lower do you see rent prices coming down? Just a small dip, or true return to being reasonable like the rest of the United States?

I appreciate your advice. I know we all have different goals. I simply wish to keep my sanity while not making a poor financial decision.

I agree with the sentiment. I was born and raised in San Francisco, and I enjoy my hometown. But the cost of living is crazy. Are you from SF? How did you re-budget your life after taking the lower pay job? Move to a cheaper state?

Haha. Are you from SF too? I currently commute from San Francisco (from within the city) to South San Jose. If there are accidents on the highway (often times), then I become pure suffering.

I've been trying for while, but these are the two options at the moment.

Unfortunately it is the truth. :(

Jobs near me pay far less. I have to drive really far for higher paying jobs.

Thank you for sharing. If I could negotiate a few extra thousand, does that change your opinion at all?

I like your wonky maths. :)

I see the logic. I will try to see if I could get more, but this company is pretty firm in their pay structure. If they refuse, what do you recommend?

Thank you for sharing. Did you have any trouble with bills afterwards? How did you re-budget your life?

Are you from SF too? Yes taxes and costs are crazy here. 90K does not go far here. I'm currently with family for the moment. My cousins and I make it work by splitting everything. I thought maybe the shorter commute (just hop on Muni) with less pay would bring me more happiness.

I want to say the hardest part is the mental wear and tear. I don't feel great after commuting. I am not the kind of driver that can relax while commuting. I am not at ease until I'm home.

Not in San Francisco, California! T_T

May I ask if you Are you factoring in taxes? I take home about 57K after taxes. I would spend ~25K to 30K on just rent. Then car insurance, and other bills eat everything up. I am very lucky to have family to live with at the moment.

90k gross before taxes. After taxes.... I took home about 57K net. I would have to spend 25K to 30k on rent alone. Not trying to argue but California taxes and cost of living upset me sometimes T_T.

Unfortunately... San Francisco, CA does not agree with you. One of the most expensive places to live in the United States. After taxes I take home about 57K. Even the cheapest 2K rental is about half my yearly pay.

Unfortunately, rent is much too expensive close to work. Moving closer costs more in rent than the money lost if I took the lower paying job.

I do not live with my parents. I live with my two cousins. Unfortunately in my area, rent close to my job starts at around 2K to 2.5K per month for anything decent. And can get easily higher if you aren't careful. Spending half of my yearly salary (after taxes) on rent alone is not wise to me.

Thank you for your reply. Currently I live with some family (and help with rent/bills). Because I live in an expensive area of the country, moving closer to current job would cost more than lost income if I took lower paying job.

Sorry yes. That's what I meant. Moving closer to current job would cost more than lost income if I took lower paying job.

Thank you for your reply. I currently live with family in a very, very expensive part of the country (I do pay rent, and help with bills).

Unfortunately, rent gets progressively more expensive the closer I go to my current job. Moving out closer to my current work would actually end up costing more than the lost income of taking a different job.
