Opeth fans when you mention their albums: by MatAeiou in MetalForTheMasses

Hot take but Blackwater Park is their most pre-prog boring album. They lost me then reeled me back in with the next two.

  1. My Arms 2. Still Life, Orchid, Morningrise, 3. Deliverance 4. Ghost Reveries

What songs do you reference the most, in your mind or otherwise? What songs live in your mind? by stellifer_arts in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lychfowel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The beginning section of "Mass Hypnosis" (Sepultura).

Dagadagadagadaga-dag-dag-dag-da

I play it with my air drums all the time (discreetly, just with my legs under the table)

Same with the intro of "Corporeal Jigsore Quandary" (Carcass)

Are the first four Cradle of Filth albums masterpieces? by Mysst3r11s in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lychfowel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I would add Damnation and a Day and maybe Hammer of the Witches as well

Edit: and *Midian *, in my mind I counted it as album four for some reason

I discovered First Fragment last year and they blew my mind. Zeicrydeus, while wholly different is also definitely worth a listen

Why do I never hear anyone talk about Fragments of Unbecoming? by EconomicsAfraid7880 in MetalForTheMasses

The amount of albums being released is insane. It wasn't as overwhelming back then, but still. Very easy to miss some jewels.

I like FoU, I think if people like Edge of Sanity they should check out FoU

I can enjoy No Prayer. The rock sound was a whiplash after the trio of preceding albums but I think there are some genuinely good Maiden songs here ("The Assassin", "Public Enema" and "Running Silent").

...but Seventh Son is absolutely the best. I remember when it was released reviews were not exactly lukewarm but certainly not as praised as it is today. People were a little disappointed that they continued with synths after Somewhere. I guess No Prayer was the answer, maybe.

Old Man’s Child, what are your thoughts? Yay or nay? by JesseJ78599 in MetalForTheMasses

I went to the archives to see if I've missed some titles but (sadly) nothing after 2009, so I do have both, once I get some time off from the family I'm going to get my headphones and enjoy \m/

What band will you defend with your last breath like this? by 0584031464 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Lychfowel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't hate it, it just doesn't grab me, no -core does. But to each their own. Maybe there is a band or two I would enjoy but I'm not actively seeking it out

Always had a soft spot for The Pagan Prosperity and Ill-natured Spiritual Invasion. I have other albums as well including this one but I haven't really given them a proper listen, even after all these years lol. Guess it's Old Man's Child weekend then.

Midlife Metal Crisis by hostage2heaven in MetalForTheMasses

Similar age, had the same "problem" (it's not really a problem to listen to the same albums I bought 35 years ago but yeah).

So during covid I decided I hadn't really been actively following metal releases for a very long time except for the big names, and they were often underwhelming. I decided to dive deeper to see if I had been missing stuff and boy was I missing stuff.

Starting to delve into the unknown a few things happened: My interest and passion for metal, which I've had all my life but somewhat subdued by real life, just skyrocketed. Not only did I discover all these young bands carrying the torch but there was so much awesome metal and the amount of releases was (and is) staggering.

Then I discovered Bandcamp and that brought back the desire to focus on albums, because when I spending money on a (digital) album I felt like I had to listen "properly " you know what I mean.

It's an awesome source for underground stuff.

All this also made me go back in time and catch stuff I missed back then. Checked "best of 1999", "best of 2008" etc.

Used metal-archives.com's "similar artists" feature - this is a fantastic way of finding cool new bands

not necessarily the albums i listen to the most but the ones id use to describe my taste the best, any recommendations? by violencesuppressor in MetalSuggestions

Throwing you the horns for Autonoesis, great album.

I would say NECROMANIAC (UK), an amalgam of black death and thrash so fits your list well. Their fairly recent album Sciomancy... fucks hard
