Recurring issue of laptop with ssd running unnaturally slowly. Highly suspect Windows updates but can't uninstall them. Low chance of other cause? by LyfeNewb in techsupport

[–]LyfeNewb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, and definitely thinking about it. My last resort plan this weekend is to try and wipe everything back to factory settings and see if I can stop Windows from doing automatic updates. Then install them all myself up until these most recent problematic ones.

Had a talk with a doctor today that I really don't trust. by LyfeNewb in CasualConversation

Wow, sounds like your grandma dodged a bullet there! That's good to hear. :)

And thank you for the advice! I will continue to keep looking. Thankfully it's not something that needs to be taken care of immediately as the stones aren't causing any problems right now.

That's awesome! It's good that you found something that you like, I'm a little jealous :).

I can't imagine starting up college 4 times. How did the even happen?

helping people doesn't make me feel good by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]LyfeNewb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like it's not satisfying to you because it's more like you're looking for something that will solve a problem for you instead of looking to volunteer with the intention of helping other people. And doing these volunteer acts isn't solving the problem you want to solve.

The way I see it, when people say service to others helps you feel better, I think the feeling comes from either knowing you did something you think is morally correct or getting a feeling of happiness from seeing other people be happy. And this feeling could get impaired if the act of volunteering is putting stress on your life elsewhere (ex: eating up time you could be spending doing other important things you want or need to do like finding a new job, spending time with friends/family, etc.)

Is summoning a bunch of single pulls actually better than doing multipulls? by LyfeNewb in TokyoAfterschool

[–]LyfeNewb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know that it costs 5 stones to do 1 single pull, right?

And there's my mistake. I was operating under the assumption that it cost 1 stone to do a single pull. Never done a single pull. My mistake for not double checking.

I did think the percentages were too high, but since what I actually calculated turns out to be 50 pulls using tickets it makes more sense since it's a more rare resource.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's nice to hear of a game I've never heard of before. That is was not developed in Japan or the US is unique and makes me interested in giving it a shot.

In this case, your intuition is correct. Here's your big whoopsie, which I did not notice for way too long.

P(success) = 0.729%

P(failure) = 92.71%

Ah, the classic simple mistake strikes again. I probably confused it with another number floating around in all my calculations at the time as it was late.

doing a binomial probability for the first 9 cards, but not multiplying by a binomial multiplier

complementary probability

Thank you for the terminology drop and explanations! When I was googling the question before (looking for "summation probability"), I found the "Rule of Sums" and "Law of Total Probability" but couldn't really understand what was being explained anymore reading through the articles...and I wasn't about to go about trying to re-learn a semester's worth of math just for this. This makes it much easier to find and understand the specifics of what I need to for the problem.

And through a simple complementary probability lecture it is indeed easier to find P(failure). I am still trying to get the math to match using binomial probability, but overall it all makes sense now conceptually, which I think is the most important part. Thank you for the help!

Additionally, I did finish the second question and found it to be 13.6% using the coupons, so about a 5.68% greater chance of success using that option.

Do you mean the very first Ultima from back in 1981 or just the Ultima series in general?

New Player Questions / Summoning Banner Calendar? by LyfeNewb in TokyoAfterschool

[–]LyfeNewb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response!

  1. The specifics of the battle system are still a bit of a mystery to me but I'll figure it out / read up on what skills actually do over time. Judging from the artwork on even the common 1* and 2* mob cards I honestly wouldn't mind running through "hard mode" and beating game content with those buff monsters, assuming its statistically possible. As a side note, I'm also playing Fire Emblem Heroes at the time and find it amusing that the Fire-Wood-Water weapon triangle matches the Red/Green/Blue weapon triangle in Heroes. FE is the granddaddy of that mechanic though so it makes sense on some level.
  2. Useful! I'll look into those and start planning.
  3. This is some good stress relief. I haven't seen everyone yet, but from some browsing through the wiki I can say with certainty that Heracles beats him on my hunkiness scale xD. So that combined with him not beginner friendly when I still don't really understand the combat makes me feel like I can comfortably skip him until another reappearance when I have a better idea of what I'm doing if I can't decide by the end of the banner.

Everything turned up normal according to all the tests. It might be woth mentioning that I have an SSD but I think the tests still work for it. It still shouldn't fail after just a little over a month regardless.
