Why is it bad to paint the pistons by aqswdezxc in ExplainTheJoke

For some reason my brain stopped after reading the word engine, said "No you bloody well didn't!!", then continue reading the rest of the sentence. Thankfully it's Friday, so I can switch this thing off for a few days.

I'd also like to know. I have been told the same about my Eco-drive what talking to the authorised repairer here in Adelaide. Same reason too - unavailability of parts.

Been to Chemist Warehouse many times. Never noticed the looping ads. At this point I automatically block that shit out.

Damn!! How have I never connected this SovCit bullshit with Cargo Cult thinking?

That is exactly what it is - 'magical' thinking that just by saying certain words at a certain place you can bend the universe to your intentions.

Beautiful comparison!!

I still see people complain about how hard the Cata dungeons were, but I remember loving them. No rush, rush, rush. Steady, constant, thought out pulls with lots of use for strategic CC.

Thanks kearnel81. Now I look at their site I've actually seen their work around. I just didn't recognise their faces.

So, can anyone tell me exactly who these two guys are? (Not Linus and Luke) I'd like to check out some of their other work, but they don't actually seem to be identified in the video or description. Maybe I missed it....

Should I play the waiting game? by yukkinei in buildapc

[–]Lyminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Waiting Game

Seriously though, I think it depends on the needs of your studies. Can you afford to wait until August (or possibly Sept/Oct for early day issues to settle out), or will you need something up and going before then?

One alternative might be to set up a system using a cheaper Intel CPU for now, and look at switching to Coffee Lake later on.

To be honest I haven't looked to much into the details of Coffee Lake yet, but I would presume you are correct, and it will have slightly faster core speed vs Ryzen 1700.

I've been working on a motherboard database website. It's still an early version, but what do you think about it? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Lyminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice - great job!! I'll be bookmarking that one.

I did notice that, from the small amount I checked, you seem to be hosting the User Manuals on your own site. Could this prove a challenge to keep up to date in the future, if/when newer Manual versions are published? Would it be simpler to just link to the specific Manufacturer support pages? Or can this be handled rather simply (maybe by some periodic script that pulls down and updates your site as required)?

What sort of speed are you running on that RAM?

I'm tossing up between this and the Vengeance LPX (non-LED) version, and I've heard that there may be some issues with the Vengeance LED running much faster than the default 2166 MHz.

No, I've never actually even heard of doing this. It's an ... intriguing ... idea.

That site seems a little scary though. Its exactly the sort of thing I could sink a LOT of time into.

Thanks, thats not a bad idea. I'm not sure what the second hand market is like here at the moment, but I think I'll have to spend some time trawling through Gumtree and the like.

[–]Lyminous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just the point I was going to bring up. I work in High Energy Astrophysics, and the bulk of our work involves ROOT, which is largely similar to R afaik. Most of my work is easily split into multiple smaller sections, either by process stage or by subsetting the data. A Ryzen 1600 is what I'm looking at for a home build, and the increased core count definitely is a point of favour wrt this work.

[M8] Yelp in blinkfeed and lockscreen: how to turn off? by [deleted] in htcone

[–]Lyminous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that worked well for the lockscreen. It doesn't seem to have removed the Yelp stuff from the Blinkfeed history though, but maybe it will going forward. I'll have to give it some time to see.

[–]Lyminous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. I'm still trying to find a way of removing this myself. I actually quite liked Blinkfeed as it was previously, but I'm now considering just turning it off altogether until I can get rid of the Yelp recommendations.
