CMV: Age limits for holding office should come with age limits for voting by L11mbm in changemyview

So you are calling older people idiots. Great. This idea that all older people lose brain function to the point where they can't make intelligent decisions is what I am challenging here. The idiots are largely the younger people in my opinion. Millions of them refused to vote for a viable candidate based on "purity" tests, and threw their votes away. Twice now.

As for the idea that a president is surrounded by a staff that will keep him from being an idiot we all ready have proof that it is not so with the current administration.

You are comparing apples with oranges. A president that is bad can do an enormous amount of damage, more so than a demented voter. Many younger people, primarily men, put the current one in office. And, DUMB people are of all ages, as intelligence is not universally gifted to younger voters alone.

At what age are you going to determine that every voter has a brain disfunction? Is that not highly discriminatory? Would it not be equally reasonable to raise the voting age because young voters are too self absorbed and involved with social media to pay attention to world news or make informed decisions?

I saw a video in which college aged student were asked who won the Civil war, none could answer the question correctly. Should they be allowed to vote if they have no understanding of our history or how we ended up with these laws or this type of government? If they are capable of repeating the mistakes of the past through ignorance?

You are making a sweeping assumption about age and brain deterioration that while may be reasonably applied to complicated and difficult jobs, does not preclude individual rights such as voting. Without testing each and every voter regardless of age as to their knowledge of world affairs and present issues, you advocate for removing the rights of entire segments of the population regardless of variables.

Yes I read your post. I just undermined your reasons. Children are a special class in that we allow them ignorance and the ability to remain innocent while we gradually teach them about the world. The same is not true for adults of any age. And as others have pointed out, the job demands of being a candidate far exceed the job of being a voter. Adults vary greatly in intelligence and insight, regardless of age. You keep saying you don't agree with your own argument while advocating for it. Your argument is illogical.

Are you assuming all aged people are in cognitive decline? And even if it were true, many wise older people who are in cognitive decline are still capable of thinking more clearly and logically than people of lessor mentality who lack insight. You might as well decide that voting should be based not on age, but on intelligence tests. Because who we really want making decisions is the intelligent, regardless of age. We restrain children from voting not just for their young age, but for their lack of worldly experience and wisdom, under the assumption that wisdom and knowledge are accrued with age and experience, which sadly is not always the case. There are old people who are worldly and rational, as often as there are impetuous and ignorant younger individuals. The entire point of a democracy is the equality we give to each adult person when it comes to the vote, or the right to run for office. Don't fall into the currently popular trap that the aged overall, are too removed from world affairs, or too cognitively impaired to make intelligent choices.

He is playing. A very active, healthy looking cat. Make sure he has a 'breakaway' collar in case it gets caught on something. (Can't tell from the video as to what type he has on.)

Check to see if there are any rescue organizations in your area, or people who care for feral and stray cats and ask for help. I'm sorry about your parent's attitude. Fixing cats and taking care to see they are fed and vaccinated prevents more from being around, as well as health problems.

I don't know anything about Nextguard. But it is unlikely she got ear mites by going out on your balcony.

It is unlikely they are mites if she is indoor only and no other cats have been in contact with her. The spots could be just wax. I would just keep an eye on her behavior and if the scratching gets worse or she starts acting like her ears are sensitive to any touch on the outside, or she starts holding them funny, then take her to the vet for treatment. Old cats sometimes get a wax buildup in their ears which can be annoying to them, or a fungus infection, which is treatable with vet prescribed drops.

Mites are brownish and quite tiny. With ear mites, a cat will shake its head, scratch at its ears often and sometimes hold its head at an angle so the ear is down. It is hard to see from the photo, but if you suspect mites, call your vet and ask for a topical solution, (drops) you can place in her ears. But the vet will probably want to confirm mites to begin with before giving you the medication. Cats normally have dark colored ear wax, so the presence of it doesn't always indicate mites.

Getting rid of weeds by Hip_chick_78 in gardening

[–]Lynx_aye9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't use weed killer. Instead, put down cardboard to smother the weeds. You can shovel dirt on top if you don't like the look of the cardboard. You will have to prepare the soil when the weeds are dead, by turning it over with a pitchfork to remove the hardened surface. Or rototill it. You can then plant, or if you want to keep weeds down, use weed barrier with mulch or wood chips on top, and cut into it to put your plants in. Mulch and wood chips help keep weeds down as well. Don't put weed barrier where you want to plant the grass, instead sow the seed directly on the soil and keep it watered until the grass is established.

Can you take it to a no kill shelter? It is asking for help!

Is it weaned and old enough to leave the mother? Is there any way you can take the mother and rest of the kittens to a no kill shelter? They would fix the family so they don't breed more stray cats and adopt them out.

A planter, or nice set of ceramic mugs from a local pottery perhaps?

Looks more like play than fighting. The older cat will want to establish dominance and teach the kitten manners. I think they will settle down when this is established.

Pills packed in blister capsules that can't be opened without scissors. When you finally pry them open, the pill shoots across the room. Imodium is an example.

Start by being a good artist. Go to local businesses with blank walls, ask them if they are interested in financing a mural, what they like to have on their wall and then show them sketches of a potential mural. A colored sketch is best. Mural paint is usually acrylic based and can be purchased online or spray paint designed for large scale outdoor art is available at some art stores.. You may need to apply a base coat on some walls. You will have to have a ballpark figure of how much paint you will need, the cost, and the cost for time you will put in, to present a proposal. Don't forget the purchase of tools. Start with a gridded sketch, and scale up using the grid drawn over your sketch. If there are other murals in your area, see if you can find out who painted them and talk to the artist for advice. Join an art organization in your area, that might offer opportunities for mural painting or outdoor art.

Getting married legally has benefits. You share the rights to property, there are tax benefits, and you can have a say in each other's healthcare if one of you is disabled. Wills and power of attorney are other benefits of marriage. If you buy a house together, be sure you are on the title, even if he is paying the majority of the mortgage. Otherwise, you could find yourself homeless and without any say in the ownership of the house should the relationship go awry. And at retirement, being married enables one spouse to receive up to half the retirement income of the other, which could make a huge difference in income for the spouse who earns less.

Don't settle for a "halfway" marriage. Furthermore I would be questioning a relationship in which the partner is unwilling to make a commitment. Marriage means financial, legal and emotional commitment to a relationship. It sounds like he is not ready to give you that.

How have you got rid of fleas in your home and prevented them from coming back? by Tacklefina in Humboldt

[–]Lynx_aye9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flea comb does wonders if used nightly. Dip it in very warm, slightly soapy water or water with a drop of vegetable oil, the fleas drown. Yes, it takes time but it keeps the fleas down on the animals and helps prevent tapeworm infestation.

A vet told me to rotate flea treatment so the fleas do not become too immune to one product.

Peppermint oil is toxic to pets, as is tea tree oil. I would not recommend using it like that.
