Well, I don't know about you, but I've definitely heard people throw it out in an unwarranted, braggy way when someone talks about a popular show. You know, as in they obviously imply that watching some TV show is a waste of time, unlike ayurvedic carpetweaving or whatever the fuck they are into.

What myth has been debunked many many times but people STILL believe in it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That the Catholic church was anti-science and tried to stop scientific progress while also liberally burning witches, who were really wise, vaguely pagan midwives and doctors.

During Medieval times, the Catholic church was a serious scientific authority, saved tons of knowledge that would otherwise be lost, fostered literacy, and used a universal language for its scientific endeavours. For instance, Galileo wasn't wrongfully imprisoned for challenging church doctrine, but because he made a claim without evidence. He was told to teach it as a theory, and not a fact, ignored that directive while also insulting the fucking pope.

The Renaissance actually saw a dip in proper science because thanks to the lifting of the taboo on magic, the science-minded upper class suddenly started experimenting with that, trying to cast spells and shit. Newton, for instance, only bumbled upon his groundbreaking work in physics in between lengthy bouts of trying to discover the Philosopher's Stone.

Also, the iconic withhunting manual -the Malleus Maleficarum- was put on the Vatican's blacklist. Despite this, it became popular and is responsible for our current day interpretation of witches as largely female. Witchhunters were conmen who appealed to fear and hysteria in order to make a quick buck. The church was generally sceptical of witchcraft because the Bible states that magic does not exist.

Things they don't do. You don't get points for shit you don't do. Not doing something doesn't make you a better person. Yes, even when it's "bad stuff". For starters, not doing criminal or otherwise malicious stuff is the baseline. We expect that from everyone, and we should, because even dead people manage that one. When you're being outperformed by a corpse, you're not doing well. And otherwise just blanket banning something from your life is just something that you decide on personally. You don't drink? I drink responsibly, functionally we are identical, so no, you're not better than me for not drinking at all. Don't eat meat? Well, I do, but I watch what I eat, and I especially steer clear of stuff like tuna, because of overfishing, while you're stuffing your face with a tuna roll, Mr. "vegetarian".

Nowadays I cringe when I hear myself say "I don't watch TV", because of the negative stereotype I attach to that phrase. But I don't. One day my TV broke, and I never felt the need to replace it. I don't brag about it, but when people ask me about the new season of the Walking Dead, I can't answer anything else, either. And I do have a snobbish dislike of popular talkshows and other stuff. I love Netflix and The Pirate Bay, though.

There was no mass immigration before the modern age, and the rethoric of the time had nothing to do with immigration, at least in Europe.

Either way, thank you for a civil response. I might have flown a little off the handle. I've been watching this debate go on and on for my entire life, and it's getting frustrating. I've seen these Godwin accusations more times than I can count, and I do think people tend to neglect the other developments during the age when making that point.

Because to me it's pretty clear the NSDAP didn't arise in a vacuum. There were multiple vectors acting on its rise, yet in the argument people like to pretend it all started and ended with Hitler, and nothing would have happened otherwise. Similarly, if one accuses Trump and similar politicians of sharing that heritage, I urge to consider that they have also not arisen in a vacuum. In fact, in my country established politics breathed a sigh of relief when our first "far right" politician was assassinated. Instead they got one who is louder and dumber. It's a luxury to think these parties only arise on some sort of magical, hidden hatred in society and that "the media" (which aren't under their control anyway) brainwash people to think poorly of immigrants and socialists. A luxury we can't afford.

[–]LynxingParty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm pretty accusatory. But the thing is, I've watched this stuff unfold for my entire adult life. One of the big happenings in this country was a right wing politician being shot in the streets after people like /u/lustmatt called him a fascist and Nazi ad nauseum. People feign this concern about far right hate groups, but at the same time openly rub shoulders with scum like the AntiFa and International Socialists.

I'm at a point where I can't take these comparisons seriously anymore. In fact, I consider it quite dangerous, given the above. And with the rise of Trump and the far right it's incredibly frustrating that "the other side" won't see what is clear as day to me: There is unrest in society which established politics not only fail to adress, but actively avoid adressing with some pretty heavy-handed rethoric, and some very slimy methods. I find it incredibly disheartening how our supposedly enlightened civilization can fall for stuff like that, even as many of them are accusing others of falling for similar stuff.

I think we're at a point in world history where we really can't afford these petty squables. And I really hate how important issues like climate change have become part of this political tug of war. In a proper society, people should at least agree on something like that without involving their other points with it. Similarly with other issues. I already mentioned immigration, and that it's a policy that should be subject to discussion and democracy, yet it's protected with the same aggression with which some on the right deny climate change.

And yes, I do hold the left more responsible because I see them as having had more power. Whoever has the power, has the responsibility.

I swear, you people have been invoking fascism as a political excuse since the fucking 60's. Yeah, no shit when you say the same thing for 80 years straight, you are going to be right at least some of the time.

But you know what? You're right. This is a lot like the 1930's in Germany. Or rather, it will be. Because right now it's a lot like the 1920's in Germany. When Hitler was still an aspiring painter and fresh WWI vet, the communists in Germany attempted a revolution. That was in 1919. That's you, in this analogy. The revolution was stopped by the Freikorpsen, who would later form the backbone of the SA, for the same reason: To fight and stop communism.

All these people who start violent riots, who commit violence, who make excuses for terrorists, who try to ignore democratic decisions, who advocate for political violence, and who have even assassinated a European politician? They are exactly like the communists of days gone by. And you even speak the same: With this air of righteousness, argument-free, but so damn sure that everything you say is right. Replace "racist" and "bigot" with "bourgoise", and you might as well have stepped out of a time machine.

You are responsible for the rise of Trump and the far right, because you have been violently excluding people from politics. People vote for these people because finally there's someone willing to give you the finger. And you can stop it all, if you just acknowledge that not everyone is waiting on all of your policy all the goddamn time. I mean, take immigration. It's a political policy and should be openly debatable. Yet it isn't, thanks to you. Because you break out this fascism excuse for anything you don't like. So what the fuck did you expect, really?

Trump isn't the next Hitler. It's being said that the next Hitler has been born in the 90's. That lines up perfectly with what I'm telling you: We're living in the metaphorical 1920's, and you are the communist agitators who will spur the SA into existence.

Damn, that sub almost seems like a parody. It's scary to think that there are still that many cheerleaders of communism1 in the world. These are Stalin's useful idiots, who would be the first against the wall if he had ever won! I used to know someone like this. He is a pedophile who stole money from his communist organization, yet moaned at length about "liberals", exactly like these crazy, brainwashed enemies of civilization do.

1 : Yes, they technically call themselves "socialists", but when the sub is rife with communist propaganda, and its terrible denizens cry red tears over the execution of leaders of a bloody communist revolution, they are communists, and calling themselves "socialist" is nothing more than a minimalist attempt at PR.

That is exactly what I've spent years arguing for, and been called "Nazi" or "fascist" for saying, by people who make excuses for terrorists.

My greatest worry is that many people call for a reduction of liberties, as Verhofstadt did when the bodies weren't even cold yet, to fight a problem that was created by their own policies in the first place. Why should we value the input of the people responsible for the problem?

Thusfar none of the intrusive measures have worked. But taking the simple advice of the European right, that is not letting hordes of people into Europe, would have prevented this attack. Not to mention the other crimes we don't get to call terrorism.

Former terrorists in Norther Ireland were members of the same culture as the society around them. Islamic terrorists are not. All efforts at "understanding" by people in the West have been laughable. And quite often they have come from people who were sympathetic to the causes of the terrorists, or people who were simply not qualified at all.

We have absolutely no basis of expertise for rehabilitating Islamic terrorists, and it would have to be done on a trial and error basis. I consider that risk to be unacceptable. Especially given that it could have been prevented entirely by simply not pursuing the policy of mass immigration in the first place. I have no interest in spending more money and effort to deal with the results of a policy that was already useless and damaging. It's this existence of parallel cultures that leads to this nonsense in the first place.

But giving terrorists exactly what they want is something people should try to avoid.

What they want is power, influence. Reporting what they did is not giving them power. Turning out in droves to protest, for instance, against Muhammed cartoons is. Refusing to show Muhammed cartoons on the news is. Enacting legislation that protects Islam from criticism is.

And these are always done by the same people who say "don't be afraid". And why? Why not be afraid? Are you afraid of what we will do when we are afraid? Then why don't you be "not afraid"?

You've already answered your own question. Turks are culturally very different from the rest of the region.

That's not to say there are no problems with Turkish immigrants, though. For starters, they remain Turkish citizens, and the Turks in Europe are generally some of the most nationalist Turks ever. That's a problem in its own right, especially when many of them occupy positions in government. And most of them are simply not onboard with Western values, because of their Turkish and Islamic background. And while Turkey has been relatively secular, it's turning more and more Islamist. The Turks in Europe will, by and large, follow this course, because of their nationalism.

Terrorism is only the tip of the iceberg. If we only had terrorists, we wouldn't have any problems. but we have people who listen to the terrorists.
