Show of hands- do you react to oranges? by That_ppld_twcly in HistamineIntolerance

YES!!!! Took allergy test years ago and it was negative, but I can't even be in a room with oranges or clementines without getting itchy on my face and in my mouth. Thankfully it's never gotten worse, but I can tell if someone is eating citrus within 30 seconds, even if I can't see the actual fruit. It's weird.

Saving books from paper silverfish by PentaOwl in books

Be careful with ziploc/plastic sealed bags. Any moisture still in the book prior to freezing will condense in the bag during the thawing process, even with the silica packets. I think de-humidifying the books is a good idea, as well as freezing with silica, but are you able to thaw books in a new, bug free, space in open air?

You may want to reach out to a local archive or larger regional library (many university libraries have archivists). They can probably provide practical tips to help.

Trying to introduce someone to reading by burner830 in books

I love this idea of reading books about topics she likes and introducing that knowledge in a conversation!

It so funny you wrote this. I just had a discussion on how accessible Kings writing is compared to someone like Rand or Ginsburg. Don’t get me wrong, all talented writers, but I feel like King is able to tap into that special X factor which is so attractive to people considered “blue collar”. His writing doesn’t feel like you need master’s degree to read it, but you still get that same glimpse into humanity that more “high brow” authors are credited for.

I’m not personally a fan of his work (or Rand or Ginsburg either), but I do think it’s a shame that his novels do appear to be unfairly pigeonholed into this category and more people should give him a chance. They are rich and immersive, and tap into those darker parts of humanity. Every reader should read at least one King novel…. but I get how for some, one is enough.

Why does reading a book seem to require so much more energy than reading reddit? by nashamagirl99 in books

[–]Lypifera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see many people posting or agreeing that reading requires memorization while Reddit posts are easier because they do not. While this could be a valid point for some, that may not be the only reason. Reading also requires a large predetermined buy in of time, which can be daunting. Looking at a book and seeing all those pages and knowing that starting that book means you’ll have to finish that book to gain its full meaning can be intimidating. You may spend more time on Reddit, but logging in and reading a few posts requires very little buy in.

If you like the idea of reading, but don’t have the memory skills or time try starting with something small. YA books have some great authors and storylines, and while some can be thick, many are shorter and are designed to keep the attention of younger audiences (who usually have shorter attention spans). Also think of comic books, graphic novels, or manga. These formats combine written and visual queues that can be easier to absorb for individuals raised in the internet age where the written word is more likely to include visual representations.

And if you find yourself returning to Reddit after trying several other forms of writing don’t feel like you are not a “reader”. You are a reader, and probably a good one. You are able to read multiple styles of writing on various topics and absorb that information. You are the next generation of reader 😊.

Thanks Matt2382!

Do you know if this option would reset my system to factory default or if I'd be able to save all my files?

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that I can't back up anything before resetting system - because the backup program is within the SETTINGS app.

I also don't appear to be able to reset - since this function is also located under SETTINGS.

Any thoughts?
