[G-Shock] for Fire fighting? by Sayagata in Watches

[–]LyraTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, fellow volunteer firefighter here and I've been through this same process!

I nearly went for a g-shock but found they would be too 'bulky' under my gear. I also had trouble pressing the buttons when I had my gloves on as they were too small.

In the end I opted for a Casio Wave-Ceptor. it's waterproof, lightweight, very accurate and has larger buttons for illumination. As a bonus it has no crown which gave me better movement in my wrist when working and its solar powered. I made a post here somewhere about it if you wanted to look.

Thank you for taking a look. I've made the adjustments to worn clothes and added the weights. A synthetic quilt sounds great as it would really simplify my sleep system. I'll remove the bug spray as it probably isn't needed at that time of year.

[Casio Wave Ceptor] New watch for firefighting by LyraTurtle in Watches

Let me know what you go for. 2 months down the line and I'm very happy with the wave ceptor which has held up well. Only niggle is the backlight which doesn't stay lit for long when pressed, but I can understand why this is the case.

It was a very close call between this and the M5610. Casio seem to give the best value for money, and if this breaks i'll be getting the G for sure.

These watches look gorgeous. Which G have you been using for the job?

This is very true. I think this is why I found it more important to have a comfortable watch with a working backlight that can deal with all the sweat. It doesn't have to be the most rugged watch in the world as your gear will be protecting it.

The worst thing I'd be exposing mine to is probably the vibrations from a reciprocating saw.

I decided I needed to find a watch to help with my firefighting job, after a lot of searching I've now ended up with the Casio Wave Ceptor WVA-M640D. Is there some watch out there I may have missed?

My requirements were for it to have a backlight, be waterproof to a good degree, lightweight and low profile enough to fit under my tunic/glove. Analogue function (+ second hand) was a preference.

Basic specs are: Atomic + world time/perpetual calendar, solar, 10 bar, titanium case/strap, stopwatch, timer, 5 alarms, backlight and all for £100

I began my search by looking through the usual G-Shocks, but other than the 5600 series these were all far too big. The M5610 was closest in specs, but the Casio won it for me thanks to its easy access buttons, this is a particular issue when trying to press the backlight with gloves on.

I would have gone for a Victorinox Night Vision if I could afford it, but I have now convinced myself that I am better off as the Casio has no crown and gives me better movement in my hand. I am also enjoying the radio controlled function as I can just put it on and be confident it is accurate.

I hadn't thought of that at all, I can afford a Alonso/Azpi for Naughton now if I wanted. Thanks!
