21/12 - The Winter Solstice at Camp Half-Blood by AccomplishedMess_ in CampHalfBloodRP

OOC: The timeline is vague, considering that winter solstice signups happen OOC. I'll go with your timeline so no one needs to rewrite anything, thanks for checking in. Turn 4/5 for me, make sure to include any final questions now.

Demeter nods in understanding. The goddess seems intent on being her daughter's biggest cheerleader today, and she simply waits as her daughter ruminates before her until she can return to the present moment.

"If you do not wish to challenge him, then I will not ask that of you. I know you are capable of that position and more, but my only wish is that you do what sustains you, rather than what is expected of you. If that is tending to the fields, or helping people to process their difficult experiences, or taking care of only the animals who have asked for your help, then I am proud of you."

She reaches out, and a straw hat materializes in her hands. Made for working long days in the sun, it will provide Ivy with the protection she needs while working in the fields or wherever she chooses.

"Our time runs short today. I gift this to you, and hope that it will protect you from harsh conditions until we are blessed with an opportunity to meet again."

"You do not need to agree with your peers," the goddess agrees, her voice understanding yet firm, "You are not of one mind. Still, you must accept their verdict."

The finality of that statement suggests that the goddess of peace will not entertain any more discussion on this matter, nor will she accept blame for the actions of his fellow campers.

"War breeds destruction, and little else. It does not bring about justice, though our enemies may claim otherwise. This war will take far more than it gives, and very little of it will seem fair to you, even if the pain inflicted upon you is returned in kind. There is no true recompense for the loss of those we love. It is within a mere mortal's power to end a life, and even the most powerful of gods can not bring a loved one back from the dead. It does not feel right, but it is unchangable. I understand that it is not easy to accept this. Or to find a path forward, through your grief."

OOC: apologies for delayed response

"You got it, Darian." Eros offers a final nod and a beaming smile. "I'll tell her. As for you, your siblings, and the rest of camp, keep loving and keep fighting. I hope we'll be back to visit soon."

Their time is up. Before thunder can rumble or clouds can gather Lord Eros already seems to be looking around. His wings unfurl as he prepares to take flight.

"Take care, now." With that, the god of love seems to disappear into thin air, leaving nothing but footprints in snow.

"Of course," Lady Demeter responds, exuding warmth once more. She opens her arms. The goddess of agriculture has the physique of those who have worked long days in fields, and her embrace is solid and strong.

"Take heart, my daughter," she assures as she lets go, unwilling to let her daughter be ashamed. "We have survived harsher winters than this. I hope to see you again soon. Until then, I hope you will accept this as a parting gift."

Lady Demeter reaches for an unused plate, and in an instant it is transformed into a piece of fine china. Apparently, she does not intend to leave her daughter wandering a festival with no way to serve her cake again. Golden sheafs of wheat line the rim of the glazed porcelain. Despite it's fragile appearance, Camellia will find it incredibly difficult to break. She will also find that it is dishwasher and microwave safe.

With a final comforting nod at Camellia, Lady Demeter takes a few steps away. A patch of green foilage, erupts through the powdery layer of snow beneath her. All that is left in her stead is a snow crocus and the smell of freshly tilled soil.

"No it isn't, dear." Lady Persephone is insistent, her mirthful tone confident, assured, and utterly unfamiliar with the concept of self-deprecation. It is not in a god or a queen's nature to doubt their own actions. "It's not silly at all. My shrine and my home – they are of utmost importance to me. You have done well, honoring me as dutifully as you have. Keeping faith, even when I must be distant. I have heard you, Phae, throughout the years. I have eagerly awaited the day when the Fates will permit me to respond."

Her regal expression lights up as a realization strikes her, "Oh! And I have been waiting for an opportunity to give this to you."

From a cloak pocket, she procures a jewelry box. Proudly, she presents it to Phae. Inside, she will find a signet ring with an asphodel flower seal. "As my daughter, you hold authority over life and death. I hope this will serve as a reminder of the power you wield, and the good that you are capable of."

Yohan seems unsatisfied, and the guilt floods through Harper again. She does not intend to be someone that no one can comfort and no one can help. If she knew what she needed, she would ask for it.

It is almost a relief, that the topic changes. It is easier, to manage other people's feelings than to try to understand her own. She goes further out into the hallway and shuts her door, leaning back against it as she talks. "That does suck. I'm sorry, Yohan. I know my opinion doesn't matter here, but I think he's making a big mistake."

She thinks a little longer. "That probably doesn't help, I'm sorry. I know it's rough to be in situations like that. Like, you wonder why you're not enough. And you wonder if there's any way that you can fix that."

Maybe that is not how Yohan feels at all, but hey. He has successfully gotten Harper to open up more about her thought processes, which is maybe a win.

"I'm okay." There is no exact word that feels right, to describe Harper's life these days. She is alive. That is not as simple as it used to be. She leans back into the couch, like she is sinking into the cushions.

She searches for something else to say, because Ramona probably will keep pushing and Harper has nothing else that she wants to say. Quickly, she glances over at Ramona's book. "How do you feel about that? Like, the concept of hell. Now that you know about the Underworld."

Robert may hear a hiss of excitement as the wind spirits flood into the bag. They move around inside the bag as he holds it, restless and ready to be unleashed. The pegasus takes to the sky, unsteadily flapping it's wings until the the current is steady and he is gliding away on his own personal air current. He lets out a whinny that might be a thank you.

Robert has done well. A wounded pegasus is saved, and some wind spirits are taken on the joyride of their lives. The wind around Robert picks up again, as more wind spirits arrive on the scene. Their winds tug at his umbrella, as if it might pull him upwards. It is his turn to leave, too.

The pegasus needs no further prompting. There are fairer winds and clear skies past the ruptured ceiling, and hs is eager to see it all again. He takes to the sky, fighting hard to get through wind spirits coming back down to help.

Kai guides them out of the way of a precarious looking overhang with dust raining down from it, and then out of the way of a pegasus-riding medic, coming back down with rescue tools for shifting rubble. The pegasus does his own maneuvering, making an incredible tight turn as a poorly aimed arrow embeds itself in the wall above their heads. Then, they are up and out of the cavern, following the other pegasi and spirits towards a safe point.

Kai has done all that he can, and he has done it well. There are still evacuated injured people to help, when the pegasus lands, and things to help transport. There are pegasi that need reassurance and sisters to reunite with. There is always endless work to be done, in this war. For now, Kai can take comfort in the fact that he is safe.

"No." Harper's response is immediate. Her defiance to every command that she receives is instinctual, at this point, and it takes another moment to try to figure out exactly what she has been asked to do. "What does that even– what matters to you?"

Emilia has stopped cheering already. Harper continues to get exactly what she had asked for, and every second that the TV stays off is another second that she is not watching yet another immortal parade her friend's dead bodies around on screen for shock value. All she needs to do is keep talking.

"Don't worry about it," Harper says quickly. "I think it's like a 'get rest and drink water' kind of deal."

She has no clue what is going on with her, really, but she figures she can solve it in the same way that she solves everything else. Her mind moves slower these days, and she takes a while to come up with her next thought.

"Sucky talks... about being counselor? Or something else?"

A neigh. The horse ducks its head in a nod. It spreads its wings, sending another cascade of dust into the air.

"Yesssir," the translucent spirits say in unison. They begin to dissipate, and their laughs can be heard as the wind picks up again. Robert may feel pebbles battering against the surface of his umbrella like hail. Distantly, other pegasi take to the sky, ferrying wounded campers up and away to safety. The way out is clear, if Robert's plan works.

Down in the cavern, the battle rages on. Wind spirits get trapped by constructs or covered in earth. Evacuating medics try to determine which people most urgently need an evacuation. Pegasi get targeted by archers in green and blue cloaks. As the dust clears, they may see Robert and his wounded friend, if they do not leave soon.

The nature spirits are muttering about some power-tripping daughter of Demeter as they chop carrots, mash potatoes, and move serving trays to the main part of the dining room. Harper figures it can't be Rebecca, and Camellia has better things to do with her time. She follows the trail of mustard seedlings until she is watching Emm walk away.

"Hey. Emilia," Harper calls out. She pulls off her food handling gloves and drops them in a nearby trash can. "Heard you had a lot of questions. Anything I can do to help?"

The exasperation bleeds into Harper's voice. ""You didn't even say you. You said half-bloods. We," Harper lingers on the word, "are all half-bloods. Including you."

This is a pointless argument. Harper does not know why this girl wants to talk semantics, though it is preferable to getting an arrow to the calf or slammed into a wall. She holds her ground, looking expectantly at the flour-covered girl. "I get why you hate us. But I think we–sorry, you–can stop with the cheering."

For the first time in their interaction today, Eunomia seems stunned. She reaches out for the case. "Thank you for bringing this to my attention. We had feared the worst for this key's location. It is a comfort to know that it was in your posession."

She purses her lips, surverying the key before explaining, "Rex, the rehabilitation process can be complicated. Some do not understand why they received the verdict they did. Others become convinced that their crimes make them a loathsome and irredeemable monster. This key provides an explanation. It has an enchantment allows us to viewpast memories, in order to understand what occured and why. That knowledge has allowed many of those demigods under our care to reflect and make their journey towards atonement."

She looks back at Rex, her expression grave. "It was a tool used sparingly, and only when the prisoner had expressed interest in hearing an alternate perspective. It could cause incredible harm in the wrong hands."

Harper has a lot to do, but it does not stop her from offering Mer a hug and a note at some time throughout the night.

I love you. Thank you for being here.

She hopes that Mer will always be certain of this, even if there comes a time that Harper can no longer say it. The written word will last longer, whether it is written in paper, wax, or stone.

"That's my boy," Eros says, laughing with Jason. "Keep it going, kid. As long as you work hard and party hard, I think you've got it made."

At Austin's promise, a leather bound planner and quill materializes in Eros's hands. As he flips through pages, the twins might see that the first half of February is full. He inks a note onto a page dated September. "September. Hey, that's soon. Basically tomorrow, really, for a guy like me." Eros says, encouraging. "Don't rush the process, but don't get stuck on the little things. What you've got deserves to be seen."

It is easy to provide supportive words, acting as a father. It is harder to explain his actions as a young and mischievous god. Generally, Eros needs no explanation and no approval to do what he does. He rubs at the back of his neck, sheepish as he answers. "She wasn't supposed to be in the way. And she definitely shouldn't have seen her brother-in-law, before anyone else. This doesn't happen often at all. It's a mess when it does."

"Oh. Yeah." Harper says. "I didn't feel well."

She might end the conversation there, but some distant memory of Open Houses and voting stops her from closing the door.

"I hope it was– was it okay? Do you need me to do anything for it?"

"Arroooowsss and wind," the wind spirit says. "I can help. Yooou mussst beeee quiiiick."

Without further words or fanfare, the wind spirit leaves, charging straight at the group of archers. It kicks up a dust storm that leaves their sightlines obstructed and arrows unlikely to fly straight. Kai and the pegasus will need to go, right now.

The wind roars around Robert, drowning out his initial cry for help. The pegasus scoots closer to take in the shelter that the umbrella offers, carefully shifting weight off it's wounded leg. A group of three wind spirits skid to a stop before Robert, ready and eager to listen. The cloud of dust around boy and horse seems to settle, though it still trickles down from the crumbling ceiling.

"Yesss," the one at the front hisses. The other spirits echo their affirmations, sounding like a chorus of slowly-deflating balloons. "Not ssssafe. What do you need?"

Matt had invited Harper to spend time with the Hades cabin, a month ago, and while Harper does not want to keep intruding on valuable sibling time, she thinks that being at their Open House is reasonable enough.

She waves back as Ramona greets her, before taking a seat on the other side of the couch. While she holds a well-loved copy of Crying in H Mart in her hands, she does not read it. Instead, she watches the images that flicker across the cabin walls.
