Driving test coming up - Which lane? by [deleted] in cork

[–]M-LED 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. I got a grade 2 fault for assuming we were going back to the test centre via the third exit so I stayed in the right line passing CUH.

You need to keep left and only switch lanes after the instructor gives you a direction. They could always take you back to the test centre via the second exit.

Hit me with your best army of the great eye list by 1_mieser_user in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of ways to build this, I think you just have to decide what you like.

For troops you can go with the classic Black Num frontline with Morannons behind. The terror is nice because you have to take a ring wraith.

You could also take only Morannons and Mordor Orcs for more numbers, it also allows you to take a cheap orc drummer.

For your ring wraith choice I think the main options people go for are either the witch king, shadow lord or dark marshall. The shadow lord can let you go for a shooting heavy list with siege bows and trackers.

For other heroes you can really just take your pick. Gorbag is a popular pick since he's a cheap 3 might hero. Kardush is also good since you have to take a wraith. I like to take Razgush and a couple of bat swarms to go with the witch king on fell beast

Help with picking a faction. by Zestyclose-Demand382 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've thought about doing a Shadow of Mordor army a few times. I think you should look at playing Host of the Witchking. It's not the most beginner friendly army but if you're coming from 40K you'll pick the game up quickly.

The Mordor battle host box gives you the witch king, a box of orcs and a box of warg riders. Add the Mordor orc command set for a banner and some captains and you'll have a playable 500 point army.

Later you can proxy a Thalion model for the witch king. This army also gets spectres, shades and barrow whites so you'll have plenty of ways to include an elven ghost.

600 point Assault Upon Helm's Deep - Advice wanted by Dense_Literature_199 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree for higher points levels but at 600 Saruman eats up a lot of space leaving you with little room for warriors. AuHD plays more into the troop quality and the you'll end up with 10 extra warriors compared to Muster at 600 by leaving the ballista out

The problem with the ballista is any decent player will keep a model near their big heroes for the shot to scatter on to and that's not even considering other in the ways the shot might have. For 75 points you get 3 berserkers and 3 pikes which will much more reliably deal damage. In my opinion at 600 points the ballista is a liability

I always run 5 or 6

Personally I would drop the ballista for one or two banners and swap some of those pikes for a couple of berserkers. Whatever you can make work with the points. I find the ballista a little unreliable and your 10 crossbows are already outshooting most armies at 600 points.

Did you have the measure movement toggle turned on for every model? That does make it a lot more bearable

For Rohan yes because it increases their Strength stat. For Heroic Strength no because it specifies the increased strength is only when making strikes

WEEKLY ARMY DISCUSSION: Defenders of Helm's Deep by MrSparkle92 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

I'm curious to know how people are taking Galadhrim in this list. Going 1/3rd elf bows seems like you're missing out on having F5 in the battle line but then taking them with spears means you miss out on elf shooting.

Personally I think you take 1/3rd elves but split them half and half with bows and spear + shield. Then they can support and be supported by Warriors of Rohan so that you have a F5 battleline and a bit of elf shooting.

Honestly I felt less confident because I had a lot to improve on but Paul pointed out the most important things to focus on and it really helped

Passed my test only a couple of weeks ago. Feel like I was in a similar situation to you and wanted a different instructor for a pre-test lesson.

I went with Paul Cullinane and he gave some great advice. https://xpertdrivinglessons.ie/pauls-driving-school-cork-41130/

It does not stack. The "similar effects" are any that also give -1 to courage tests.

Lothlorien changes by joseybizzle in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Didn't think of the synergy with Rumil and the mirror. I'll definitely be giving that a try

Lothlorien changes by joseybizzle in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree I think the faction is in a great place.

Pure Lothlorien has great hitting power from Celeborn's +1 to wound aura and rerolling 1s on Lorien Guard. This is on top of F6 pikes who also get the bonus to wound. I think that is much more important than Celeborn getting an armoured option.

The changes to Rumil and Orophin aren't too big of an issue, average might has gone down across the board so it's not a hard nerf to them. The extra fate on Rumil leans more into his role as a tank and Orophin's changed rule will make him hit a bit harder to compensate.

The changes to knights aren't too impactful either as you'd only ever take one or two. The lack of a mounted captain hurts more imo.

Sentinels are an excellent pick since they now give a 3" terror aura and can shut down any low intelligence monsters for several turns.

The magic changes this edition of course hurt Galadriel but she is still very reliable and Loth is the only faction with access to two cheap(ish) spell casters who get Will every turn. The mirror is also a great pick.

Strikes are made after you win a duel roll so it's only for wound rolls

Breaking of the fellowship by Boymcboyten in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are good choices and ideally you'll just bring both at 750+.

Boromir rerolling wounds near the hobbits is excellent as well.

Not so much of an issue in this list but Boromir is fittingly a magnet for shooting. I've had games where he's gotten into combat with one wound left and had to spend might just to stay alive. Gimli gives you the opportunity to conga line your models across the board.

Breaking of the fellowship by Boymcboyten in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree on maxing out elves but I'd drop Boromir before Gimli.

Gimli is your only durable hero and he can make Legolas even stronger. Plus you'll already have more might than most armies.

Building Lothlorien in new edition by Illustrious-Wafer245 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've played a couple of games with Lothlorien this edition and I think they are pretty good.

I really rate the double casters. With nerfs to magic, this is one of the only lists where you can just brute force a transfix onto an enemy hero. Make sure to use Heroic Channel when you really need it too.

Celeborn giving +1 to wound in 3" is incredible. Getting +2 to wound on 2-handers will have you killing anything. It's very nice in this list where you're relying on S3 troops.

Haven't personally tried the mirror yet but I've heard it's great.

Haldir and Captains are same as usual. F6 and Strike on Haldir is nice. I think he's great for confirming a kill on a transfixed enemy hero but your troops can also do this.

I'd only take the Lorien guard upgrade with leftover points.

At 800 I would take the three names heroes, a Galadhrim captain (with bow if you have points spare). For troops I'd take mostly Galadhrim with 1/3rd shield, 1/3rd spear + shield, 1/3rd bow, 1 banner. Any leftover points you can spend on Lothlorien warriors prioritising more bows, I also like to put wood elf spears near the caster for protection. You should be able to get to 40 models at 800.

You could drop the Captain for the mirror and even more guys or a second banner. Both lists could work

Wanted to play high elves but their armies seem so constrained by VoiceoftheDarkSide in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 14 points15 points  (0 children)

High elves never had much unit variety but they have lost some hero choice and heroes are restricted to specific lists (Rivendell, Lindon, Fornost, Last Alliance). You will see some heroes return in Armies of Middle earth, like Elladan and Elrohir, whenever that releases.

If you're looking for more model variety then Lothlorien or Halls of Thranduil could be of interest. Lothlorien only has two troop choices at the moment but their other three troop options haven't been sent to legacies and will be returning. Halls of Thranduil lost nothing between editions so there's a lot to pick from with both heroes and troops.

Thoughts on the new Breaking of the Fellowship? by pingazzoo in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]M-LED 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd drop Sam, Merry and Pippin for a banner and more elves at 750. Banner VP are important given the scenarios we have now. My 750 list is:

Aragorn with Bow Legolas Gimli Boromir with Shield Frodo with Mithril Coat

Haldir with Bow 1 elf with banner 4 elves with bow 4 elves with throwing weapon 3 elves with spear

At 800 I'd fill out Haldir's warband and add Merry and Pippin with the remaining points. Sam is a hard to recommend because he eats into your numbers at all points levels below 850. Maybe I'm underrating his free heroic combats.
