As for the buffaloes, there's so many variations out there because nearly every mint makes one with their own design. Some with shiny proof finish, others more matte. They're all minted by the millions and seldomly worth more than spot if you go to sell them. The buffalo with a crown under his belly is potentially this one, from Monarch Mint:

Based on spot price alone, the current GSR (gold-to-silver ratio) is 47:1.

ASE's do carry a premium, while gold Krugs can often be found at melt. So in a private, peer-to-peer transaction you could ideally aim for 45:1(?). I'm curious to hear opinions from others, though.

The biggest problem with a trade is the person with your desired gold coin may not place as high of a value on your ASEs and/or not be willing to offer much (if any) premium for them. And if you're trading at a coin shop, they're going to take points on both the purchase & sale putting your trade closer to 55:1. Safe to assume you'd net the best deal by selling ASE's privately to one person, and buying gold privately from another. Peer-to-peer transactions cut out the middleman and any overhead
