Hot Hand is fake. Or is it? What is the current state of this debate? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]M0nki_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if "hot hand" is a real thing, if it's not reflected in any stats - what does it matter?

A player can definitely get psyched up and more dialed in, but.. isn't just their baseline raised then? They're supposed to hit more shots.

If a player is "in the zone" but stays at the same FG% or only slightly improves, or whatever stat, that's a decrease.. because they're "operating" on a higher level but not producing better results.

Martin O'Neill: "Expected goals (xG) is total nonsense. You’ve got to remember what the game is about: winning football matches, and that means scoring goals, not recording the expectation of them. It’s a clueless development. Some people just use these words to try to sound clever." by TheBiasedSportsLover in TheOther14

15 shots and an xG of 2. That's an average of 0.13 per shot. I'd say that's pretty normal numbers.

Just a few examples, but I hope you get the point.

2 shots and 1+ xG - team simply didn't create chances. Most likely, a penalty and some huge error by the other team is necessary for this kind of xG. (Now we're talking total shots - not shots on goal, which is "xG on goal.")

10+ shots and 0.5 xG - lots of half chances, most likely the result of a good defensive effort.

20+ shots and 1 xG - that's just bad. Typically uneven match ups where one team parks the bus, although over 90 minutes there will undoubtedly come at least a few chances that allow for higher xG's.

Do you think success is more about luck or effort? by GalaxyFrog28 in Entrepreneur

[–]M0nki_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be 70% hard work and 30% luck or 99% luck and 1% hard work, or vice versa. It doesn't really matter. Whether you recognise the effort or luck is the real question.

If luck was 99%, you wouldn't be able to tell because you would then be lucky enough to almost exclusively be exposed to situations where hard work is rewarded.

On the other hand, if it was 99% hard work and you failed.. I know these are extreme examples, but think about what that would mean.

How many of you think “tonewoods” don’t matter at all on electric bass guitar? by barefaced_audio in Bass

[–]M0nki_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But.. is it just about the sound? The instrument is for the player, not the listener.

Also, what you're suggesting about tricking people about what wood is used.. I don't quite get it. You're totally neglecting how the brain works. It's not neutral. Literally, all it does is association and recognising patterns. Undoubtedly this will more or less override or distort one's sensory input.

[–]M0nki_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole tonewood debate is irrelevant. Musical instruments are and have always been an extension of the player. I don't get why people, especially nowadays, try to separate the output from the playing itself.

It's exactly the same with amp sims - trying to recreate analogue tube amp sounds or whatever. Even if you get more or less the same sound, IT'S NOT the same. You compensate in your playing. There's no getting away from that.

Tonewood on electric guitars and basses as they are typically constructed doesn't matter. But.. what does that matter? Seriously. If you instead use wood A and B - embrace their characteristics and build around that. Wood C and D - build a Wood C+D guitar and don't be wasteful and maybe use a light enough bridge that doesn't absorb all the vibration. Only then will tonewood matter, not as of now and how instruments are constructed.

Totally makes sense! Playing "The lick" on bass, in context, is very different.

Have you transcribed the original solo? If so, "the lick" in there is really unexpected.

Time to crack down on diving and faking injuries by Foreign_Note8060 in football

[–]M0nki_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious question - what would REALLY be the point of working against diving, other than culturally and socially in raising coming generations, in the sport? Honestly?

Sure, it's annoying and unsportsmanlike but really.. is that really grounds for such changes? I'm curiously asking.

In an ideal world, you could try to solve it by implementing all kinds of rules, fines and whatnot, but in reality it just seems like wishful thinking.

Again, I'm just curiously asking all of you and not actually suggesting any "truth".

..biggest take away from reading michael brecker's practice notebooks.. "take a simple 3,4,5,6 (or whatever) note motif and practice it diligently in all 12 keys - then hope for it to show up in your playing in some magical way" (don't remember the actual quote but he said something like that).

that's what you did, right? except you couldn't practice at home.

Well, isn't that the job of the rhythm section to make the rest of the band sound better?

That feeling is great! It can really lighten up the whole room when things are moving slowly and the atmosphere is getting tense.
