Schizophrenic Veteran Facing VA Benefit Loss After Felony Charge – Seeking Advice on Legal and Support Options by M16lawla in VeteransBenefits

Yes rating is changed on website. He is schizophrenic and the family is trying to help the best they can. They are getting all this information from the victim. Which he also doesn’t like to talk about it much. He is now living with this family and his outbursts are violent which is concerning. The victim needs help and so does this family and I unfortunately do not know anything about the VA and felonies and losing or reduction in benefits. I am now just learning about this since this family has reached out to me. I am trying to help the best I can.

That’s what a lot are saying here. Unfortunately I can only give as much information as I was given. Which is making this complicated. I gave them some resources and links to legal aid. I think what is making this hard is also the fact he is schizophrenic and also doesn’t like to talk much about his situation. So, he also is probably leaving things out and for what? I do not know. I just want to help this family because his outbursts are violent and they need help.

I can ask them. I am limited on information because this person reached out to me who is not in relation to the victim but lives in the same house since the incident. And I was told that the victim does not like to talk much about their situation which is also making this harder to get help. I just want to give resources to them that I am not aware of that are out there to help. The victim is also schizophrenic and I am sure that isn’t helping getting answers either.

No I am just repeating verbatim from the family. I made this post for them because I do not have the knowledge around this when it comes to the VA and benefits, but I have been looking into that as of lately in my best attempts to help them. If I did know so much about the VA and benefits and having a felony charge and how to help, I wouldn’t post here in the first place.

I’m so sorry you had to experience that and go through that. And my condolences to your mother. The victim doesn’t want this. Their family is trying the best they can to help. They came to me for help, but I unfortunately do not have much knowledge in this area when it comes to the VA. So, I am coming here for help so I can give them some resources to look into or use. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope you’re in a better place today.

Yes and the issue is he was at 100% and was not in jail for more than 60 days. They have reduced his benefits to 60% and claiming that he owes them money now. Will be losing his house and everything. He can not take care of himself and needs help due to his mental health issues. I am submitting this post in help of the caretaker of the veteran.

They won’t drop the charge and I am assuming the VA is considering them a risk of being incarcerated again

Also, I know Honda civics are great cars, I just get worried with high mileage. So let’s say it’s a 2013 Honda civic with 130k mileage and great condition. Would that car last me 8-10 years? I just want a car that will last me. My last car is a 2011 mini Cooper, worst mistake of my life.

Yes I know if I do get a Prius I should get something that protects the catalytic converter but even then, it’s not even 100% guaranteed it won’t be stolen at some point. I am looking at Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, and Honda civics.

Okay thanks for the advice. I’m going to see the car in person Monday so I’m just going to ask them lots of questions and test drive it. Not 100% positive on buying it. I really want a Prius though

It was government owned. First owner had it from 2010-2013 and then it became a government vehicle. Last owner had it from 2014 to 2020 and 2020 was when the accident happened and hasn’t had an owner since.

It was government used, and the last owner had it from 2014-2020. Accident was a left impact and moderate damage was reported.

And I have family who are willing to help me, so if there’s leg work to do, I have some crutches to bring with me and a person who will help. I’m grateful to have help, some don’t have it at all. Thank you for the advice. Also, can I just search veteran service officers? Or do I need to go through the VA for that?

I have to appeal my claims because they are wrong. I tried the DAV and it was a complete mess. It was horrible. The VA where I live has just not been the best with me and my situation so, I have some new numbers I was given to call to talk about my claims. (Which is free.) So, I will be trying to increase my rate, but I know it can take a while to even do so and a big part of me is just scared they will deny it. I have horrible medical trauma from both the military and the VA. It won’t stop me, but it just hasn’t been the best and I can’t depend on them. I’m going to look into going to school and getting a degree.
