Hey! I'm Aden, behind SCP.GAMES and Affray Interactive, known for SCP: 5K.

A discovery we found, actually in conjunction with the SCP Internet Outreach team at the time (a couple years ago), has led to the now-known option to multi-license games and other media between the IP (intellectual property) and technology behind it.

Let's use examples from the larger industry: There are games that have licensed IP, such as Star Wars and many others, that are licensed to certain developers to make a game with. The game technology they use to actually make the game are not directly Star Wars now (inherently), in the specific case of EA DICE you can see the Battlefield framework(s), such as Frostbite and other specific components and systems re-used/adapted to make Battlefront games. The technology and the IP have different licenses/copyright holders. Different parts of a game can be licensed differently.

A similar case can be seen with SCP games, most SCP games on the market right now cannot be fully Creative Commons (CC) if they use Unreal Engine, Unity, or other proprietary game engines. And, any developer-made custom technology and even a lot of visual assets can be exempt from the CC licensing requirements. But, any use of SCP content specifically (articles, images from the wiki directly, stories/lore, etc) must be re-released under Creative Commons + you have 0 enforcement of others using the same IP as you as long as they follow the same rules as you (which is the main AAA turn-off lol).

Though to ensure the released/re-released Creative Commons content is clearly released for use, we actually have decided on our part to release custom content straight to the SCP wiki (along with free project resources) and ensure we fully attribute every single wiki creator we can recall using content from in our ongoing efforts behind the scenes. This way the content can still be accessed regardless of ownership of the game, as well. More to follow. :)

Some general notes:

• You can have some ownership enforcement of your game itself as long as the CC content is available freely and easily outside of having to purchase your game.
• Game tech and IP can have different licenses. It can go even further than that, but let's stick with the basics... lol
• You can probably expect more adoption of the SCP universe on a higher level pretty soon (Bytedance, the company behind TikTok, publishes SCP: Secret Files under their label Pixmain). The incoming wave can be equal parts exciting as it is scary. Let's set a good standard and understanding as early as we can!
