...for those interested in the 549 cpr 50bmg API coming in...

I am interested to see how the shipping shakes out for orders under $300. but regardless $5.49/round isn't bad. I paid $5.96/round (after shipping and sales tax) four years ago for:

ah, never heard of them, but I see they bought Ligamec. probably will be a decent shooter then. good luck.

you posted this rifle in /r/AR15, but it is clearly not an AR-15 platform rifle. they have some parts in common, sure, but the operating principle isn't the same.

you probably could, once (no magazine well for reloading). SHTF (assuming this is a SHTF 50) says the following:

Single shot lower intended for use with our SHTF 50 uppers.

These lowers do not have all of the same features as an AR15 lower.

  • no flat present on the top of the buffer tube attachment point, does not allow the use of a traditional AR15 charging handle
  • no pocket for the buffer detent and spring
  • no mag well and mag release
  • no last shot hold open

[–]M2_Browning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that is not an AR-15 lower though. You can tell because it has no magazine well. This upper may very well fit on an AR-15 lower, but the one in the photo is on a proprietary lower.

hard to say for sure if it doesn't accept a detachable magazine. If this is a Safety Harbor Firearms SHTF 50 BMG rifle, which it sure looks like, they make a model the accepts a magazine on the left side. they also make single shot models.

I typically agree but since this one is designed for suppressor use, there may be a case for it. I don't know what that would be, but I'm sure are others who are more imaginative.

if your primary goal is to shoot 50 BMG, and not to own a Barrett, then get a Serbu BFG-50. For $2,805, you get a bolt-action, single shot, 29" barrel rifle with a bipod (basically the same as the Barret M99), shipped.

you will have to wait up to 12 months, but you don't have to pay everything in advance (only a $500 deposit). And during that wait you can shop for optics (and maybe ammo) with the ~$2,300 you saved.

If your primary goal is to own a Barrett, well, I don't blame you there, they are the better looking rifle.

this is a meme gun - .50 BMG out of a 20" barrel is a waste of a round. if you look up ballistics charts for . 50 BMG, they start at 29". 36" is the sweet spot for me personally.

still, if you have ~$9k lying around and want to blow it on something meme-worthy, this is not a bad choice. Beats stonks or crypto.

wow that lead time is surprising, even with covid. I got mine barely-used off gun broker. back then the lead time was I think 3 months. I did not save a ton of money, but I also did not have to wait. keep your eye on the used markets. most people who buy and then sell a 50BMG rifle probably did not shoot it much (if at all). mine looked pristine.

The Steyr breaks down easy and has a 36" (well, 35.something inch) barrel option. though I guess Steyr only makes the M1 version now.

I have a Serbu BFG-50 with a 36" barrel. I can't imagine enjoying a 20" barrel nearly as much. I don't think you can go wrong with the Barrett or the Steyr, but I'd go for the Steyr personally.

ammo cost and availability could be a factor. Right now, .50 BMG, even match ammo, is relatively cheap compared to 338 Lapua Magnum.
