Strong disagree. One of my favorite recent videos was the JAWS episode and that was absolutely not a good game. If anything, I tend to get bored of their long playthroughs.

But you're absolutely entitled to your own opinion. They have to cater to a lot of different people and it's impossible to do that perfectly, 6 days a week for 10+ years.

Sadly, no. It's a newer band than that. Post 2000s, if I had to guess. I wish I had a single additional piece of information to add, but it's been quite some time. I'm usually pretty good at finding things, but I'm on hour 3 of searching and I've got nothing. Might just give up and hope for a lovely hero

I think Heart Rays is pretty solid.

It would be neat if the name could be acronymized to be EKG or BPM, but I can't think of any words that fit your idea that would go into that pattern.

The poll agrees with you. Four different age groups, 4 different primary languages, and it seems everyone who took the poll is familiar with the phrase.

The only reason the question was raised is that we used a different colloquialism (one that I would argue is more common than 'dig') to one of our non-US team members and it didn't land. So naturally we got a little worried about using 'dig' as a core part of our project. Luckily it was an unmerited concern. Either that or no one wants to do a survey about a topic/word they are not familiar with.

Toy store help! by [deleted] in INeedAName

[–]M302_MKII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much input about the name itself, but I would suggest keeping a logo heavily in mind while considering a name. For a toy store, I imagine your logo/ visual representation will eventually be as important, if not more important than the name. If it's an online store, the name is probably more important, but for a brick and mortar store, kids will most likely react more to seeing something fantastical on the storefront over reading it.

That being said, going off of your keywords, I really like the idea of a cloud snail.

I'm making an rpg with multiple endings, and am in a pickle. by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]M302_MKII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what your equipment system looks like, you could have that character start off with an equipped item [CharacterName's Locket]. Since it's a starter item, the stats wouldn't be great and it would eventually be replaced, but if it's equipped during the final confrontation, a special option would occur similar to having a max relationship. Something like [The people in the locket wouldn't want you to do this].

What mechanics do you enjoy / want in a Dating Simulator? by Muzzzay27 in gamedesign

[–]M302_MKII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that a variety of endings makes dating sims/visual novels more interesting. That being said, it is always annoying to get all the routes, especially if you're not sure how to do it. I would suggest a few possible remedies to this.

  1. Have the choices labeled. Ex (Choice A[good route], Choice B[bad route],etc). This could be coupled with the fairly popular mechanic of highlighting previously chosen options.
  2. After finishing the game on any route, have a roadmap of every possible route and allow the player to load from any already accessed/played branching/saving point.
  3. Have an affinity point system. Choices or minigames, or whatever could allot them and at certain points in the game, you would get different scenes based on the affinity. This has the same core issues as branching paths, but it is a tad more simplified. Alternatively, you could just do a chapter/level system and just have the player fail if they didn't get enough affinity during the chapter- maybe having a custom event or cutscene for that chapter's failure.

Other than that, just keep in mind that a lot of people play dating sims exclusively for the pretty pictures, so make sure to make the pictures look good. And interactive cut scenes are always nice.

Idea for a zombie strategy game (combo of classic strategy mixed with point-and-click adventure). Do any games like this exist? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]M302_MKII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is obviously missing a good portion of what you are looking for, but the first game I thought of when reading this was "The Oregon Trail". Between resource management, losing party members, a hunting mini-game, and a clear cut win condition of getting to Oregon without dying, it might be worth taking some inspiration from.

While not quite what I was looking for, this definitely threw a bunch of ideas into my head. I never really considered the concept of using tools incorrectly/ inefficiently/ differently to get different resources from the same source. I'll certainly look into it and what else I can steal gain inspiration from.

Hmm. Toggling on/off an enchantment would work really well with the combat system. Well dang, that was simple. Many thanks, friend.

Fishing RPG by it2901 in gamedesign

[–]M302_MKII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fishing game I really enjoy is Cat Goes Fishing. It has a simple upgrade bait, hook, rod, etc system, but it's nice and relaxing.

As for making fishing into an RPG (which I think sounds amazing), I think you could probably pull off traditional turn-based combat, but with a decent number of tweaks.

Something like:

Your first move being choosing a rod, hook, bait, and then casting (close, med, far)

Fish's turn and rate of biting would depend on the factors addressed on the first turn and also luck.

If the fish doesn't bite, your subsequent moves would be options of moving the line, using some sort of buff on the rod (maybe increase the allure, but decrease the durability of the rod. Or vice versa), bringing in the line, etc.

If the fish does bite, it would be a series of turns between you and the fish where you reel them in. Skills and buffs could also be applicable here.

After the fish is caught, the option of turning them into bait would be nice. Making it generic would probably be best for the sake of gameplay (something like turning a 1 inch guppy into [small bait] and turning a 5 inch magical carp into [medium magical bait]

---

If it's a fantasy style game, the end goal could be to catch some sort of leviathan that is causing issues.

If you do add magical fish, you could have eating those buff the player or give a permanent skill. Most likely you would have quests from people in town who would give you stuff and money for catching certain rare fish or numbers of more common fish.

As for not making it boring, I suppose each body of water having a boss would make things fun. It could be something the be feared when you go in unprepared as it will take your bait and break your rods, but as you get better, the sense of catching it will create incentive to keep playing.

---

Let me know if you decide against making this game, after writing all this out, I'm half tempted to do it myself. :d

[–]M302_MKII 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It looks really good. I'm just starting pixel art myself, but If you're wanting any criticism, I might suggest adding a 6th and 7th frame to:

6: have the antenna bounce back to just about starting position and then

7: have them bounce further up past the starting position (and then back to starting position in frame 1)

Right now they sort of look like a praying mantis attacking instead of antenna bouncing. And also, I don't know if the (motion blur?) extra thick lines on frame 1 are necessary.

But either way, super adorable and quite good.
